President Donald Trump wants to reverse a trend of fewer children participating in sports and make youth sports more accessible to economically disadvantaged students. The White House is promoting the goals of the President's Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition on Wednesday and will hold a field day with the president on the South Lawn. Trump is expected to join athletes at stations that will include flag football, baseball, volleyball, golf, soccer and track and field. Trump issued an executive order in February refocusing the council on youth sports as opposed to President Barack Obama's emphasis on fitness and healthy...

SAGINAW TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A Michigan gym patron looking for a WiFi connection found one named “remote detonator,” prompting an evacuation and precautionary search of the facility by a bomb-sniffing dog. The Saginaw News reports nothing was found in the search Sunday at Planet Fitness in Saginaw Township, about 85 miles (140 kilometres) northwest of Detroit.

“The program, in sum, not only builds physical fitness, but good Americans.” That’s how Look magazine summarized the physical education program of La Sierra High School in January 1962 [PDF]. If you’re wondering how a gym class got a major spread in a national publication—as well as an endorsement from President John F. Kennedy—take a look at this.

This week President Donald Trump underwent a full physical exam carried out by Dr. Ronny Jackson. Unusually, the exam included a test of cognitive abilities. The Doctor, who pronounced his patient to be in good health, was then subjected to a barrage of questions, 80 in all, from the media. A few are shown below. NBC News reporter Hallie Jackson wondered “isn’t Mr. Trump is too fat to be president? I mean, he’s no Obama. He doesn’t shoot hoops. He looks fat to me. Doesn’t he look fat to you?” “The tests we conducted were aimed to objectively measure important...

Life Time has scrubbed all-news cable channels from the screens at its fitness centers, saying a growing number of customers think they don’t fit a healthy lifestyle. The Chanhassen-based company this week dropped CNN, Fox News, MSNBC and CNBC from TVs in front of various workout machines. While the screens were in view of all in fitness areas, audio could only be heard through earphones. With a few exceptions, TV screens built into treadmills and other cardio machines also “currently do not have the ability to display these channels,” Life Time spokeswoman Natalie Bushaw said Thursday. However, a second phase...

Fitness rule changes are one way the Navy plans to keep sailors in uniform. (MCS Christopher Pratt/Navy) The U.S. Navy will grant “fitness pardons” to nearly 50,000 sailors who have fitness failures on their records, in order to help maintain the level of sailors needed for readiness, the Navy Times reported this week. “Retention of every capable Sailor is critical to the operational readiness of the Navy,” said Vice Adm. Robert Burke, Chief of Naval Personnel, the Navy Times reported. “The goal of the Navy’s physical readiness program is to maintain a minimum prescribed level of fitness necessary for world-wide...

Evening Standard ^ | Tom Powell
A rising number of young Chinese people are failing fitness tests required to join the army because they are too fat and masturbate too much, state media has proclaimed. The high rejection rate has triggered concerns that there are not enough youths in good physical condition to fill the ranks of the Chinese army. A poor diet and frequent masturbation, leading to abnormally large testicular veins, are believed to be behind falling fitness levels, according to a report published in state-run military newspaper the People’s Liberation Army Daily.

The former first lady says she's been hosting "bootcamps" for her friends to help whip them into shape and "be healthy together." [Snip] "When I was at the White House, I often hosted bootcamp weekends for my close girlfriends," Obama, 53, wrote. "It didn't matter that we were all at varying fitness levels. Our bootcamp weekends were a reminder that if we want to keep taking care of others, we need to take care of ourselves first."

Older adults who experience good cardiac fitness may be also keeping their brains in good shape as well. In what is believed to be the first study of its kind, older adults who scored high on cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) tests performed better on memory tasks than those who had low CRF. Further, the more fit older adults were, the more active their brain was during learning. These findings appear in the journal Cortex. Difficulty remembering new information represents one of the most common complaints in aging and decreased memory performance is one of the hallmark impairments in Alzheimer's disease. Healthy...

Video Link -- I row daily or bike and am slower than a funeral march, but am trying to get faster. This is the best video I have found on indoor rowing of the 2K for time. Lots of science, psychology, and strategy...which is fun for nerds like me and, maybe, some of you too.My records for the 2K is just under an 8 minute pace--once (nearly killed me). But it (rowing) is a great means of fitness for older guys and gals because of its low impact.

A Michigan company running health clubs ejected a woman and canceled her membership after she warned other women that she had found a man using the women’s locker room – with the company’s permission. And then a Michigan judge tossed her lawsuit over the ejection, telling her she had no grounds for complaint. The result will be an appeal of the case to the higher courts, according to a law firm working on the dispute. A statement from lawyers at Kallman Legal Group explained, "It is clear that the appellate courts in Michigan will have the final say in this...

National Review obtained the following long-form version of a letter from Mr. Trump's physician detailing his health history. To Whom It Will Concern: I have been the personal physician of Mr. Donald J. Trump since 1968. His previous physician was my father, Dr. Edith Bernofsky. I am pleased to report that, at no point since he was unable to fight in Vietnam, has Mr. Trump had any significant medical problems. During a recent comprehensive medical examination, Mr. Trump revealed himself to be quite extraordinarily healthy. While I conducted my array of tests, he singlehandedly held me above his magnificent head...

Yielding to a protest by 12 obese female officers, the Colorado Springs Police Department has agreed to discontinue the required annual fitness tests it had been mandating for all personnel. Chief of Police Peter Carey defended the move as "prudent. Granted, an over-weight, out-of-shape officer might have a hard time chasing down and subduing a suspect, but realistically, that activity consumes a relatively minor share of each officer's duties. A law enforcement officer typically spends far more time filling out paperwork, than he or she does apprehending criminals." "If we tried to fight this thing we'd be tied up in court...
