Jeffrie Eugene Long Jr., member of the Maryland House of Delegates (D-Calvert and Prince George's counties) paid an uninvited visit to a constituent's home. He let himself in via an unlocked door and brought along a metal pipe to use during his conversation with the home owner. His message was a succinct "keep my name off your mouth or I'm going to put you six feet under." After a tense pause, Long left the home and drove away in his Mercedes-Benz. The home owners called the police to complain about Long's bizarre behavior and expressed their fear that he meant...

CNBC tested it and verified that it's a real bug. I tried placing a video call to my editor from my iPhone using Apple's FaceTime app. Then, before he picked up, I used the menu option to add somebody else to the call and, as 9to5Mac's directions state, I added myself to the call. Suddenly, I could hear my editor, even though he never picked up. We continued having a conversation while his phone only gave him the option to answer. There was no indication that the call had already gone through. The Verge reports that, if the person you're...

A bug in FaceTime lets you listen in to the audio if you try to call someone -- even if they don't pick up. You first video call someone then try to add yourself to the group call. The FaceTime bug seems to be a huge privacy problem.

Facebook employees have been caught leaving glowing reviews on Amazon for Facebook's new video-chat device. Facebook released the Portal, a video-chat and smart-speaker device, in October. It's the first hardware product built and sold under the Facebook brand. The new gadget has already faced some hardship, as Facebook acknowledged that it could collect data about its owners to help the company target ads at people.

Those who want a better future for themselves and their families will heed his message. Those who choose not to, he doesn’t need. Polls can be useless Donald Trump’s recent speech regarding the atrocious state of urban, majority-black communities was a stellar achievement. As with much of the good he proposes for the nation, someone, somewhere will always impugn his efforts and this occasion was no different. Whatever can be done to hack away at his steely resolve will be done by those who are headed for irrelevance if this man becomes the next President of the United States. The...

A group of Johns Hopkins University researchers found a bug in Apple’s encryptionthat would let a skilled attacker decrypt photos and videos that were sent as secure instant messages. (Matthias Schrader/AP) Apple’s growing arsenal of encryption techniques — shielding data on devices as well as real-time video calls and instant messages — has spurred the U.S. government to sound the alarm that such tools are putting the communications of terrorists and criminals out of the reach of law enforcement. But a group of Johns Hopkins University researchers has found a bug in the company’s vaunted encryption, one that would enable...

Humorist Dave Barry hammered the media on Wednesday's New Day for their "daily obsession with Donald Trump: "We keep asking why he's doing so well — and he's on TV all the time. He's on more than the GEICO gecko." When CNN's Alisyn Camerota defended the press coverage of Trump by using his front-runner status, Barry countered that "you can't deny the incredible impact...at this point, Kim Kardashian also could run for president and would do okay if we gave her the same level of coverage that we give to Donald Trump." [video below] Camerota first prompted the Miami Herald...

The names of the tech workers in this story have been changed.Ten thousand miles from Silicon Valley, in a room near the Black Sea, Yegor Karpenchekov dreams of money. At night, while the rest of Odessa sleeps and cocaine smugglers drift in and out of the port under cover of darkness, Yegor logs onto FaceTime and talks to a 70-year-old woman in San Francisco. Her name is Sally Faubion, and five months ago she recruited Yegor from the freelancer marketplace UpWork to code her apps. She believes "divine intervention" brought them together; for Yegor, it was likely $20 per hour...

In tandem with the launch of new MacBook Pros, Apple has brought FaceTime for Mac out of beta. The video calling utility is mainly available through the Mac App Store, where it costs 99 cents. It does however come free on new MacBook Pros. Users make calls via Address Book contacts, or alternately by turning to Favorites or Recents lists. Incoming calls will ring without launching the app first; alerts also appear on multiple Macs simultaneously in cases where the same Apple ID is being used. Video can be watched fullscreen, or in a normal windowed view. The primary improvement...

You’ve heard about the yellow screen splotches and the wonky antenna that requires you to hold the new iPhone just right. But now a new issue is coming to light: a faulty camera system that not only affects your ability to take pictures, it can foil your attempts to use FaceTime, the video chat feature that is the iPhone 4’s top talking point.

Regular readers will know that recently I’ve liked to state my bias in the title of my mobile device reviews: I love the iPhone. Some will call that being a fanboy, and that’s fine. But really, it’s just my opinion that the iPhone is hands down the best mobile device out there. If there were a better one, I would use it. But there’s not. So I use the iPhone. And that’s the angle I take towards these mobile device reviews. It’s simple: if you want to be the best, you have to beat the best. Well, one finally has:...

LONDON (Reuters) - The United States has entered a recession, according to highly-regarded investor Jim Rogers, who told Britain's Daily Telegraph newspaper on Wednesday he was switching out of the dollar and into yen, the yuan and the Swiss franc. The veteran investor, who predicted the 1999 commodities rally, also said he was still bullish about surging Chinese stock markets despite worries over a bubble. Fears are growing over the health of the U.S. economy after the fallout from the subprime mortgage market crisis and the global credit crunch it triggered. The U.S. Federal Reserve has already slashed borrowing costs...

...The Schiavo case puts the chief justice to an exquisite test. If there is one principle Rehnquist has spoken for forcefully in his years on the court, it is federalism. And, in particular, it is the right of the 50 sovereign states to be free of interference by the U.S. Congress. For four decades in the middle of the last century, the Supreme Court didn't reject a single act of Congress on the grounds that the national legislature lacked the power in our federal system. Rehnquist, as justice and then as chief, led the charge to revive the notion of...
