As Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton fights through several mini-scandals, her approval rating has been skidding, sending her "favorability" rating to a seven-year low. In a new report, Pew Research Center said that her rating crossed the 50 percent mark this month and now sits at 49 percent. It was lower, at 48 percent, way back in May 2008 when she was being pushed out of the presidential race by then Sen. Barack Obama. Liberal economist Paul Krugman appears to have cherry-picked data to support his belief in the Federal Reserve’s ability to stabilize the economy. In a recent column responding to another economist, Krugman included a chart purporting to show that central bank interest rates have a significant effect on long-term investments. Yet in a post for the Pragmatic Capitalism blog, entrepreneur and financial expert Cullen Roche asserts that Krugman “decided to remove 20 years worth of data because it fit his argument better.” And it appears to check out.

Ana Marie Cox remains a committed liberal, her Christian coming out, as she described it, notwithstanding. Even so, she had a raw truth-telling moment this morning that will not please Hillary fans. On Steve Kornacki's MSNBC show, Cox declared that close Hillary associate and informal foreign policy adviser Sidney Blumenthal is "kind of a scumbag." All Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell wanted was a quick extension of the Patriot Act and then a vacation. Early Saturday morning, his plans for a two-month extension quickly dwindled to a week-long extension, then a four-day extension, then a two-day extension, then a one-day extension. A new Pew Research Center poll shows that America is unhappy with the GOP led Congress. In fact, Americans are disgusted as Republican congressional leaders only registered a 22% overall approval rating. What is especially significant is that the poll shows this anger is bi-partisan. Only 41% of Republicans approve of the performance of the GOP congressional leadership. This is much lower than the 60% approval rating GOP leaders received in 2011 and the 78% approval rating they received from Republicans in 1995, months after the party took control of Congress for the first time in 40 years. The health of a democratic polity depends in no small part on the generousness of its civic discourse — that is, opposing sides ought to give one another the benefit of the doubt. If same-sex marriage proponents allowed that same-sex marriage opponents might, just might, be motivated by something other than animal hatred, we might be able to reach solutions that balance the competing interests unavoidably present in any political body. Team McCain advertised his 91 percent rating in 2014 from conservative group ACU as the Washington insider heads into a tough 2016 campaign season.
