A Detroit-area woman charged in a body parts probe pleaded guilty Monday to fraud, admitting she falsely told a customer that human remains for medical training were free of infectious diseases. The government says Arthur Rathburn and his wife Elizabeth Rathburn of Grosse Pointe Park operated International Biological Inc., which rented out body parts for medical or dental training. Elizabeth Rathburn struck a deal with prosecutors and pleaded guilty to wire fraud, about two months after the two were indicted. She didn’t disclose in an email that remains provided for a 2012 meeting of the American Society of Anesthesiologists in...

Donald Trump brought a surprise to Thursday night's debate—an endorsement from former presidential rival Ben Carson. The New York billionaire was asked by moderator Jake Tapper what his specific issues were with Common Core when he pivoted to his endorsement. “I was with Dr. Carson today, who’s endorsing me by the way tomorrow morning, and we spoke for over an hour on education,” Trump said. “He wants a lot of different things that are terrific.” “I’m gonna have Ben very much involved with education,” Trump said.

February 24, 2012 By MICHAEL FALCONE ABC News' David Muir, Michael Falcone and Emily Friedman report: DETROIT - Standing on the 30-yard line of Detroit's Ford Field, Mitt Romney delivered what was billed as a major economic speech before a crowd of about 1,200 supporters on Friday. In his crucial home state of Michigan, Romney reiterated his new tax plan to applause from an audience dwarfed by the scope of the stadium that seats up to 80,000 spectators. The Romney campaign promised an economic policy speech on filled with major new policy initiatives, but...

Ben Carson, who just days ago dropped his lackluster Republican Party presidential bid amid languishing poll numbers and a disappearing profile, is leading in Florida polling by a wide margin, but in the contest for the Sunshine State's soon-to-be-open Senate seat. Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson speaks during CPAC 2016 March 4, 2016 in National Harbor, Maryland. A new poll shows 56 percent of likely voters would choose Carson if he were to enter the state GOP primary for the job Sen. Marco Rubio plans to vacate. If Carson doesn't run in what's likely to be a crowded field, according...

The Michigan Legislature will soon begin debating in full the future of Detroit schools. The governor and the Coalition for the Future of Detroit Schoolchildren have introduced new strategies to address the vicious cycle of poor academics and spiraling debt. Unfortunately, both plans carry significant tabs and cling to the notion that a unified school district central office needs to govern all schools. In Detroit, large governing entities have little to show in terms of results, with histories of pay to play and excessive compensation for top executives. A conservative governor and a conservative-majority Legislature should actually consider taking a...

Finding solutions to help Detroit students not only requires recognizing the problem. It also requires a clear picture of the facts and understanding how the current system works. In a recent MLive column, Ann Arbor attorney Eli Savit offers a well-intentioned but misdiagnosed policy proposal to address the genuinely disturbing images of mold and vermin found in some Detroit Public Schools buildings. He calls on Lansing leaders to fix the state’s “regressive school-finance system and earmark state funds for school building projects in poorer districts.” One can make a case that funds designated for building construction and major maintenance projects...

Based on the latest polling data, GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump appears certain to win the upcoming March 8 Michigan primary and is likely to also take the corresponding race today in Kansas. A FOX 2 Detroit/Mitchell poll released on Friday shows Trump increasing his already massive lead in the Michigan primary. In the survey of likely GOP voters, Trump was picked by 42%, putting him 23% ahead of – and more than double – his nearest competitor, Ted Cruz, who sits at just 19%. Marco Rubio placed third at 15%, in a statistical tie with John Kasich....

According to the poll, Trump, who scored key wins in seven of the 11 states making their GOP picks Tuesday and holds a sizable lead in delegates needed to secure the GOP nomination, remains the presumptive favorite. Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson tops the list of potential running-mates for Donald Trump if the businessman wins the GOP nomination, according to a new poll. Carson is the choice of 11 percent of Republican and GOP-leaning independent voters, a Morning Consult poll released Monday found. Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz, the candidates right behind Trump in the GOP race, are tied for second with 9 percent each. John Kasich, also a Republican presidential candidate, follows with 8 percent, tied with New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who endorsed Trump last week after dropping out of the GOP race in February....

It seems like the only thing that’s guaranteed in this year’s election is the litany of punditry after every primary. This undiscussed industry has helped make politics more blood sport than democratic exercise. It seems to get nastier at every turn, as campaign flacks dressed up as journalists line up to savage candidates whose campaigns they see as a threat to their preferred politician. Some have even gone so far as to question my faith, integrity or party loyalty because I won’t kowtow to their demands to step away from the primary process. Is this what has become of politics...

Retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson told supporters Saturday in Irving that he has heard plenty of calls to drop out of the Republican presidential primary. Some "special interests" have even made personal appeals to him, he said. "I've got unanswered calls on my phone right now, 'Oh, if you did this or did this, and did this, or if you drop out and support this guy, we'll give you all this money and we'll make sure you're a senator here,'" Carson said.
