A prominent veterinarian and farmer, who is also a member of the North Carolina State University's Board of Trustees, was arrested in the District of Columbia after police discovered a holstered, loaded handgun in his briefcase.   He apparently was scheduled to attend a meeting in the Cannon House Office Building.  Capitol police discoverd the firearm in an ankle holster inside of his brief case.   I suspect it was the Ruger LCP, a popular, small, pistol. A friend believes that the small gun was inadvertently left in the luggage.  From the comments at thestate.com: I know Ron personally and he...

Emily Miller is the famous investigative reporter who wrote the series  "Emily Gets Her Gun" about applying for a permit to legally own a firearm in the District of Columbia.  The series led to her successful book of the same title.   An autographed copy sits near my elbow.   I met Emily a couple of years ago at a Gun Rights Policy Conference.   She is a sharp woman, intimately familiar with the insanity of D.C. gun laws, who owns a legally registered handgun in the District of Columbia. She recently tweeted: Stay tuned- I'm writing a story with the details...

Dick Heller (yes the famous Heller of the Supreme Court case) is celebrating the resounding victory in the Palmer v. D.C. carry outside the home case that was released yesterday.    From Dick: Within minutes of getting home and sitting down at my kitchen table, I received a phone call. It was George Lyon, a plaintiff in the case as well as an attorney. He shared the good news that Judge Scullin, who was appointed by Justice Roberts, had issued a decision striking down the ridiculous and useless restrictions on self-defense with a firearm outside my home. With George on the...

Alan Gura reports that the District Court, after nearly five years of stonewalling, has found for the Constitutional right to bear arms outside of the home.  It has struck down the prohibitions on carry outside of the home in the District of Columbia, for both residents and non-residents.   It took five years and two petitions for a writ of mandamus to obtain this decision.  The wording below is from the decision.   From alangura.com: In light of Heller, McDonald, and their progeny, there is no longer any basis on which this Court can conclude that the District of Columbia’s...

President Barack Obama said on Monday that he’s in favor of Washington, D.C., gaining statehood. “I’m in D.C., so I’m for it,” he said to a room of mostly young, minority boys who were at the White House for Obama’s My Brother’s Keeper initiative. “Folks in D.C. pay taxes like everybody else. They contribute to the overall well-being of the country like everybody else. They should be represented like everybody else.” Obama said he’s supported the idea of statehood for D.C. “for quite sometime” but acknowledged that “the politics of it” would make it something difficult to move through Congress....

A flash mob broke out in the Petworth neighborhood of Washington, D.C. Friday night, prompting police to fire a riot control agent into a crowd near a subway station. The episode underscores boiling tensions in a neighborhood that — like many inner-city communities across the country — is trying to launch a major “revitalization” project that will see the opening of upwardly-priced new apartment units this summer to accompany a major new chain store.Reports on social media suggest that D.C. Metropolitan Police broke up a party in Petworth due to fighting, prompting a crowd of teenage partiers — at least one...

With Congressional approval ratings barely avoiding single digits, most Americans might want to pretend that Washington, D.C. doesn’t exist. But as reporter Justin Gray, who was flying to Washington found out, there is one TSA agent at Orlando International Airport who truly does not believe that D.C. is a real place. The report from WFTV begins: “It’s something most of us learned in elementary school – the USA has 50 states and the District of Columbia.” Not so for the TSA agent in question. Gray relays a recent confusing exchange at the airport: “I gave the TSA agent my D.C....

ORLANDO, Fla. — It's something most of most students learn in elementary school -- the United States is made up of 50 states and the District of Columbia. But Channel 9's Justin Gray found out it's a lesson that an Orlando agent with the Transportation Safety Administration seems to have missed. Gray, who lives in Washington, D.C., was flying out of Orlando International Airport when a TSA agent said Gray's District of Columbia driver's license wasn't a valid form of identification. Gray said his license is legal and up-to-date, but the TSA agent didn't seem to know what the District...

A federal judge Friday gave the IRS one week to hand over details on Lois Lerner’s crashed hard drive and how to track it, the second federal judge in as many days to seek more information about the elusive emails. Judge Reggie Walton of the U.S. District Court of the District of Columbia ordered the the tax agency to find out by July 18 what happened to the crashed hard drive responsible for erasing two years worth of the former IRS official’s emails, including whether it’s traceable through a serial number. If such information is gone, the judge wants an...

On May 6th, about six months after Alan Gura filed a petition for a writ of mandamus in the long delayed Palmer v. District of Columbia case, he filed for a renewal of the writ. The Palmer case is a basic right to carry case against the District of Columbia, which is the only jurisdiction in the United States that categorically denies any legal ability to carry a firearm outside of the home for legal self defense.  The case was originally filed on August 6th, 2009, so the case has been pending for nearly five years; an incredible delay...

(Newser) – A Maryland congressman who meant to take a stand against looser marijuana laws in Washington, DC, might end up making them even looser thanks to the legal fine print in his amendment. The Washington Post lays out the somewhat convoluted scenario surrounding Republican Andy Harris' legislation: To begin with, recall that DC's city council voted earlier this year to make possession of small amounts of pot punishable by only a $25 fine. Harris, who thinks that measure is a bad idea and wants to block it from taking effect, tacked an amendment onto a House spending bill that...

WASHINGTON (CBSDC) – The anti-amnesty group, Americans for Legal Immigration PAC (ALIPAC), is calling on Americans to mail their “gently used underwear” to President Barack Obama and House Speaker John Boehner in response to a government request for new briefs for the recent surge of illegal immigrants being held by border patrol. ALIPAC is responding to a Department of Homeland Security solicitation seeking thousands of pairs of “White 100% Cotton Men’s Briefs” – ranging from medium sizes to hundreds of 6X-large pairs – to meet the basic clothing needs of thousands of immigrants detained by Immigration & Customs Enforcement. “Obama...

Thad Cochran — and then he didn't concede. "We had a dream and the dream is still with us," said McDaniel to an increasingly vocal crowd, telling them that the fight is not over. The District of Columbia Council on Tuesday approved a "yoga tax" on gymnasiums and yoga classes that has angered fitness buffs in the U.S. capital. The Democratic-controlled council voted 12-1 to give final approval to a $10.6 billion budget for 2015 that included a sales tax on gyms, yoga studios and other athletic businesses, a spokeswoman for Council Chairman Phil Mendelson said. The budget also includes a substantial income tax cut that would be offset by expanding the existing 5.75 percent sales tax to such services as tanning salons, health clubs, car washes and bowling alleys. The move is expected...
  • In ‘Mayor for Life,’ D.C.’s Marion Barry takes pride in himself but little blame for problems

Curiously, the dramatic climax of Marion Barry’s autobiography is exactly the kind of salacious moment that he has long dismissed as irrelevant and sensational, a notorious incident that steers attention far away from his life’s work: It was sometime in the 1980s, and the mayor was at a party at a house he frequented on 11th Street NW. A woman who was doing coke offered him some, noting that the stuff made her “hot.” This was enough for Barry: “I told myself, what the hell? Why not?” She put a line of cocaine on a business card, and the mayor...

Bus ads linking Islam with Nazism are circulating through Washington, DC - sparking a furious debate about the role of free speech. "Islamic Jew-hatred: It's in the Quran. Two-thirds of all US aid goes to Islamic countries. Stop racism. End all aid to Islamic countries," the ad states, over a fine-print disclaimer from the Metro transit authority. The ads, which are featured on twenty Metro buses, feature a photo of Adolf Hitler in conversation with "his staunch ally" Haj Amin al-Husseini, the grand mufti of Jerusalem during World War II. Al-Husseini has become an important figurehead for anti-Semitism in the...

A federal judge on Thursday upheld the District’s tough gun registration laws, finding that new regulations crafted by city officials in response to a Supreme Court decision “pass constitutional scrutiny.” “The people of this city, acting through their elected representatives, have sought to combat gun violence and promote public safety. The court finds that they have done so in a constitutionally permissible manner,” U.S. District Judge James Boasberg wrote in an opinion likely to be appealed by gun-rights advocates.
