  • Dave Brat Fights Back

Did you hear Eric Cantor's deceptive ad, calling Dave Brat a liberal? I sure did. Wasn't Eric Cantor one of only 28 Republicans who voted with the Democrats for a debt ceiling hike in January? You know what else? He voted to fully fund Obamacare in October and he's tried to hide amnesty in the Defense Authorization bill. How sneaky is that? And he has the nerve to call Dave Brat a liberal? Seems to me he oughta be looking at his own voting record. I am the Republican Conservative, free-market economist Dave Brat. I approve this message.

Just a few miles from his family home, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) felt the wrath of the tea party Saturday, when activists in his congressional district booed and heckled the second-most powerful House Republican. They also elected one of their own to lead Virginia’s 7th Congressional District Republican Committee, turning their back on Cantor’s choice for a post viewed as crucial by both tea party and establishment wings in determining control of the fractured state GOP.

Today, Rep. Kerry Bentivolio announced that he has received an endorsement from Right to Life of Michigan in the Republican primary for Michigan’s 11th Congressional District. “It’s an honor to have support from Right to Life of Michigan,” said Rep. KerryBentivolio. “The most vulnerable in our society, the unborn, can't speak for themselves. That is why I promise to relentlessly fight for their protection in Congress.”

As those of you who follow my hate mail know, I am opposed to running untested candidates against perfectly good incumbent Republican senators this election cycle. It will be a long time before Republicans have as good a year as this to win a Senate majority. Unfortunately, we have idiots doing the idiot thing, pretending to be “tea partiers,” while challenging sitting Republican senators over fairly minor ideological differences.

**SNIP** But who in their right mind would pay $2000 for a single, 12.7 oz. bottle of beer? Quite a lot of people, it turns out, judging by the frenzy unleashed Wednesday over the release of “Dave,” an English Barley wine from Hair of the Dog Brewing in Portland, Oregon that sold out less than five hours after it went on sale. Admittedly, it was just a tiny batch of 12 bottles, but still. **SNIP** What’s so special about Dave? First brewed in 1994 — that’s right, it’s 19 years old! — it achieves the absurdly-high alcohol level through a...

Dear Dave, My daughter is 14, and she was recently offered a steady weekend modeling job. Do you have any advice on how to handle the money she earns? Cynthia Dear Cynthia, In terms of investing some of the money she’ll make, a Roth IRA would be pretty cool. You would have to oversee it, of course, and you’d have to file a tax return, but starting something like this when she’s 14 would help set her up for some serious money later. I think the biggest thing, however, is to make sure you create lots of teachable moments for...

Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius met Wednesday with one of the men who plans to dismantle her new health care law, Ways and Means Chairman Dave Camp. Sebelius said they didn’t discuss the repeal effort but just Ways and Means issues generally. “I look forward to working with him,” she said in a brief exchange with a POLITICO reporter as she left the Capitol. House Republicans plan to bring the repeal bill to the floor next week, when it is expected to pass.

youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wIqQb94d0t4 "The Family Media Detox Challenge" By Jim Bennett Things are a little different around the parsonage these days. We are in the midst of a burgeoning cultural renaissance. The Mrs. and I, along with our children, have agreed to give up television, movies, video games, mp3 players and social networking for the month of September. This started when we cancelled our Dish Network subscription in August. It was an unnecessary expense at a time when we’ve been tightening our belts anyway, but frankly, this isn’t merely a financial decision. It’s more like CPR for the mind. How vividly I...

It's not news that too many government workers get way too sweet of a deal in comparison to those in the private sector. It's no different in cash-strapped Detroit, one of the country's hardest-hit economic areas. Mayor Dave Bing today criticized leaders of the city's largest union [American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, or AFSCME] for foot-dragging on contract negotiations, saying it's costing the financially strapped city $500,000 a month and could result in more layoffs. "Either they can't read, they can't add or they can't comprehend," Bing said at a press conference this morning in his office...

Obama says he is alarmed by deteriorating economyUpdated: Wednesday February 4, 2009 MYT 8:46:33 AM WASHINGTON: President Barack Obama says he is alarmed at how fast the U.S. economy has deteriorated, and worrying about it keeps him up at night. In a series of network television interviews, the president said the short-term outlook is bleak. He told CNN that even three months ago, most economists would not have predicted the economy was "in as bad of a situation as we are in right now." There is "no magic bullet," he told Fox News. But he said that working with Congress...

Federal regulators have voted to impose severe restrictions on salmon fishing off the coasts of Oregon and Northern California to protect dwindling populations in the Klamath River. The Pacific Fishery Management Council decided to close about 700 miles of coastline to commercial salmon fishing for most of June and July. Those are generally the most productive months of the season.

My Meeting with Dave Armstrong. It finally happened! On a recent business trip I made to Detroit (aka "Mo-town"), I set aside a few hours to meet and get acquainted with the famed and prolific Catholic writer and apologist, Dave Armstrong, as well as his lovely family. It is easy to form opinions of people from what one reads on-line. Many times, literary personalities are quite different from the one's live persona. That has happened to me, and as a matter of personal policy, I myself try not to fall into the same error. This is an error many fall...

Chappelle's home After a brief South African ''spiritual retreat,'' comedian Dave Chappelle is back at his part-time home in Yellow Springs, Ohio, reports TV Guide Online. Fans feared Chappelle had checked into a mental facility earlier this month when news circulated he'd halted his hit Chappelle's Show to seek medical help in Africa. But the funnyman insisted he was just ''stressed out'' and needed a break. Now, Chappelle has returned to his hometown, but his agent Matt Labov insists there's still no signs that he'll return to making his show and he has been told not to book any live...

Dave Mustaine was reportedly willing to cancel Megadeth's Greek dates (to be more specific: wherever Rotting Christ are set to appear as support) due to his known dislike for black/death metal bands that depict religious issues in a negative light. Here's what a member of Megadeth's official forums posted concerning this issue and what Dave Mustaine posted in response (as found on the band's forums): # April3rd: Well, Megadeth will be playing Greece this summer. Both Athens and Thessaloniki. Although it is not yet on the Killing Road the company that organizes the concert announced that the support act for...
