Federal regulators have voted to impose severe restrictions on salmon fishing off the coasts of Oregon and Northern California to protect dwindling populations in the Klamath River.
The Pacific Fishery Management Council decided to close about 700 miles of coastline to commercial salmon fishing for most of June and July.
Those are generally the most productive months of the season.

The problem is the commercial fishing with nets. Cut out the net fishing in rivers, the mouths of rivers, and in smaller sounds and the fish will come back. One of the other problems is, they worry about WILD salmon, like there is a difference between wild and hatchery raised fish. Those that believe in evolution, will go to any length to stop changes from happening. They profess the perfection before man came, and insist on acheiving this mythical state forever.

The sea lions also kill many salmon. They take one bite and move on to the next fish.
The sea lions can not be hunted even by the local Indians who had previously hunted them for centuries.
With many fishing families and communities at risk, some folks , soon, may not be able to pay their mortgages on their boats nor their homes.

My dad's an ex-commercial salmon fisherman. This will be very, very tough on them, their families and the industry of coastal communities.

Once the PETA lawyers and emotional judges succeed in bankrupting the coastal communities, then Ted Turner and his friends will buy up the local communities.
They will build eco-resorts where their liberal Hollywood friends can find "sanctuary" at an expensive price.

The list of destroyed middle class occupations that the liberal elite attacks is amazing.
"Logging is Bad," so they say. Then small, rural towns loose their main income source and go broke.
"Mining is bad,"...same thing.
"Hunting is Bad,"...same thing.
Grazing livestock in the summer is "Bad"...
Now..."Fishing is Bad."

I voted NO.
Heck, I'd be willing to bring my old Chinese SKS and do it myself, but I bet several thousand local fishermen would beat me to it.

They have said "fishing is bad" for quite some time. In WA state, they began allowing net fishing at the spawning destinations, in the late 70's. Instead of the boats working the ocean, they set up nets in a phalanx in the sound, right in front of the river mouth.

Exactly, causing property values to drop creating a willing seller. The local conservancy then buys up the land cheap using tax dollars. They then turn around and donate the land back to the government.

Call and write to your congress and senate people.
Attend public meetings and speak up.
I do and it has helped, sometimes. At least, I feel better.
Recently, Congress passed the Healthy Forest Bill. It will take decades to overcome the decades of neglect and to be effective, but it is a small start.
Predators should be balanced. Wolf packs destroy Moose herds from Alaska to the Upper Peninsula.
Sea lions are destroying the fish populations. Bears kill baby deer and baby elk.
The PETA and Sierra Club lawyers have found emotional Judges to make scientific decisions.
We should fight the DUmmies to allow the decision makers to be educated and experienced scientists, biologists, and foresters.

How stupid are people. Well look in the mirror and tell us. The salmon you see in the stores are not from anywhere close to the west coast. If you can read, it will say "Atlantic Salmon" on the label and most of that is from growing ponds and the reddish color comes from dyes. The real salmon, Chinooks or King Salmon or the Coho or Silvers are really endangered. You probably have never tasted one. You wont get it at Safeway.

I remember in the late 1970's, watching some Indian on a Ford tractor on the Klamath, very near the mouth of the river, pulling a huge net from clear across the river, up the gravel bank that looked worn down from this, and then throwing the salmon in his pickup till the tires could take no more... Then driving off somewhere to SELL THEM!!! Not for his own eating, but to make an OBSCENE NATIVE AMERICAN PROFIT!!!
This wasn't "Chief Seattle," it was Cheap Seattle!!!

Most of those reading it, unless they've followed your excellent postings for a few years like I have, have no clue as to WHY you would say such a radical thing.
Be pursuasive by repeating your explanations, even though that probably bores you and a very few of the rest of us, to death!!! Newer FReepers and the uninitiated need your help. Thanks! (grin)

I had rather see that happen than a bunch of fat seals killing the salmon as they come in. At least there was the chance of someone getting to eat those salmon.
When the seals attack the salmon and in particuliar the hen salmon, often they target the stomach areas only. They love to eat the parts of the hen Salmon holding the eggs.
After they have dined on their choice part of the salmon, they drop the rest of the dead or dying salmon in the water and leave it to the sea gulls and crabs.

The Regulators would love to ban fishing by middle class working folks who have mortgages on their boats and on their homes.
Then their friends can buy up the empty working coastal communities.
If the regulators properly managed the sea lions, the salmon stock would be good.
But then Ted Turner, Dave Letterman, and Ron Burkle could not build their eco-resorts.
