et out the cigars—Methuselah, a Judean date palm tree that was grown from a 2,000 year old seed, has become a papa plant. Elaine Solowey, of the Arava Institute for Environmental Studies at Kibbutz Ketura in Israel, recently broke the good news to National Geographic: “He is over three meters [ten feet] tall, he's got a few offshoots, he has flowers, and his pollen is good," she says. "We pollinated a female with his pollen, a wild [modern] female, and yeah, he can make dates." Methuselah sprouted back in 2005, when agriculture expert Solowey germinated his antique seed. It had...

The 30-year-old victim, whom police did not name, arrived to meet his date at 12:25 a.m. near College Avenue and Mission Street just north of Interstate 280. When he did, two assailants advanced on him with a gun. The man’s would-be date joined the assailants in stealing his wallet, cell phone and money before all three took off in a black sedan.

A radio listener recent wrote me about an interview I did on EWTN Radio with Barbara McGuigan. I mentioned that I had been doing a teaching on dating and modesty at a Theology on Tap Session. At that session I charged the men not to leave that night until they had asked a woman out on a date. This intrigued the listener who wanted me to expand on this just a bit and what if anything she could do to get the twenty-somes in her family (both male and female) to start dating again. Here is something of the response I...

Andrew Wilcox never loses to his younger brother Ben in basketball, except for that one time he made a bet. About a month ago, the 24-year-old in Provo, Utah challenged his sibling to a round of one-on-one, noting that the loser would have to stand on a busy intersection and dance for a half hour. Turns out, Andrew was the loser. Playing the best out of three, Ben, 22, won every single basketball game. Thus, Andrew found himself booty-popping, flipping and break dancing on a cement island downtown, as documented in a YouTube video going viral this week. "I was...

DETROIT (WJBK) - Billboards reminding Detroiters their vote is their voice are all over the city. They also mistakenly say the general election is September 2. Apparently the Detroit City Clerk's Office wanted the billboards updated on September 2 with the date of the general election. Clearly, the person responsible for the work got a little confused. No one caught the mistake until Clerk Janice Winfrey spotted the botched billboards and called the president of International Outdoor on Saturday, the same day the billboards were updated. The executive told us it was an honest mistake and his company's first in...

So much for any doubts about a September taper: with the street expecting a 165K NFP number for June, the actual print of 195K following an upward revised May print of 195K as well, means the September flow fade is now virtually assured. The Unemployment Rate stayed at 7.6% despite expectations of a drop to 7.5%, although the real action was in the underemployment rate which exploded from 13.8% to 14.3%. From the report: Total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 195,000 in June, in line with the average monthly gain of 182,000 over the prior 12 months. In June, job...

A Chicago police officer allegedly turned a $132 speeding ticket into a pick-up opportunity when he later tracked down the female driver and asked her out, saying the least he could do for the money he cost her was to treat her to dinner, according to a lawsuit the woman filed in federal court. Evagelina Paredes filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Chicago, accusing police officer Chris Collins of violating her privacy, according to the Associated Press. She alleges that after she was ticketed on Oct. 22, Collins searched for her address in the motor-vehicle database and left...

The Ohio General Assembly approved a measure to combine the two scheduled 2012 primaries into a single date, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. Yesterday House Bill 369 repealed the change to two primaries which would have pushed Ohio's 2012 Presidential primary into June. The change from the traditional "Super Tuesday" date was deemed necessary because the new political redistricting map was not yet approved. Governor John Kasich signed the bill into law, making March 6 officially the 2012 primary date, according to the Dayton Daily News.

Some of the events on this date in Obama history August 22, 2010 Obama's recess appointment, Dr. Donald Berwick, to head the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services is a key figure in Physicians for Human Rights, an international organization that in recent years has been an aggressive and dishonest critic of Israel. Mila Kunis will indeed attend the Marine Corps Ball with Sgt. Scott Moore, she confirmed loud and proud Thursday, putting to rest a rumor that she'd backed out. Watch the video if you can, because she said it best: "Never did I say that I was not going." That version of events was made up, she said, "and people believed it, unfortunately." The rumor, which appeared to be based on a look at Kunis' production obligations, was sketchy but got a lot of play. "I accepted an invitation and I'm staying true to my word," the actress said at a...

(Reuters) - A court will hear oral arguments on June 8 in a government appeal of a federal judge's ruling that struck down President Barack Obama's landmark healthcare overhaul law as unconstitutional. The 11th Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta said it would hear the appeal before a randomly selected three-judge panel. The fight over the law, Obama's signature domestic accomplishment, is expected to reach the Supreme Court.

She hoped the twisted rapist would take the bait and call her -- and cops were ready when he did. In an astounding tape-recorded telephone exchange, a gutsy Queens waitress coolly played the man who had viciously raped her, coaxing him to confess his heinous attack and wrenching out a twisted apology. "I hoped he would call so I could set him up with the police," the 5-foot-2-inch, 115-pound woman told a stunned courtroom yesterday before jurors listened in silence to the several-minute-long taped conversation with her alleged knifepoint attacker, Timothy West.

I can't wait for Labor Day. I'm feeling too corporate lately. That Human Resources Department (apparently they weren't around in Caligula's day) makes me behave. I do plan to commit several Human Resource violations this weekend at the beach, but that's why it's Labor Day! Speaking of labor, I saw an interesting survey from Zoosk that might provide solace for unemployed daters: 60% of women said that they'd date an unemployed guy, up from 52% in 2009; 90% of men said they'd date someone who was unemployed versus 92% in 2009. "What do you do?" can make or break things,...
