For the first time, The Associated Press now permits journalists to use "they" as a singular pronoun. The AP announced the style change Friday at the American Copy Editors Society conference in St. Petersburg, Florida. The change follows years of questions among copy editors, reporters and editors about the use of language specifically about people who are non-binary and don't use gendered pronouns. The change is in effect online and will be in the print edition of the 2017 AP Stylebook on May 31. The new edition includes 200 new and updated entries.

Soft drinks maker Coca-Cola Co has launched a gay-friendly ad featuring a brother and sister vying for the attention of a handsome pool boy in the campaign that has won praise for diversity and inclusion. "Sibling rivalry never looked more inclusive," Out Magazine said of the commercial that debuted last week. Marketing Week also approved. The ad, part of the company's global "Taste the Feeling" campaign, features a teenage girl ogling the pool boy from a downstairs window while her brother does the same from upstairs. The duo race to the refrigerator and try to trip each other in a...

Some three and a half years ago, former Prisoner of Zion and Israeli cabinet minister Natan Sharansky was George W. Bush's favorite author. Sharansky earned an unexpected boost when the resident of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. invited him and co-author Ron Dermer to the White House and told the world that everyone should read their book, The Case for Democracy: The Power of Freedom to Overcome Tyranny & Terror. While this was not the equivalent of an invitation to Oprah Winfrey's guest couch, Sharansky's tome did make it onto The New York Times bestseller list. After the easy overthrow of Saddam...

On Sunday, I was one of roughly 100 people who gathered in Niagara Square to rally for transgender rights and protest President Donald Trumps administrations recent legislation on trans bathroom rights. It was amazing to see the outpouring support for the trans community from individuals of all ages and backgrounds. The protest was smaller than I had hoped it would be. After the Buffalo Womens March, I was optimistic that the thousands of folks who showed up for that event would continue to advocate for the minority groups impacted by the Trump administration, like transgender people. He is also an unlikely cultural warrior. That hasnt stopped him from becoming both. Besides throwing American politics into a tumult that wont end in the near future, President Trump has reoriented and reinvigorated the American culture war. A ROW has broken out after an Islamic call to prayer was held inside one of Britain's most historic cathedrals. The traditional Muslim invocation to worship was performed in front of 1,000 people at the launch of a multi-cultural Faith Exhibition at Gloucester Cathedral. Imam Hassan of the local Masjid-e-Noor mosque was invited by church leaders to carry it out in the cathedral's 11th century Chapter House. Many worshippers welcomed the "inclusive" act but some traditionalists questioned why a "different God" should be worshipped in such an iconic Christian house. A clip of the call to prayer was initially shared...

Universities across the nation are taking steps to actively purge male students of whats been labeled toxic masculinity. Examples abound of campuses hosting training sessions, group meetings, lectures and other programs to effectively cleanse what many campus leaders and left-leaning scholars contend is an unhealthy masculinity in young men today. On campus, toxic masculinity is often blamed for sexual violence, body shaming, a hyper-masculinized sporting culture, acts of domestic terrorism and much more. For example, a class at Dartmouth College this semester, The Orlando Syllabus, identifies so-called toxic masculinity as playing a role in the mass murder spree at a...

Christians are "filthy" in the sight of Allah and worthy of being looted and slaughtered "in a time of jihad," according to an American imam and professor of religious studies at a prestigious private college in Tennessee. These are words Professor Yasir Kazi now disputes he ever said. Kazi (also spelled Qadhi) is a professor of Islamic studies at Rhodes College, a four-year liberal arts college in Memphis, Tennessee. He has two master's degrees from Yale and one from the University of Medina in Saudi Arabia. He is expected to complete his doctorate soon from Yale's department of religious studies,...

A couple of weeks ago, I wrote: “Let’s not mince words, Donald Trump is a bigot and a racist.” I cited a long list of incidents in which he targeted women, Latinos, African Americans, Muslims, Asians and the disabled. Here’s what I heard back from Trump’s defenders: “Let’s not mince words,” somebody tweeted under the name Helios Megistos. “Milbank is an anti-white parasite and a bigoted kike supremacist.” “[Trump] may well be a bigot and a racist,” one Michael Banfield wrote me via email. “But one thing is certain: The only thing missing from your photo is a [vulgar word...

The NYPD hate-crimes unit is investigating threats made to a Brooklyn Civil Court judge who was sworn in on a Koran, The Post has learned. Judge Carolyn Walker-Diallo got two calls at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at the courthouse on Schermerhorn Street, law enforcement sources said on Wednesday ... David Bookstaver, a spokesman for the state's courts, said judges need only swear an oath of office that they will uphold the law, and that there are no requirements to use a religious text. "You can be sworn in on a comic book. You don't need to sign in on anything; you...

If Donald Trump secures the Republican presidential nomination, Hillary Clinton is sure to be the next U.S. president, according to Jeb Bush. Appearing on WBZ-TV Sunday morning, the former Florida governor slammed his Republican presidential opponent as "not motivated to win the presidency" and continued to proclaim that Trump is in cahoots with Clinton, the Democratic frontrunner. Bush also contended that Trump is neither a "serious person" nor a "serious candidate." "The simple fact is, his winning the primary, the Republican nomination would guarantee that Hillary Clinton will be elected president," Bush said. -snip- According to Real Clear Politics' aggregated...

According to a recent CNN/ORC poll, many white evangelical Christians in the early primary states support Donald Trump. That’s surprising. Trump’s call Monday to bar all Muslims from entering the U.S. is perhaps the biggest act of religious bigotry in modern presidential politics. Such a proposal is a total affront to the gospel of Jesus Christ. It’s stunning that Trump would ask the American people to punish Muslim refugee families for the sins of ISIS. It’s even more stunning that such positions have traction with the American electorate. As we come upon Christmas, the business mogul turned presidential candidate has...

The trial of five Muslim men and two women accused of sexually exploiting a group of young girls over a period of 13 years heard Friday that the girls were worked "like slaves" in between forced sex acts. A witness told a court in Sheffield, northern England, that she and other girls were held under lock and key by Karen MacGregor, who is accused of befriending the girls before making them available for sex with older men. The witness, who was in her teens when the alleged abuse took place and is now 43, told police that she went to...

A majority say that they view Islam unfavorably, and even Democrats are almost twice as likely to view Islam negatively than positively One week ago the United States saw the deadliest terrorist attack it has seen since 9/11, after 14 people were killed in San Bernadino by Syed Farook and his wife Tashfeen Malik. In the wake of the attack Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump took his most aggressively anti-Muslim stance so far by calling for Muslims to be barred from entry into the United States. Though the United States has millions of Muslims, anti-Muslim sentiment has become increasingly common...
