MADISON, Conn. (PIX11) – A beachgoer thought she was stopping a disturbing crime in progress, but instead found herself in handcuffs. When Andrea Mears saw a man piloting a drone at a public Connecticut beach, she thought he was surreptitiously taking pictures of bikini-clad women, so she called the police.
  • Access Health CT to make changes after security breach

The state’s Obamacare health insurance exchange is apologizing Monday and is quickly trying to make things right after a security breach. In this age of high tech security breaches, this one was decidedly low tech. A backpack was found at a deli in downtown Hartford containing hand-written notepads with names addresses and some social security numbers and letterhead from ‘Access Health CT.’ The person that found it did not call the police. They gave it to a Republican State Rep who turned it in to the Obamacare headquarters. “Access Health CT” says the notepads and backpack belong to a call-center...

A lot of attention was generated by last week's Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announcement of a proposed regulation to cut carbon emissions from existing coal-fired power plants by 30 percent from 2005 levels — all by 2030. Aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions, the effort is being billed as flexible, far-reaching and even a money-saver for American citizens. The policy is a homerun for the Obama administration, improving everything from our skies to our pocketbooks, right? Not so fast. To truly understand the implications of the EPA's announcement, it's worth sifting through the hype and asking a few clarifying questions.

The personal information of around 400 health-exchange enrollees may be compromised, according to a statement issued today by Access Health CT CEO Kevin Counihan. The statement notes that a backpack was recovered in Hartford that held “four notepads with personal information for approximately 400 individuals. The backpack also contained Access Health CT paperwork and it appears as though some of that personal information may be associated with Access Health CT accounts. It is still unclear where the backpack came from, and we are working [with] the Hartford Police Department to investigate, and contact the individuals whose information may be compromised. …...
  • Gun sales on the rise, experts say one reason is laws (CT)

Regarding gun sales, what's happening here in Connecticut is following a national trend. More people are becoming gun owners, and experts have said part of the reason has to do with what has been happening at the state Capitol. Mike Higgins, co-owner of TGS Outdoors in Branford, said he has been seeing a lot more people frequenting his shop. "We're up about 15 to 20 percent," Higgins said, adding that those percentages are a range of handgun, shotgun and rifle sales. ... While the gun sales continue to rise, experts say there is no sign of it slowing down. Some...

A demented Sandy Hook “truther” was arrested Friday in Virginia after he stole signs from playgrounds in New Jersey and Connecticut that were dedicated to tiny victims of the Newtown school massacre, police say. Andrew David Truelove, 28, lifted a sign May 6 from a Mystic, Conn., playplace dedicated to 7-year-old Grace McDonnell and also took a sign from the playground made for Chase Kowalski, also 7, in Mantoloking, N.J. He called the parents of both children after the thefts and told them the shooting was a hoax and that their children never existed. Cops in Stonington, Conn., got a...

ROCKY HILL — They didn't surrender their weapons at war, but now some Connecticut veterans are being asked to surrender their cigarettes in peacetime. Veterans living in the health care center at the state Veterans' Home will soon have to turn in their cigarettes to workers, who will give them back during specific times of the day. Residents and administrators have been battling over a long-anticipated ban on smoking at Department of Veterans' Affairs properties, including the center, which provides long-term care to veterans with medical conditions. The ban was announced in a letter to VA staff and veterans in...

Parents of children killed in the 2012 Newtown, Connecticut, school shooting joined Democrats Thursday in calling on New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie to sign a ban on ammunition magazines that hold more than 10 rounds. The measure was passed by the New Jersey Assembly Thursday and will now go to Christie for his consideration. It previously passed the state Senate. The Republican governor and potential 2016 presidential candidate signed many firearms bills into law last year. But he issued conditional vetoes of some of the more contentious ones, including a ban on .50-caliber rifles. …

Senator works to establish rights of college victims After visiting seven colleges throughout Connecticut to talk about the issue, U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal has announced he is crafting legislation to create a "bill of rights" for victims of sexual assaults on college campuses. Noting that one in five women will become a victim, Blumenthal called campus sexual assault a national epidemic. "Sexual violence is a societal issue, not a women's issue, and more must be done to protect students on campuses nationwide," he said. Blumenthal is working with Sens. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., and Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., on legislative proposals that...

Challengers see themselves in the Texas senator, even in races where their odds of an upset are considered steeper than Cruz’s surprise victory over a GOP establishment figure two years ago. He’s made endorsements in the Oklahoma and Nebraska Senate races, plus the Nebraska gubernatorial race, and sent almost $26,000 to federal candidates through his leadership PAC. “Ted Cruz would be extremely helpful as an endorser and a fundraiser,” said C. Edmund Wright, a consultant to longshot South Carolina Senate hopeful Lee Bright, in an email. “Rand Paul and Mike Lee would be great also.” But, he said, “the reason...

Today, Kerry observed, America seems to have swung from an “excess of intervention” in the world to an “excess of isolation.” “Today, the felt needs are growing at a faster pace than ever before, piling up on top of each other while the response in legislatures of foreign capitals seems nonexistent or frozen,” Kerry said. “It’s not that the needs aren’t felt. It’s that people around the world seem to have grown used to seeing systems or institutions failing to respond. The result is an obvious, deepening frustration, if not exasperation, with institutional governance.” A world of deferred decisions and...
