USS Missouri - (10 Gun paddle wheel frigate) Commissioned 1841, lost to an accidental fire at Gibraltar in 1843.

Missouri - Confederate ram, turned over to the USN at the end of the war and scrapped.

USS Missouri (BB-11) - Pre-dreadnought battleship, in service 1900-1922

USS Missouri (BB-63) - Fast Battleship, in service 1944-1955, 1984-1992

USS Missouri (SSN-780) - Attack Submarine, not yet in commission.

They can build them much faster, but this is he best way to maintain the industrial base, to ensure we have these experts around when we really need them.

Two years build time.

The SEAWOLF Class. The USS SEAWOLF (SSN 21), the USS CONNECTICUT (SSN-22) and the USS JIMMY CARTER (SSN-23) are in Bremerton Washington. They will no longer build these, because this was a Cold War design, and extremely expensive in comparison to the Virginia Class. The JIMMY CARTER replaced the PARCHE as our special mission spy sub, and had a special designed hull section added for its special mission it was commission in 2005. It is 100 feet longer than the other two.

They want to build two of these per year. They are almost to that point. From beginning to end it takes about 6 years to build one. The conception of a new submarine class is about 15 years prior to the finished construction of the first boat.

Seems like they were working on the USS Kentucky and wound up making a carrier out of the hull. I love the look of those Iowa class battleships. I guess we’ve lost the “knowledge” to build these now.

Enough already with the Romney slamming. It seems to me there is a Wolf in Sheep’s clothing amoung us. The slamming of Romny and the propping up of Palin will only mean a sure victory for Obama; maybe that is your true intension. Everyone with half a brain knows that Palin is too divisive for America to vote for her, and having her on the ticket would only guarantee victory for the Dem, but like I said, maybe that is your true intension.

I was hoping that the Pres or Vice President was going to come, but the helos that circle above the Thames when they are in town, are no where in site.

The media made a big deal about the USS NEW YORK CITY, for obvious reasons, but this ship is almost twice the cost of that ship.

They have have a vertical launch system. They do carry Tomahawks. In fact even the Los Angelos Class carry these, they open the Gulf War up with a Tomahawk launch from a Los Angelos Class submarine.

Actually, it seems that the Virginia class subs are one of the "biggest bang for the buck" in our arsenal, so to speak. While it's an ostensibly an attack sub, it's also designed to gather electronic and other intelligence, can stay on-station "hovering" just above the sea floor, and is designed to insert and recover special operations teams, even in shallow water.

Plus, I believe that they are capable of firing Tomahawk missiles.

Nuclear attack submarines, do create jobs. However, the jobs that submarines do are amazing. A lot of our national security can be attributed to our submarine force. It would be a big deal if we decide to never build them again.

The Virginia class submarine is one of the few major weapons systems that is on budget. In fact the program is on track to reduce costs by 25% over the next few years.

The Virginia is an attack class submarine meaning it hunts and kills boats with nuclear missiles targetted for the US. The majority of our strategic nuclear warheads are now launched from Ohio class submarines which are also protected by Virginia and LA Class boats. Ohio submarines are also hunted by enemy attack class submarines.

The silent service guys don't do enough marketing with the general public to demonstrate how vital they are to national security.

I am not allowed to bring a camera into Electric Boat. It would be a security violation.
