WITHIN the conduct of human endeavors we usually think of Work in the categories of various forms of interpersonal reporting hierarchies, even if sometimes modified into something of a web. You can see these hierarchies when we discuss politics or corporate structures. Yet these paths of influence can often cross nominal boundaries, such as state or national boundaries, or corporate boundaries. Sometimes we can see the boundaries breaking down, with new inter-and-intra-community structures forming. In this flux I see the the GNU Project bleeding into Microsoft. There are a number of empirical signs of the breakdown of boundaries between Free...

San Francisco (AFP) - YouTube on Monday shut down six far-right channels for violating rules against "supremacist" content, booting videos by David Duke, Stefan Molyneux and Richard Spencer. The video sharing platform pulled the plug on the channels as online social media platforms face increasing pressure to crack down on hateful rhetoric. "We have strict policies prohibiting hate speech on YouTube, and terminate any channel that repeatedly or egregiously violates those policies," YouTube said in response to an AFP inquiry about the move. Since updating guidelines a year ago to better address supremacist content, YouTube saw a fivefold spike in...

'Reimagined' flagships to endure, but that place you used to go to when the Apple Store was too busy is going away Microsoft has a new approach to retail. One, it appears, that does not involve its physical store locations. In a filing with the United States Securities and Exchange Commission, the company has announced what it calls "a strategic change in its retail operations".Or, in other words, shutting down its network of physical Microsoft Stores and going digital-only via Microsoft.com and Xbox. The company said it would be taking a pre-tax charge of approximately $450m to do the deed, which will...

I was thinking about what @john the owner of Parler said about investment... He does not believe he can get investment from Silicon Valley because he is in direct competition with them. Apparently Dan Bongino has invested but that got me thinking... Why doesn't he crowd fund the investment? Would you kick in for a piece of the pie? Crowd funding is nothing new. There are many companies/websites where you can setup projects to appeal for capital from smaller investors (like ourselves). Do you think this would be a good idea? Anyone familiar with crowd funding and think it can...

A Nigerian influencer who posted photos of his life of luxury on private jets has been arrested amid claims of a £350million cyberscam. The FBI seized more than £30million in cash when they stormed the apartment of 38-year-old Raymond Abbas in Dubai when he was sleeping. Investigators say the Instagram star portrayed a billionaire lifestyle in order to 'lure victims from all over the world'.

@MarkDice YouTube has taken down a video from a chess channel because it appears the A.I. detected language in the video about black vs white chess pieces and thought the guy was being racist! (Not a joke). Here's the poor dude's video explaining the details:

Jim Jordan, Elise Stefanik and Nikki Haley all have something in common, other than a strong affection towards President Trump. The three Republican politicians joined social media app Parler this week, adding their profiles to a site that’s emerged as the new digital stomping ground for anti-Twitter conservatives. Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas arrived earlier this month and Rep. Devin Nunes of California started in February, while Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky has been a member since 2018, the year the app launched. “It’s about time y’all joined me on @parler_app,” Paul tweeted on Wednesday. “What’s taking the rest of...

Agadmator runs an extremely popular chess-only youtube channel / subscription and it has been on with no problems for YEARS. He has a deffinite accent so I think he is of (a guess) slavic ancestry but speaks fluent English. Has done thousands(?) of game analysis for eras from Paul Morphy to current world Grand Master Magnus Carlsen. He was doing an interactive podcast when he got blocked by Youtube about an hour in. An immediate protest was almost immediately denied. Most likely an algorithm / bot, but an increasingly obvious hyper-sensitive Youtube habit.

Our Verizon 'box' is driving us nuts. Early today, it began loudly beeping every three minutes. When this happened in the past, we either found a loose connection and fixing that solved the problem, or just removed the battery until we could replace it. This time, we have tried everything - looked it up and watched videos, etc.; but nothing we've done has stopped the beep. (Our situation doesn't even seem to 'fit' the advice we're seeing - our 'low battery' light has never gone on.) A couple of times today, we've seemed to hear another unit's box beeping somewhere...

Vice is calling on marketers and agencies to once again reassess keyword blocklists as new words have been added to advertisers’ do-not-buy lists amid the protests against racial injustice. During its NewFront presentation on Wednesday, the company said brand marketers need to call upon their agencies to review and question the words that make up their blocklists. Over the past few weeks, the company notes that those words now include “George Floyd,” “protest,” and “Minneapolis.” And one agency that represents a large entertainment company sent a blocklist that even included "Black Lives Matter" and "Black people" the same week the...

Jenna Mourey, a.k.a. Jenna Marbles, one of the most popular creators on YouTube, announced she would take a break from the platform in a video apologizing for old and offensive content uploaded on Thursday. "I think I'm just going to move on from this channel, for now," Mourey said in the tearful apology video, adding that she doesn't know whether her step away from YouTube will be temporary or permanent. "I want to make sure that the things that I've put into the world aren't hurting anyone."

Toward the end of his new book, The Return of Great Power Rivalry, Matthew Kroenig offers sensible if tentative advice for responding to China’s ambitions for technological leadership: U.S. government investments in basic science and R&D have been critical in past technological breakthroughs, including nuclear power and the Internet. . . and the United States could do more to invest in the technologies of the future. Democracies are often slow to build consensus for a problem, and that helps them to avoid mistakes. But when a national consensus is achieved, they can mass resources toward a problem just as...

For years, x86 processors and Linux have ruled supercomputing. Linux still runs 500 out of the TOP500 supercomputers in the world. For just about as long, x86 CPUs have dominated supercomputers -- until now. On June 22, Japan's Fugaku supercomputer, powered by Fujitsu's 48-core A64FX SoC and running Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), became the first ARM-powered supercomputer to be dubbed the fastest computer in the world. In winning over the others, it wasn't even close. Fugaku turned in a High-Performance Linpack (HPL) result of 415.5 petaflops, besting the second-place IBM Summit system by a factor of 2.8x. Fujitsu has been...
