The Franklin County Prosecuting Attorney says no charges will be filed against a sheriff deputy whose son died while playing with a gun. Four year old Aiden Mehlbauer was hit with a bullet in the stomach and died last Wednesday. Police say Aiden Mehlbauer and his twin brother, Mason were in the basement of their home playing around 4 p.m. that afternoon. Their mother told investigators she was upstairs helping her six year old daughter with her homework. The boys were apparently in an office area currently under construction in which the boys' father, Greg Mehlbauer, a Franklin County Sheriff's...

The Big East's football expansion plans leave the conference with 17 universities, including non-Football members. That's a terrible number for scheduling; the only way the basketball teams can schedule an even number of games is if they play every other team only once. 18 teams would allow three divisions of six teams each. Any team would play the other five teams in its division twice, and one half of the twelve other teams in the conference. 18 sounds like worsening the problem of too many teams, but having three divisions could actually restore some rivalries, and return the conference to...
  • Is the Archdiocese of Cincinnati Experiencing a 'Schism' Over CCHD?

A troubling headline at the Cincinnati Enquirer: Schism develops over Catholic campaignA 'schism' is a clear break in the Church as a response to heresy. 'Heresy' is a clear rejection of a dogma of the Church. Rich Leonardi, of Ten Reasons, is quoted: "The groups funded are consistently highly political and always political in one direction." And... "You end up with these very hard left groups with a very partisan agenda." Does that indicate a charge of 'heresy'? It's debatable. Tony Stieritz, director of social action at the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, whose office Mr. Leonardi claims "sponsored a talk by a...

The nearest I ever got to Sparky Anderson in person was four years ago. At a funeral. I'm not even close to making this one up. Larry Sherry, the 1959 World Series MVP for the Los Angeles Dodgers (Anderson was once a minor league infielder in the Dodger organisation, before spending a miserable season as a good-glove-bad-bat Philadelphia Phillies infielder), had died after a long bout with cancer. I wrote a pleasant little tributary to the old righthander and, within hours of its publication, I received a pleasant communique from Sherry's son-in-law. He thanked me for the kind words and...

It's absolutely the perfect metaphor. There is a saying that goes "Give a man a fish and he'll eat today. Teach a man to fish and he'll eat tomorrow."It's been long recognized that Democrats have no interest in teaching anyone how to fish. They want to keep people hooked and on the line for as long as possible. They pander to the lowest common denominator. They pander to illegal aliens as future voters. Democrats have done nothing but make society worse and more dependent. The great achievement of the Democratic Party in the 20th century was to create vast government bureaucracies...

ELMWOOD PLACE, Ohio-- A birthday party for a 3-year-old turned into a brawl at a hall in Elmwood Place overnight Tuesday. Police said the mother and step-father threw the party for the child and invited the child's biological father. At some point during the party the biological father, Ramon Marcela-Hernandez, 26, made a move on the mother, which angered the step-father, police said. Marcela-Hernandez left, but returned with a few more people, police said. Police said a fight broke out just after 1 a.m. between the two men and beer bottles and chairs were thrown. Reports said that at one...

On Saturday, the Cincinnati Reds celebrated the 25th anniversary of Pete Rose's 4,192d hit, which broke Ty Cobb's career hits record. Later that night, at a roast of Rose at a casino in Indiana, Rose broke down and cried as he made a heartfelt apology for his involvement in betting on baseball. "I disrespected the game of baseball," Rose said. "When you do that, you disrespect your teammates, the game and your family."
  • The One Man Who Can Stop Albert Pujols From Winning the Triple Crown (not Votto of Cincinnati)

The Bleacher Report ^ | 8/25/10 | By Joseph DelGrippo (Featured Columnist)
During Monday night's St. Louis Cardinals loss to the last-place (and worst record in baseball) Pittsburgh Pirates, Albert Pujols was 3-for-5 with a double, raising his batting average to .322. I know this stat is not important to saber heads (please bear with us), but for this argument it is imperative. Meanwhile, on the west coast, Cincinnati's Joey Votto went 1-for-4 in a 13-5 drubbing by the now offensively resurgent San Francisco Giants. That effort dropped Votto's season average to .323, a single point above Pujols. With Pujols ahead in the National League in home runs (33) and RBI (92),...
  • Jerry Springer: President Obama's an Excellent

Jerry Springer knows plenty about arguments and fights: He's presided over the raucous and controversial "Jerry Springer Show" since 1991. And he knows a thing or two about politics, as well, having once served as the mayor of Cincinnati. He took his experience in both areas to Sean Hannity's program Thursday night, and the two duked it out over Barack Obama's presidency. "I think Barack Obama has done a good job as president," Springer said. "In fact, I'd say even better than good. Do I agree with every single thing he's done? No. Is America perfect yet? Of course not....
  • Ohio's Bedbug Battle Escalates with EPA Crisis Meeting

For reasons still unknown, bedbugs really seem to like the state of Ohio. The problem is so dire in Cincinnati that some people with infested apartments have resorted to sleeping on the streets. Cincinnati created a Bedbug Remediation Commission in 2007 and, like other local and national governments around the world, the city is trying to mobilize strategies to control infestations of the resilient insects, which can hide in almost any crack or crevice and can go a year or more without eating. On Aug. 10, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a consumer alert about off-label bedbug treatments,...

You've heard the spiel about Jerry Springer. British-born lawyer becomes mayor of Cincinnati, loses a bid for Ohio governor amid scandal, excels at a job anchoring the local news and eventually starts hosting his own talk program that becomes what TV Guide dubbed "the worst TV show ever." And that's just the appetizer. Springer, 66, made a sympathetic turn on 'Dancing With the Stars,' then came 'America's Got Talent,' a short stage run in 'Chicago,' and now his very own hit game show on GSN, 'Baggage.' In a gab session with PopEater's resident political junkie, the liberal Springer warned against...

  • Amid harsh criticisms, 'tea party' slips into the mainstream

Their faces sometimes twisted in anger, 'tea party' followers have been called neo-Klansmen and knuckle-dragging hillbillies. To be sure, angry town halls, the N-word thrown at black congressmen, and signs comparing President Obama to Adolf Hitler play into the hands of the movement's critics. And demonizing tea party activists tends to energize the Democrats' left-of-center base. But political experts say that many such criticisms are near-sighted, if not outright inappropriate – and ultimately may miss the point. Indeed, polls suggest that tea party activists are not only more mainstream than many critics suggest, but that a majority of them are...
