This week, Switzerland's attorney general completed a legal opinion on the question of whether Snowden could be granted political asylum if he traveled to Switzerland to testify about the National Security Agency's surveillance activities in the Swiss homeland. The AG's office concluded that Snowden would be given asylum as long as prior obligations made by higher-level Swiss officials did not take priority.

A CIA spokesman says a new intelligence assessment estimates that the Islamic State group can muster between 20,000 and 31,500 fighters across Iraq and Syria, up from a previous figure of 10,000. The new assessment is based on a review of intelligence reports from May to August. It is larger than the 20,000 figure being used by many outside experts.

New emails released Thursday appear to show that a former Los Angeles Times reporter had a “closely collaborative” relationship with the CIA, submitting drafts of stories to intelligence officials before submitting them for publication. Ken Dilanian, now an Associated Press intelligence reporter, explicitly promised “positive news coverage” with one news story, according to The Intercept, which obtained emails he exchanged with intelligence officials. He added that he thought the particular report would be “reassuring to the public” about drone strikes.
