I'm a baby-boomer. American-born Mom was the child of Polish Jews scrapping by through the Great Depression in the land of plenty. They lost everything. Nothing went to waste ever again. We barely threw a garbage bag out once a week. Her favorite times of year were the baseball and holiday seasons. She loved wintertime songs, so many written by Jewish immigrants and their firstborn. The music reminded her of good times during a rocky early life. Judy Garland's rendition of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" captivated Mom. Carl Sigman's 1949 lyrics to "A Marshmallow World," performed by Bing Crosby, Ella...

First, what are your favorite Christmas songs? I would name Silver Bells, Do You Hear What I Hear, and White Christmas by Bing Crosby, Holly Jolly Christmas by Burl Ives, O Come, O Come, Emmanuel by Enya, Frosty the Snowman, and Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. Second, what are some hymns, and other pieces of Christian music, that resonate at Christmas?

Dear friends, I grew up in the world for 24 years before I came to Christ, so I know its thinking and ways because I once lived it and walked its course (Eph. 2:1-14). As I was at work today, they were playing the world's Christmas carols which have a secular and demonic mood to it of utopia through relativism and bankrupt human love; which excludes RIGHTEOUSNESS and Almighty God man's ETERNAL RIGHTEOUS Creator (Rom. 1:18-32). One song that was played today was John Lennon's, So This Is Christmas (War is Over). I had to laugh as I listened to...

Best Advent Hymn! I Wonder If You’ve Ever Heard of It Msgr. Charles Pope • December 17, 2017 • For my money, the best Advent hymn ever is Veni Redemptor Gentium (Come Redeemer of the Nations), written by St. Ambrose in the 4th century. It is more widely known by the title “Come Thou Redeemer of the Earth.” Sadly, it is not often sung in Catholic parishes today. Most Catholics I’ve asked have never even heard of it.One of the beautiful things about the ancient Latin hymns is how richly theological they are. Not content to merely describe an...

'Twas a few nights before Christmas and all through the street, Not a creature was stirring except this piano geek; The lights were all hung on the houses with care, In hopes that Jon wouldn't play piano there; The people were nestled all snug in their beds, While visions of cello music danced in their heads; And Paul in his t-shirt and Al in his boots Had just settled down for an all night video shoot. When out in the street arose such a clatter, People sprang from their beds to see what was the matter Out the windows they...

In HateSong, we ask our favorite musicians, writers, comedians, actors, and so forth to expound on the one song they hate most in the world. The hater: Kyle Kinane hates a lot of things: unsliced pizza, boasting about voting, and those Subway ads where adults talk in child voices. Thus, on the eve of Kinane’s Comedy Central special Whiskey Icarus, The A.V. Club thought it only fitting—and in keeping with the season—to ask the comedian about his least favorite Christmas song. The hated: “The Little Drummer Boy,” originally written in 1941 Kyle Kinane: Musically, there’s nothing wrong with the song....

The atheist radio program “Freethought Radio” has been axed in Madison, Wis., the victim of a format change. In its place? Twenty-four hours a day of Christmas music. It’s like getting run over by reindeer. “The Freedom From Religion Foundation’s radio show has been unceremoniously yanked off the air locally,” says the group’s press release, released Nov. 11. According to its website, the nonprofit group has more than 23,500 members and acts as a voice for free thought — atheism, agnosticism, skepticism. The radio program, which has been around for a decade and is hosted by husband-and-wife team Annie Laurie...
