In honor of the January 6 incursion into the Capitol, Former President Barack Obama released a statement asserting that "one year ago a violent attack on our Capitol made it clear just how fragile the American experiment in democracy really is. In the November 2020 election more than 81 million votes were cast for Joe Biden. Rather than accepting this ringing endorsement for the person voters wanted to rule them for the next four years, Republicans are still working to torpedo his agenda." "As the last year has demonstrated, the average American has supported the President by obeying his request...

The George Floyd Justice in Policing Act on which the Democratic-led House is scheduled to vote Thursday does not ban chokeholds on the state and local level. The bill defines a “chokehold or carotid hold” as “the application of any pressure to the throat or windpipe, the use of maneuvers that restrict blood or oxygen flow to the brain, or carotid artery restraints that prevent or hinder breathing or reduce intake of air of an individual.” According to the bill’s text, “a state or unit of local government may not receive funds under the Byrne grant program or the COPS...

Less than a week after France announced it would abandon police chokeholds, the government responded to growing officer discontent by announcing it would test stun guns for wider use, adding to the ranks of European law enforcement agencies that have recently adopted the weapons that many in the U.S. equate with excess police violence. Then, on Monday, the government backed away from a complete chokehold ban, saying it would no longer teach the maneuver to recruits but allow its use until a better alternative emerges. For Johny Louise, it felt as though the 22 seconds of Taser pulses that led...

NYPD fires Officer Daniel Pantaleo in chokehold death of Eric Garner NYPD cop Daniel Panatelo has been fired for causing the chokehold death of Eric Garner, Police Commissioner James O’Neill announced Monday. O’Neill’s widely expected decision to fire the embattled cop endorsed the recommendation of a deputy commissioner who presided over Pantaleo’s departmental trial earlier this year. It also came after Mayor Bill de Blasio proclaimed that Garner’s family was “going to get justice…in the next 30 days” during a Democratic presidential primary debate on July 31.

An autopsy found that financier Jeffrey Epstein sustained multiple breaks in his neck bones, according to two people familiar with the findings, deepening the mystery about the circumstances around his death. Among the bones broken in Epstein's neck was the hyoid bone, which in men is near the Adam's apple. Such breaks can occur in those who hang themselves, particularly if they are older, according to forensics experts and studies on the subject. But they are more common in victims of homicide by strangulation, the experts said. (please see full article at link)

Campaigning at the Western Idaho Fair isn't anything new; both Democratic and Republican parties have had a regular presence at the end-of-summer celebration for as long as anyone can remember. But social media lit up late Saturday with a photo of this year's GOP booth at the fair revealed a prominently displayed a doctored but life-size photo of President Donald Trump with his arms locked around the neck of Hillary Clinton. The photo caught widespread attention when Diana Lachiondo, candidate for the Ada County Legislature, posted an image of the display on Facebook. "Holly smokes! This got a lot of...

A police officer was arrested Monday on a charge of involuntary manslaughter, accusing him of killing an unarmed man with a martial arts-type neck hold after a chase through a Las Vegas Strip casino, authorities said. Kenneth Lopera, 31, posted $6,000 bail and was released from jail with an August court date in the May 14 choking death of 40-year-old Tashii S. Brown after a chase through back hallways of The Venetian casino

Justice scheme likened to ‘old Soviet Union or Venezuela’(Daily Signal) – For the first time this year, Congress will get a chance to directly question the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) over its involvement in Operation Choke Point. In a hearing this afternoon led by Rep. Sean Duffy, R-Wis., who calls Operation Choke Point “the greatest government overreach that no one is talking about,” the Financial Services Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations will probe FDIC Chairman Martin Gruenberg. “The FDIC should send a strong message that it will not tolerate this kind of abuse within the agency,” Duffy told The...

Much has alrteady been said of the alleged choke hold employed by officer Panatelo against Eric Garner and the resulting turn of events that ultimately ended with Garner's death. I have watched the video dozens of time and would like to offer my own perspective, as an ER nurse, of what happened. I will include two You Tube video links as references. In video number 1, we observe the initial confrontation between Garner and the police. At 38 seconds, officer Pantaleo has attempted to subdue Garner and we see his left arm going around Garner's neck. This is the beginning of...

If you’re in New York right now trying to get somewhere, good luck. The streets are full of idiots screaming “I Can’t Breathe”. There are lots of signs about white supremacism, imperialism and justice. Justice being the thing that happens when a court does something, not when a lynch mob demands something. Hipsters are lying down stiffly in Grand Central Station. NYPD cops are collecting overtime thanks to the morons screaming at them. The Revolutionary Communist Party and its splinter group, the Really Revolutionary Communist Party are out in force with signs. It’s hard to pick the ten biggest idiots...

The white New York police officer who choke-held unarmed Eric Garner leading to his death had earlier been sued thrice for alleged misconduct. A UN Special Rapporteur has expressed concern over a "pattern of impunity," citing two grand juries' failure to indict officers involved in the deaths of two black civilians. Last year, Darren Collins and Tommy Rice alleged in a federal court lawsuit that the officer, Daniel Pantaleo, and four other officers humiliated and unlawfully strip-searched them publicly after handcuffing them during their arrest on Staten Island the previous year, Detroit Free Press reports. The cops, who were searching...

NYPD sources confirm that Eric Garner was a player in an organized crime cigarette smuggling syndicate, Gotnews.com has learned.(snip) “Garner was setting up shop in front of the local stores and shaking down business owners and patrons as they entered,” says Cardillo. Garner would use his considerable size to strong arm largely ethnic shopkeepers and was “on the radar” of local law enforcement who had arrested him previously.

PoliceOne.com is a discussion forum for law enforcement officers, and while anyone can access some of the site content, commenting privileges are available exclusively to verified police. The PoliceOne.com staff "confirm[s] the status of all officers registering for PoliceOne by calling that officer's department directly." That detail is important, because it means that these responses to the Eric Garner verdict were definitely made by actual police officers: ...

A textbook example of unintended consequences is provided by the heavy cigarette taxes levied in some US states-- each sets its own rate, and they vary wildly: Missouri's state cigarette tax is 17 cents. It's $4.35 in New York... Thus, the ATF says the federal gub'ment loses $5 billion in tax revenue every year from the trafficking of illegal cigarettes. Worldwide, it's a $100 billion problem, and it's the No. 1 economic crime in Europe. Couldn't be any simpler: cigarettes are purchased by organized crime types in a low-tax state, who then truck them in for sale back in a...

A New York City Grand Jury has refused to indict police officer Danial Pantaleo for the choking death of Eric Garner. Garner was taken down by four police officers conducting a raid against illegal cigarette sellers, of which Garner was one. Garner had a history of selling illegal cigarettes, having been arrested for it a number of times in the past. Unlike the death of Michael Brown, this death was caught on video. The video clearly shows several things. It absolutely shows Garner saying he can’t breathe. It also shows a very large man who starts out the confrontation making...

In a way, this is all eerily familiar. The failure of a New York City grand jury to indict a police officer who killed a large African-American man for resisting arrest seems prima facie to be quite similar to the facts of the case which set the town of Ferguson ablaze. But the similarities end there. The Eric Garner’s killing was captured on camera. He was confronted by a number of NYPD for being suspected of selling loose cigarettes, and for robbing the city of the exorbitant taxes placed on the sale of that product. Thought to be resisting...
