Improvements in life spans, education and incomes are slowing due to natural disasters, misguided government policies and worsening inequality in a world where the 85 richest people have as much wealth as the 3.5 billion poorest people, the United Nations said Thursday in its annual human development report. With nearly a third of humanity poor or vulnerable to poverty, governments need to put a higher priority on creating jobs and providing basic social services, the United Nations Development Program said in the report, launched in Tokyo. It warned that improvements in longevity, education and income, which are the three main...

His pilot's license fresh in his hands, an Indiana teenager set out in June for the adventure of a lifetime: an around-the-world flight with his father designed to break a record and raise money to build schools in his father's native Pakistan. Just days before the father and son were to return home to Indiana, the trip turned tragic when their plane crashed in the Pacific Ocean shortly after leaving Pago Pago in American Samoa on Tuesday night. The body of 17-year-old Haris Suleman was recovered, but crews were still searching Wednesday for the father, Babar Suleman. The Sulemans left...

Because the Kenyan squatter is in town, Tim Conway show was discussing fundraisers. Callers, who have attended fundraisers, were phoning in and telling what happens at the events. Here is the best anecdote. A young cadet from Cal State Fullerton was there with other cadets as part of the Honor Guard. When Reagan greeted them, he asked the cadet his name and was open to a question from him. The cadet said, "Can I ask anything?" The President said he could. So the cadet said (paraphrasing) - Cadet - Mr. President, do you remember when you were doing a sound...

Since O is back in town, Timmy was asking his audience if anyone had ever been to one of these costly meet and greet fundraisers and met any of our Presidents. I'm going in and out of the room with the radio on, so I didn't catch the beginning of this one call, but the woman had been to one for Ronald Reagan. When she got her chance for the quick one-on--one moment with President Reagan, she asked him about the recent time when, at a sound check for a public event, he made that crack about dropping the bombs...

A Massachusetts teenager charged with raping and murdering his teacher last year after following her into a bathroom followed a chillingly similar plan when he attacked a female jail counselor last month in the youth detention center where he was being held, authorities say. Chism's attorney, Denise Regan, did not challenge the bail or conditions of bail. She asked that her client be excused from his next scheduled court appearance on September 19 because of the stress it causes him.

Austin is finally eating food for the first time in week. “I’m on anti-seizure medication,” he told WTSP. Earlier this month, Austin caught a mutton snapper that his mom cooked for dinner. “I couldn’t eat, couldn’t breath,” Austin told the station. “This was very serious,” his mom, Karen Goncalves added. “It could have ended our lives.” Austin, his friend, Karen, and her boyfriend were all suffering from Ciguatera, which is a potentially fatal illness...

Her hearing isn't great, and her legs are weakening too. She doesn't have much appetite either, often finishing only a small portion of her meals. But you will never hear Madam Chua Sua Teh complaining about her age. Indeed, the 100-year-old woman can still play a mean game of Wii bowling. Despite the usual effects of ageing, Madam Chua is simply happy that she has hit the 100-year mark this year. She told The New Paper last Thursday in Teochew: "I don't worry myself with thoughts about death or illness, I simply live one day at a time, and make...

A new book sets out to answer some big questions about the brain and bodies of water. "Blue Mind" explores why so many of us are drawn to the ocean, and how this scientifically connects to our health and happiness, CBS News correspondent Ben Tracy reports. Most of us know that feeling of calm we get when we are on, in or just near the water. "This is what you want if you're in the midst of a stressful week," said Wallace J. Nichols, a marine biologist and conservationist who lives near the central coast of California. "You just want...

Israel at war with Hamas. Endless rockets hitting/taking out targets, injuring&killing innocent individuals in Israel. So why aren't the Jewish Liberal Leaders showing any outrage towards the Democrat Run White House? There are many terrible children's programs through which parents must suffer during their child's young life. For every Sesame Street, there is an annoying Caillou or an acid-trippy Yo Gabba Gabba. But Thomas and Friends is – or was – the one show with enough subversive messages to make me turn it off for good. My son, now three-and-a-half years old, thankfully never never went through a manic train fascination like so many other children. But once in a while, he'd get a bug in his brain to watch Thomas, and every time I sat and watched with him, I...

Lee McDougal saved his Golden Retriever from an alligator attack. WOFL reports that the alligator attacked the dog when McDougal was out walking her. “With all the rain the swamp area filled up a little more, she decided to jump in on the swamp side, instead of the lagoon side, and the gator didn’t want to share it with her,” McDougal explained to the station. “I reached down to grab her and grabbed the gator and just jerked him up, and when I did, I seen a big head and she went back that way and as soon as I...

What you have with you is what you gonna have for some time if you find yourself in urban survival scenario. If you have stored food and water most probably you can count on that only for some time, before situation changes or you manage to find some more supplies. There are ways to obtain resources at the beginning of SHTF in the chaos, but it is not like in the movies, and you can count on the fact that mostly you will be late for these events and more organized units such as local gangs control who gets what...

Perrette's severe allergic reaction landed her in the hospital.NCIS actress Pauley Perrette suffered a severe allergic reaction caused by her hair dye that landed her in the hospital. The 45-year-old star, who plays forensic scientist Abby Sciuto on the hit show, warned her Twitter followers to be careful about hair dye allergies in order to avoid having their heads "swell up like a melon" or worse.
