Following in the tradition of "McClintock" a couple of weeks ago, today's feature is another Shakespearean Western. Leonard Maltin calls it "Othello On The Range" and it's an apt description. Ernest Borgnine plays the Othello character, Rod Steiger's Iago, Valerie French is Desdemona and Glenn Ford is the Cassio character. Also starring Charles Bronson and Felicia Farr(Mrs. Jack Lemmon). Sidenote: I believe both Ford and Borgnine were Republicans.

This drama about a man who takes the law into his own hands was wildly controversial upon first release, sparking much debate about the perceived pro-vigilante stance of the story, and established Charles Bronson as a major box office draw in the United States. Paul Kersey (Charles Bronson) is a liberal architect living in New York City. One day, a group of drug-crazed thugs break into his apartment while he's gone, killing his wife Joanna (Hope Lange) and brutally raping his married daughter, leaving her comatose. When the police are unable to find the culprits, Kersey arms himself and begins...

Johannesburg - The South African government's continued failure to bring crime under control is leading a growing number of citizens to start taking the law into their own hands, often with deadly results. "It is sometimes justifiable," says Frits Kreil, who runs a self-styled "community policing forum" in Johannesburg's northern Randburg suburb. "People are fed up with crime and resort to killing to protect their lives and those of their loved ones." In one of the latest such incidents, three members of an armed gang were killed when a local at a pub in the suburb of Emmarentia opened fire...

“Then what is it you want?” “I want, what they want, and every other guy who came over here and spilled his guts and gave everything he had wants! For our country to love us as much as we love it. That’s what I want!”Such were the words of Vietnam War veteran and American icon John Rambo at the end of Rambo: First Blood Part II, the second highest grossing film of 1985. But despite the boffo success of Rambo and a few other summer flicks, Hollywood 1985 suffered through the biggest box office slump ever recorded. Until now that...

Charles Bronson made a few good movies, a lot more lousy ones, and, either way, piled up enough dough to buy a horse farm in West Windsor, Vermont, a little way's down the Connecticut River from me. I wish I could say I'd seen his great craggy face and weary eyes hunched over a steaming mug of coffee in the booth of the local diner. But, as far as I can tell from reported local sightings, he tended to favour the tonier joints, like the basement café at Rosey Jekes in Hanover, New Hampshire and the chi-chi boutiques of Woodstock,...

EHRENFELD, Pa. -- The tiny hometown of movie tough guy Charles Bronson might honor him with a historical marker and a renamed street.

Then again, it might not.

Many residents of the borough of 234 people say Bronson -- born Charles Buchinsky on Nov. 3, 1921 -- rarely visited or looked up childhood friends.

Jewish World Review Sept. 5, 2003 /8 Elul 5763 Paul Greenberg Death Wish http://www.NewsAndOpinion.com | Sometimes the liveliest stories in the paper can be found on the obituary page. Obituaries are more than a way of honoring the dead; they can instruct the living. Especially if the obituary is of someone whose life we shared, even vicariously. Like a prominent politician or author, for example, or a movie star we've grown old with. Consider the obituary of Charles Bronson, 81. That's right: Mr. Tough Guy. He'd started out as Charles Bunchinsky of Ehrenfield, Pa., born Nov. 3, 1921, 11th of...

The family and friends of legendary actor Charles Bronson are gathering together after The Dirty Dozen star was given only days to live. Death Wish star Brosnan has been fighting Alzheimer's Disease for the past two years, and suffered organ failure earlier this month. Doctors tending to the 81-year old have told his family to prepare for the worst and say their last goodbyes to the star. A relative tells British tabloid The Sun, "(The Alzheimer's) is heartbreaking. He doesn't know he was an actor, let alone a big star." The Great Escape actor's wife Kim is now making final...

My friends from Florida and in other places, this modest prayer thread for Governor Bush is not about poll numbers, sound bites or tv spots. It's about the mighty political battle ahead with unknown, yet to be revealed elements. While we do our serious campaign work for Governor Bush, Attorney General Candidate Crist, Agricultural Incumbent Bronson and Katherine Harris, to name a few great candidates, please stop by here once in awhile to ping or bump this thread. If you have a special, unifying prayer you'd like to post here, feel free. I believe in the power of prayer. Above...
