Dear Friends, Last night the Senate announced an agreement on an economic stimulus bill that would cost anywhere between $780 billion and $1.1 trillion. Debate is scheduled to continue through the weekend with a vote to cut off debate on Monday. While proponents of the legislation claim it will stimulate the nation's economy, I firmly believe it does not do enough to confront the problems causing America's economic downturn. As a result, I will vote against cutting off debate on Monday. This legislation is yet another example of Congress throwing money at the symptoms but not getting to the root...

Federal immigration officials flagged for deportation 915 foreign-born inmates at the Gwinnett County jail during a 26-day surge that ended on Thursday. Of the inmates identified as being in the country illegally, 489 had a previous criminal history, said Gwinnett County Sheriff Butch Conway. Officials from the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Department and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced the results during a joint press conference Thursday at the conclusion of a targeted enforcement effort that began Jan. 12.

-ATLANTA- Should someone call you this month asking your plans for evacuation on a gargantuan scale, don't fret - it's not an end-times conspiracy theorist. It's just the Atlanta Regional Commission. Starting this week, 10,000 random phone calls from the ARC will blanket the metro area, including Gwinnett, in an attempt to gather data on how residents might best be evacuated, if the need should ever arise. Gwinnett County’s new solid waste management ordinance puts teeth into it. The ordinance provides for a civil fine of $500 for violations, which includes those who fail to “source separate residential recovered materials.” Gwinnett County Commission Chairman Charles Bannister said the move is in line with a state policy that local governments develop plans to reduce solid waste by 25 percent. “We don’t intend for this to be the garbage gestapo, running around, looking in people’s garbage about what’s there and what’s not there,” said Connie Wiggins, executive director of Gwinnett Clean and Beautiful, which is administering Gwinnett’s waste disposal...
