Johannesburg (CNN)South Africa will issue a diplomatic protest to the United States Monday over US President Donald Trump's "shithole countries" comments, according to its foreign ministry. During an Oval Office meeting on immigration Thursday, Trump expressed frustration with people coming to the United States from countries in Africa and elsewhere, sources told CNN. Trump on Friday denied describing certain nations in such vulgar terms, tweeting: "The language used by me at the DACA meeting was tough, but this was not the language used." He also defended himself Sunday night, telling reporters he is "not a racist."

You may love chocolate, but you should probably start preparing yourself to say goodbye to it: Scientists at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration have predicted that cacao plants are likely to go extinct as early as 2050 due to climate change. But there’s one glimmer hope on the horizon: Mars—the candy company which makes such chocolate treats as the Snickers and the Twix bar—has teamed up with the University of California on a new method that may help save future cacao crops.

A "belligerent" and "uncooperative" Connecticut woman tried to snort cocaine inside a police station Monday while she was waiting to be searched by a female officer, according to a police report. Officers with the Ledyard Police Department said they arrested Nicole Hunter, 25, on Monday following an unrelated incident. The report said police had been looking for a black Kia SUV with New Hampshire license plates following reports of an erratic driver. They found the car in Hunter’s driveway, with her still sitting inside of it, the report said.
  • Two Layers of Graphene Make Diamond-Hard Armor That Can Stop a Bullet

IAMOND-HARD ARMOR The media tends to depict bullet-proof armor as something that’s thick and heavier than regular clothes. Despite being for bodily protection, the added bulk of that armor might restrict a person’s movements. But scientists at the City University of New York’s Advanced Science Research Center (ASRC) have found that diamond-hard armor doesn’t need to be thick. The key to less-bulky protection is graphene, a tightly-packed layer of bonded carbon atoms one million times thinner than a piece of paper. The researchers discovered that two layers of graphene stacked on top of one another can temporarily become as hard...

War with North Korea can be avoided if the Trump administration uses sanctions modeled after President Barack Obama's much-excoriated Iran deal and if everyone just avoids "irresponsible" war predictions that risk "millions of lives," Ohio's Republican Governor John Kasich wrote on Monday. Kasich—who battled Donald Trump for the Republican presidential nomination last year—outlined a plan for stronger U.S. sanctions against North Korea in an opinion column in The Washington Post published Monday evening. He slammed Republican Senator Lindsay Graham of South Carolina and other politicians for "predicting odds on the probability of war" against North Korea when there is still...

My old home computer died outright sometime mid-December. I use it for some fairly intensive gaming (Fallout 4, (actually all the Fallout installments), Total War: Rome 2 (which required an upgrade to a Nividia GeForce GTX 970 video card) and personal computer-development efforts in Visual Studio 2014 and SQL Server 2012. The computer was bought new from MicroCenter in late 2013. So I went on Amazon, and a Refurbished Dell caught my eye. Here are the specs: Processor: Intel Core 7th Generation i7-7700 Processor (Quad Core, up to 4.20 GHz, 8MB Cache, 65W) 16GB 2400MHz DDR4 | Dell Wireless 1707...

Facebook just released a feature that reportedly shows if you were duped by Russian trolls accused of spreading propaganda and discord during the 2016 presidential election. The new tool is available through its Help Center. As many as 150 million Facebook users have interacted with content from the “Internet Research Agency,” an alleged Russian organization that bought ads and created posts about social and political issues between 2015 and 2017, according to Facebook. About 3,000 of the ads are now evidence in federal investigations on Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.

Despite Roy Moore’s shocking loss to Doug Jones in the Alabama special election for its vacated U.S. Senate seat, one of the Republican’s chief backers, Steve Bannon is pressing on. A former executive for Donald Trump’s presidential campaign turned White House chief strategist, Bannon returned to his post at Breitbartafter the president fired him in August. Since then, the eccentric conservative figure has floated plenty of praise and criticism for his former employer, the remaining members of his White House administration, and just about everyone else on the American political spectrum. According to Vanity Fair‘s Gabriel Sherman, Bannon is also...

Speaking to USA TODAY, Johnson, 45, fleshed out some of the still-murky details, acknowledging there's still a lot to be worked out. But Johnson says he would eye the 2020 presidential election. "That would probably be the case, yes," he says. But "this actually never came from me," the actor points out. "It started (with) a piece in The Washington Post, and there was this kind of groundswell." It didn't hurt that the report made clear in the headline that Johnson "could actually win." People got excited about the prospect. And that has pushed Johnson.

Five months before North Korea's first nuclear test in 2006, U.S. intelligence officials sent a report to Congress warning that secret work also was underway on a biological weapon. The communist regime, which had long ago acquired the pathogens that cause smallpox and anthrax, had assembled teams of scientists but seemed to be lacking in certain technical skills, the report said. "Pyongyang's resources presently include a rudimentary biotechnology infrastructure," the report by the director of national intelligence explained. A decade later, the technical hurdles appear to be falling away. North Korea is moving steadily to acquire the essential machinery that...

Franken's support among his fellow Democrats is collapsing as a host of female Democratic senators called upon him to quit. Sens. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., Patty Murray, D-Wash., Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., Mazie Hirono, D-Hawaii, Kamala Harris, D-Calif., and Maggie Hassan, D-N.H., all called on Franken to step down.

A week after NBC fired Matt Lauer, the ousted anchor is still reeling. “He is weak and broken and ashamed by his own admission,” one of Lauer’s former Today show colleagues tells PEOPLE in this week’s issue. “He is my friend,” the colleague adds. “He is human, and he is flawed. But is he going to use his power to be a predator on women? Until I see solid evidence of that, I just can’t believe it. We don’t know the details.” Lauer, 59, was terminated after the network received a “detailed complaint from a colleague about inappropriate sexual behavior,”...

PBS has a plan for replacing Charlie Rose's late-night interview program, and it starts with Christiane Amanpour. "Amanpour," the acclaimed journalist's existing program on CNN International, will be aired by PBS stations "on an interim basis," the public broadcasting network said Monday. The network said it is also "finalizing plans for a second public affairs program to follow 'Amanpour' on PBS in the 11:30pm half hour time slot, rounding out the hour."
