I was shocked that my pastor said nothing. It is a fairly conservative church in a very liberal, wealthy town full of influential people - many of them having some power to shape public discourse - not that those are necessarily church-goers. But I expected prayers for peace, for the safety of leaders and candidates, for us as a nation to handle disagreements with reason, fairness, gentleness.

Italian authorities are investigating the horrifying killing of a 16-year-old Iraqi girl allegedly raped and choked to death by a fellow migrant as their boat sank 120 miles off the coast of southern Italy. Two brothers from Nigeria pleaded guilty Wednesday in connection with an international sextortion ring, in which they threatened to release a nude photo of a 17-year-old Michigan boy, driving him to commit suicide inside his home. A few months ago I asked for prayer for my brother in a similar situation and tonight I ask for my friend J., that there is no return of cancer. Please pray for my brother. He's had cancer in the past, and has had recent symptoms and tests leading to more tests. He's waiting on the results, very worried. He is the single parent of a young child who will never be able to live independently. Caring for him is exhausting and draining my brother, and they doesn't live close to family who can help.
