Grim surveillance footage captured the moment a handcuffed Connecticut man broke his neck in the back of a police van after the driver braked suddenly, causing him to smash his head. Randy Cox, 36, was left paralyzed from the waist down when he was being taken to a police station in New Haven to be processed on a weapons charge on June 19, his family said. The driver of the van, Officer Oscar Diaz, said he was forced to brake hard in order to avoid a collision, police said. Diaz continued driving to the station — despite an injured Cox...

In November of 2019, CBS 2 interviewed Anjanette Young for the first time. A social worker and active in her church, Young had a jarring and traumatic story to tell: she told us her safest place – her home – was invaded that February. We quickly learned she was the latest victim in a pattern of wrong raids by the Chicago Police Department, uncovered by our team as part of its two-year series. But the story was different than others we reported in the past. Young said during the wrong raid, police entered the home and handcuffed her, all while...

The chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee warned a small group of well-connected constituents three weeks ago to prepare for dire economic and societal effects of the coronavirus, according to a secret recording obtained by NPR. The remarks from U.S. Sen. Richard Burr were more stark than any he had delivered in more public forums. On Feb. 27, when the United States had 15 confirmed cases of COVID-19, President Trump was tamping down fears and suggesting that the virus could be seasonal. "It's going to disappear. One day, it's like a miracle. It will disappear," the president said then, before...

Grace Fusco — mother of 11, grandmother of 27 — would sit in the same pew at church each Sunday, surrounded by nearly a dozen members of her sprawling Italian-American family. Sunday dinners drew an even larger crowd to her home in central New Jersey. Now, her close-knit clan is united anew by unspeakable grief: Mrs. Fusco, 73, died on Wednesday night after contracting the coronavirus — hours after her son died from the virus and five days after her daughter’s death, a relative said. Four other children who contracted coronavirus remain hospitalized, three of them in critical condition, the...

Thomas was “face-planting” on the floor because he was hypothermic, Assistant District Attorney Laura Newcombe said, citing audio recordings taken from an extensive home-security system in the house. In the recording, a child can be heard asking why Thomas cannot walk. “Because he’s hypothermic,” Pollina replied, according to Newcombe. “When you wash with cold water and it’s freezing out you become hypothermic.” Later, Pollina put the same question to Valva. “Do you know why he’s falling?” Pollina asked Valva about Thomas, Newcombe said, citing recordings. "Because he’s cold. Boo f–king hoo,” Valva callously responded, according to the prosecutor. When Pollina...

Body camera footage of SC shooting contradicts police claims By JEFFREY COLLINS COLUMBIA, S.C. SHANGHAI—Long derided as a casino, China’s once-volatile stock market is going through a long stretch of calm. One reason is an orchestrated government effort to keep traders and investors in line. Three years after a national uproar when Chinese stocks plunged by nearly half in just over two months, traders and brokers say regulators are increasingly stepping in to influence trades and make China’s markets appear less volatile, especially during political events when Beijing wants to project stability.
