Aviation has rebounded from the economic crisis and the proof is in the US$ 47bn of orders signed at last week's biannual Farnborough International Airshow. While the 2008 Farnborough air show held before the start of the global economic recession saw a total of $89 billion worth of deals signed, aviation and aerospace executives were pleased with the resounding rebound. Of the total sales at the 2010 show over 20% - about US$ 10bn were inked by Russian companies and the biggest smiles were around the Sukhoi stand as its Civil Aircraft division proved the international appeal of the Sukhoi...

Suborbital, private joyrides will cost $200,000 a ticket A private spaceship built to launch space tourists on suborbital joyrides could by flying on its own by this fall, Space.com has learned. The SpaceShipTwo spacecraft VSS Enterprise, which the space tourism company Virgin Galactic has been flying on test flights attached to a huge mothership, could make its first drop flights over California's Mojave Desert for glide and landing tests. "There's a reasonable possibility that we could see the first drop flight in the fall, but as always, everything is predicated on thoroughness and safety," Virgin Galactic's commercial director Stephen Attenborough...

It's hard to imagine the pre-Craigslist days. Can you even remember how you sold a slightly used bicycle or a stroller or a car? Nowadays you have some options when it comes to selling your old treasures online and if you haven't tried Adbirds yet, you need to give the site a test-drive. Adbirds is similar to Craigslist, but I'd say it's more safe, sophisticated and mommy-friendly. Sure, if you sell on Craigslist, you get in front of a lot of eyes instantly, but sometimes it's too many. Let’s say I’m trying to sell a baby stroller. By the time...

LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) -- The marriage took place at one of the Nigerian capital's most recognizable landmarks, under the golden dome of the National Mosque in front of an audience of the elite. But the recent wedding of one of the Muslim leaders who brought Shariah law to Africa's most populous nation is under scrutiny as human rights groups say he married a 13-year-old Egyptian girl.

Boeing took one of its new 787 Dreamliners to Florida for cold weather tests. In an environment designed to mimic January conditions in Fairbanks, Boeing is seeing how all parts of the plane respond to a cold soak at 45 below. When the engineers work inside the giant freezer at Eglin Air Force Base, pens don’t work, so they have to use pencils. On a spring day in Florida, the parka-clad workers look as if they could be outdoors in Fairbanks on a cold winter day. There is a touch of ice fog in the air that builds up as...

ALMATY, Kazakhstan — Authorities in Uzbekistan have restricted the country's doctors from freely traveling abroad to international medical conferences, a think tank in the Central Asian nation said. Limiting Uzbek doctors' exposure to foreign expertise is likely to further hinder the authoritarian country's troubled health care system, which has struggled to deal with outbreaks of HIV and tuberculosis. The Expert Working Group, an independent think tank in the Uzbek capital of Tashkent, said Friday that a recently approved government decree had created strict requirements for medical personnel wishing to leave the country, even if only for personal reasons. Sukhrobjon Ismoilov,...

Debra Medina of Beeville, Texas, is a former Wharton County Republican chair and a Republican candidate for governor in 2010. A dark horse in the race, she persistently polled in the single digits behind the better-known, better-funded Gov. Rick Perry and U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison. According to the Houston Chronicle, Medina has her roots in the libertarian side of the Republican party. She has campaigned in the past for U.S. Rep. Ron Paul, R-Clute, and she has some of his other supporters working in her campaign. Despite being viewed as out of the mainstream, Medina's political potential in the...

The fight over global warming science is about to cross the Atlantic with a U.S. researcher poised to sue NASA, demanding release of the same kind of climate data that has landed a leading British center in hot water over charges it skewed its data. Chris Horner, a senior fellow at the Competitive Enterprise Institute, said NASA has refused for two years to provide information under the Freedom of Information Act that would show how the agency has shaped its climate data and would explain why the agency has repeatedly had to correct its data going as far back as...

Disagreements over security measures have reportedly led to a scuffle between Turkish Prime Minister and US President Barack Obama’s bodyguards. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan arrived in the US on Wednesday to attend the United Nations General Assembly and the G20 summit. According to “Cumhuriyet”, a Turkish daily newspaper, despite long talks, security services of the two heads of states failed to come to any agreement over organizing Erdoğan’s security. Apparently, having ran out of words, Obama’s bodyguards and their Turkish colleagues turned to close combat. Recep Erdoğan tried to intervene, but was manhandled by one of Obama’s bodyguards and kicked out...

Thanks to your quick action in contacting Congress, the House Financial Services Committee earlier today rejected Representative Mel Watt's attempt to hijack Audit the Fed by voting 43-26 to pass Ron Paul's amendment to the financial regulatory reform bill. Dr. Paul called me right after the vote to personally express his thanks to C4L members for all of your efforts! It is an incredible testament to the growing power of the liberty movement that we were able to get such an audit passed by a major House committee, but this is by no means the end of our fight. Financial...

FLINT, Mich. - Authorities say ads on Craigslist from women looking for "fun" have led to prostitution charges against seven mid-Michigan residents. Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton announced charges Thursday against the six women and one man arrested over the summer. He says they face a variety of felonies and misdemeanors, but all are charged with prostitution -- punishable by up to five years in prison and a $500 fine. Leyton and Sheriff Robert Pickell say that in most cases, the women quoted fees for sex as soon as police posing as customers called phone numbers on Craigslist. A 33-year-old...

One of the worst ideas we have heard recently regarding Afghanistan is to bring in the Russians. NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen suggested that 20 years after the Soviet Union's defeat there, Moscow now might hold the key to victory. "Russia could provide equipment for the Afghan security forces," Mr. Rasmussen said. "Russia could provide training. We could explore in a joint effort how we could further Russian engagement." A moment of clarity is in order.

Keep flying, keep control is 'the No. 1 priority,' Buchanan Dam pilot says. The engine rumbled ominously and the plane unexpectedly started to shake. As Alan Crawford flew through low-hanging clouds on his way from Fort Worth to his hometown of Buchanan Dam on Saturday, he knew he was going to crash. When Crawford realized the plane was not producing enough thrust to keep him airborne, he said he pulled out of the clouds and shut down his engine to avoid a post-crash fire. In 40 years of flying, he said, he had had an engine fail only once. Crawford,...

From RT on YouTube: A new EU report may finally answers the question as to which country started the Russo-Georgian war in August 2008. The European Union conducted a nine-month investigation into the issue and has concluded that it was Georgia, more specifically Saakashvili, who triggered the conflict. So why was the U.S. Government, along with the mainstream media, so intent on blaming Russia for the war? And what will these new revelations mean for Georgian relations with the United States and Europe? RT's Dina Gusovsky talks to Tsotne Bakuria, former member of the Georgian Parliament.

White House National Security Adviser James L. Jones says President Obama's decision to abandon a long-range missile defense site in Eastern Europe was driven by U.S. intelligence concerns that Iran is further along than previously thought in developing medium-range missiles that could strike Western Europe and the Middle East with nuclear warheads. "We think they are heading toward weaponiz[ing] these missiles, which obviously we want to dissuade them from doing," the retired four-star Marine general told The Washington Times, explaining why U.S. officials dramatically shifted from years of focus on guarding against longer-range intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs). Gen. Jones also...
