Yes, and it was the beginning of the end for the regular folks, people who couldn’t understand the complexities of government, but did understand that moral degradation was normal for powerful men….It took little time for the degradation to trickle down to all citizens….soon it was okay for all, even for schoolchildren. The Clintons have a lot to answer for. The evil they both exposed and perpetrated infected anll aspects of human life. We are bearing their legacy today in all aspects of human life.
If the original agreement was that she surrender the goat at a specific time and place, she would have to honor her agreement. But as you mention, she could then have attended the auction and bid for the purchase of the goat. Yes I think you are correct that telling others why she wanted the goat would probably have resulted in folks refusing to bid for it and her bid would have won the day. This is so obvious an answer that I assume there are many more extenuating details not mentioned in the story as to why the simplest, most humane outcome didn’t prevail....

Young men were brutally castrated and their lives as slaves were measured in months, hence repeated raids to Hungary and most European countries for more slaves. The girls and young women were forced to become harem slaves to Islamic strongmen, and lived and died with the harem walls. The half a millennia-long history of kidnap of Hungarians and their subsequent slavery and deaths in the Arabian peninsula may be why the Hungarians booed the English kneelers.
