  • Being productive after dark

    11/06/2023 4:41:10 PM PST · by chrisser · 35 replies
Have a lot of stuff I need to do around the house and in the garage. I was already struggling with it getting dark early, but the time change has made it worse. I have to be up around 7:30am for work. It's dark now by 6pm and I seem to be significantly affected by that these days (in my mid-50s). I potentially have six hours every evening after work before I have to hit the sack where I could get a lot done, but as soon as it gets dark, I'm zonked. I end up puttering in front of...

Let's say I wanted to build a small web site to try and make a small stab against wokeness. In the past, I'd have probably registered a domain with Godaddy, and then either rented some hosting space or thrown up my own server. In a rural area and it's hard enough to get a reliable DSL - and I need to stay on the good side of my ISP since I use it for work. So short of renting some commercial space in town and trying to get a business internet connection, it looks like I'd have to use a...

  • Vanity: Non-electronic (off grid) gas range

    10/24/2019 8:26:05 AM PDT · by chrisser · 54 replies
We're looking for a new 30" range for the kitchen. Needs to run on propane. While we are on-grid, we're looking for ranges made for off-grid for the simplicity and reliability. We're in a rural area and sometimes the road is inaccessible. Our last stove spent the last 18 months not working more often than working. Two "safety" valves, a control board, a temperature sensor, three glow ignitors. Was under warranty, but we couldn't get anyone to come down the road and look at it. So we're looking for either pilot lights or battery-powered spark ignition. The former isn't manufactured...
  • Advice on opening a Facebook account

I've managed to live without Facebook and Twitter. However, we're in a rural area and apparently Facebook Marketplace is the place to go for local classifieds for buying/selling and for offering/finding services. I need someone to haul some scrap metal off our property and have hit a brick wall trying to find someone through my small network of contacts (I'm at a new job at month 4). So I'm reluctantly considering opening a Facebook account, if only because the site's popups make it virtually unusable without one. I've also noticed a lot of local businesses don't have web sites in...

Hello fellow FReepers. Don't post much these days but I lurk a lot. Haven't seen a thread on this topic - if I've missed it, then a link would be appreciated and/or I'll ask the mods to delete this. Like many of you, I'm a big fan of the President and all he's accomplished. I hope his second term is even better. Having hope for the (near) future is a pleasant change from previous administrations. Sadly, Trump is just one man, and he has formidable and powerful forces stacked against him. I have no doubt he will continue to surprise...
  • Vanity: Gas range that isn't a piece of junk

    12/04/2018 6:10:00 PM PST · by chrisser · 128 replies
Let me preface this by saying we live in a very rural area. Most of the year, our road and sometimes our driveway are impassable without 4wd and high traction tires. We also have no cell service. So getting a repair service out here or warranty work is basically not practical. We bought this Maytag gas oven. We run it on propane. Bought it less than a year ago from Lowes and it's been nothing but problems. I've spent more in parts for it to get it working than what we originally paid for the oven (something like $350-400) and...

CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) - On Tuesday around 3 p.m., protesters filled Public Square in response to the recent killing of 12-year-old Cleveland boy Tamir Rice and the lack of an indictment in Ferguson, MO. The growing crowd then walked onto the shoreway, blocking traffic between West 3rd and East 9th Streets. The group is chanting "Hands up! Don't shoot!" They also chanted "No justice! No peace!" and "Whose streets? Our streets!"Chief of Police Calvin Williams is on the scene with multiple units responding. "People need to remain calm and be peaceful," said Williams. Protesters have a united front, encouraging others...

  • Technical Hiring Managers - resume advice

    08/30/2014 10:33:11 AM PDT · by chrisser · 92 replies
Hoping to get some advice from FReepers who are hiring managers for tech positions - specifically system/network admins. I've been in the field for almost 25 years. Been consistently employed with a consistently rising salary. Now mid 40s and currently employed. But I would like to relocate to another city where we own property. I don't know anyone there other than our neighbors who are either retired, farmers, or both. The area I'm looking at is Parkersburg WV. Not exactly a mecca of tech positions, but a few pop up occasionally on the job boards. I've been sending out resumes...

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Capping off a months-long lobbying effort, Cleveland will be the host of the 2016 Republican National Convention. Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus announced Cleveland as the location on the Fox News Channel in a live, on-air interview. The interview was immediately preceded by a tweet, which has since been deleted, from a spokesman for the Republican Governors Association. "We're excited about bringing the convention to Cleveland in Ohio, and we're excited about the decision. We think it's a smart decision," Priebus said. Cleveland edged out Dallas, the other finalist, as the recommended location for the convention,...

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Long-missing Amanda Berry and Gina DeJesus have been found alive, a police source confirms. WOIO Channel 19 had reported that a woman claiming to be Berry called police Monday afternoon and told a dispatcher that she was in a house on Seymour Avenue on the city's West Side. The woman said DeJesus was with her. "We've confirmed it's them," a detective said. "They are alive and safe." Berry, now 27, and DeJesus, 23, were taken to MetroHealth Medical Center. The FBI and police will interview the women when they are discharged, the detective said. Police arrested the...

My wife and I were at my parents for Thanksgiving, along with my sister. During dinner conversation, we discovered my sister was an enthusiastic Obama supporter. Unfortunately, the conversation ended up in a long political argument. My parents refused to say how they voted, but it was pretty obvious they're drinking the Koolaide too, along with my brother, who wasn't there. As you can imagine, I've been thinking a lot about this since. There's more than a little bit of regret I have from the conversation, but beyond that, I think it was the first time I've actually come face...

Hey all. I'm not much of a writer, but this little essay has been brewing in my brain since the election, and I finally wrote it down just to get my mind off it. It's a first draft, perhaps an only draft. I don't really have any plans for it, but I thought some might be interested. Criticism, whether factual, grammatical, stylistic or other are welcomed. It's a little long. Right now, it's just some personal therapy I'm sharing with my FRiends... The dirty little secret of American politics. Suppose you had a million dollars in assets. Would you be...
  • Vanity: Should I move funds in my 401(k) before the election?

    11/05/2012 9:19:41 AM PST · by chrisser · 11 replies
So I have a modest nest egg in my 401(k). It's in growth stocks, and I've had almost 13% rate of return this year. I've pretty much made up all I lost in the last big crash. I'm concerned that if Obama is reelected, or if the election is undecided for weeks or months, that the market may tank. If the former, the downturn would likely be somewhat permanent. I can transfer funds between investment types with no fees and do it online. If I did it today, I believe the funds would be transferred by tomorrow. Was thinking of...

HIRAM, Ohio - Hiram College issued a mandatory evacuation of its campus Friday evening, according to the school’s website . At about 5 p.m., students received a campus alert that stated the college had received a bomb threat. “We are taking this seriously, have notified local & federal authorities. Several other campuses received similar threats. Please remain aware of suspicious activities,” the alert said. Hiram College said it would update hiram.edu every 30 minutes with new information. Also on Friday, the University of Texas and the North Dakota State University were evacuated after bomb threats were phoned in within minutes...
  • Vanity: Corrigan vs Kucinich - Ohio 10th district

I'm in Kucinich's district. Peter Corrigan is running against our beloved lawn gnome. Haven't read much about this race anywhere. Corrigan hasn't put any ads on TV that I've seen. http://www.corriganforcongress.com/ Looks like he's a decent candidate. I can't help but think that with some financial help, Corrigan might be able to kick out the kook. Last I read, Corrigan was 14 points down, but with the environment this year, maybe we could give Dennis the boot. If you're looking for candidates outside your district to support, might be worth throwing a few bucks Corrigan's way. Plenty of ammo to...
  • Police looking for good Samaritans in Sherman Oaks crash

Although police typically find themselves scanning witness videos for bad guys, on Monday they put out an alert for a couple of heroes. Officers hope to find the good Samaritans who were captured on amateur video as they rescued a 69-year-old man from a burning car after a collision Sunday in Sherman Oaks. The duo was joined by another man armed with a fire extinguisher and a fourth who used a crowbar to try and break the car's windows. "It could have been much worse if it wasn't for them," said Officer Jose Garcia of the LAPD's Valley Traffic Division....
