Israeli researchers raised a glass Wednesday to celebrate a long-brewing project of making beer and mead using yeasts extracted from ancient clay vessels —some over 5,000 years old. Archaeologists and microbiologists from the Israel Antiquities Authority and four Israeli universities teamed up to study yeast colonies found in microscopic pores in pottery fragments. The shards were found at Egyptian, Philistine and Judean archaeological sites in Israel spanning from 3,000 BC to the 4th century BC. The scientists are touting the brews made from "resurrected" yeasts as an important step in experimental archaeology, a field that seeks to reconstruct the past...

Belgian monks have revived a medieval beer recipe last brewed in the 18th century. The Order of Canons Regular of Premontre at Grimbergen Abbey in Belgium have begun brewing the ale again after rediscovering the original 12th-century recipe and methods in their archives. But be careful if you get to try the new ancient brew - at 10.8 per cent alcohol content it's likely to blow your cassock off.

For every case of rainbow bottles sold, the beer company will donate $1 to the organization, “up to $150,000 to assist in their efforts of creating a world where everyone can live the life they love.”

It’s been a little while since we checked in on New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand’s presidential campaign, probably because she’s been stuck in the trenches and polling in the vicinity of zero. But she’s still out there beating the bushes and trying to round up votes and campaign contributions. One of her latest campaign gimmicks involved getting out there with the regular people and playing some beer pong. No… seriously. This is a thing that actually happened. (Associated Press) Her first shot landed short and her teammate’s bounced away. But Kirsten Gillibrand’s second ping pong ball splashed home and she...

The prices of beer and drinks containing beer rose by 3.5 percent across the board in 2018, well above the official consumer inflation rate. That’s according to data released by the Federal Statistical Office on Thursday. Pilsners, lagers and dark beers were hit the hardest, with a price increase of 3.8 percent. Meanwhile, beer-based mixed drinks, like shandies with added lemonade or cola, saw a price increase of 3.6 percent, while the cost of alcohol-free beers rose 2.7 percent, reflecting their growing popularity. The price of wheat beer and Altbier rose by only 1.8 percent over the same period. Germany...

A thousand years ago, the Wari empire stretched across Peru. At its height, it covered an area the size of the Eastern seaboard of the US from New York City to Jacksonville. It lasted for 500 years, from 600 to 1100 AD, before eventually giving rise to the Inca. That's a long time for an empire to remain intact, and archaeologists are studying remnants of the Wari culture to see what kept it ticking. A new study found an important factor that might have helped: a steady supply of beer... Nearly twenty years ago, Williams, Nash, and their team discovered...

Remember Del Hall...the guy who gave up food for Lent and chose to adopt a beer-only diet? Ringing a bell now? Well, we're back with an update because his boozey mission is done and he didn't crumble once - and he's 44 pounds lighter for it. Del, who works at Fifty West Brewing Company in Cincinnati, Ohio, has drank exclusively from an assortment of beers for 46 days - a plan which was inspired by the fasting rituals of 18th century Bavarian monks...

How long have humans brewed beer? Patrick McGovern, the world's foremost historian of ancient brews, hints in Ancient Brews (2017) that this activity has been around possibly at least for 11,000 years based on vessels from Gobekli Tepe in Anatolia (Turkey). How sophisticated was brewing in antiquity? Since the ancient artifact ca. 100 CE known as the "Baghdad Battery" was discovered in the 1930's, the purpose for which it was used has been a mystery. Wilhelm Koenig, a German curator of the Baghdad Museum, discovered it near Ctesiphon - the Sassanid capital and previously in the Parthian Empire around 1936...

On April 7, 1933, President Franklin Roosevelt took the first step toward ending Prohibition and signed a law that allowed people to brew and sell beer, in the United States, as long as it remained below 4.0% alcohol by volume (ABV). Beer drinkers celebrated and were happy to be able to purchase beer again for the first time in thirteen years. National Beer Day is observed annually on April 7th. Celebrate with a pint of pale ale, lager, stout, wheat beer or pale ale...

Nothing pairs better with baseball—and its wild and weird stadium foods—than an ice-cold beer. But gone are the days of light lagers and limited choices. Major League Baseball’s ballparks offer an extensive list of draft and packaged beers, from big-brand standbys to hyper-local breweries and ballpark-only brews. Beer prices are wide-ranging, too, from a $5 can of Bud Light at a Twins game to $19.25 for a 22 oz. premium draft beer at Oracle Park. Some ballparks—including the White Sox, who will serve 77 different beers on Opening Day—have beer menus akin to that of a specialty beer bar.

The fact that America’s Oldest Brewery is family owned and operated is important to me as I value family over everything. I love cracking open a cold Yuengling whether it’s a day fishing...

MillerCoors is suing Anheuser-Busch InBev for its controversial Bud Light Super Bowl ad. The lawsuit is the latest retaliation from MillerCoors for the ad that shamed Miller Lite and Coors Light for using corn syrup during its brewing process. MillerCoors is seeking an immediate halt to the campaign, which it claims is false advertising. =============================================================== MillerCoors filed a lawsuit Thursday against Anheuser-Busch InBev, claiming that its rival’s Bud Light ad shown during the Super Bowl is false advertising meant to deceive customers and misuses the Miller and Coors trademarks. The company is seeking an injunction to stop Bud Light from...

Set to be released next week, “When There are Nine” is a Belgian Brut IPA dedicated to the judge. The beer’s name is inspired by her answer to the question “When will there be enough women on the Supreme Court?” “We wanted to name it Brut Bader Ginsburg,” an event description by Samuel Adams reads. “But our legal team, uh, dissented.”

There are many angles to the news of the City of Milwaukee getting the Democratic National Convention next year in the Brew City - such as the fact that it may be the most important event in the city's history. This beer-related angle is not one of the most important, but it may be the most appropriate: That the contract is blessed in beer. During the official announcement of the Milwaukee 2020 Democratic convention, the parties involved signed an official agreement to host it next July 13-16. What landed on the contract? Beer, apparently a slight amount spilled by Lieutenant...

NEWTOWN, Ohio (WKRC) — The season of Lent means Christians are fasting and giving up certain pleasures or vices. One Ohio man is taking a page from history. For 46 days, Del Hall is drinking only beer. “I’m going to have all styles of beer,” the Fifty West worker said about the fast. Beer will be the only thing on Hall’s menu and he won’t have solid food until Easter Sunday. Hall says he’s taking a nod from monks in the 1600’s that would fast during the season by a bock beer diet. “Being master brewers, they decided they would...

We all know that alcoholic drinks are not a health food – and alcohol itself is linked to cancer. But, these new findings are just further evidence that this hazardous weed killer is ending up in almost everything that we eat and drink. How much weed killer are we each eating every day? Breaking new tests conducted by the consumer interest group U.S. PIRG finds that many popular beer and wine brands are contaminated with – glyphosate (the main ingredient in Roundup).
