A 2016 report from the Baltimore Sun showed 344 homicides for the year 2015. A homicides counter maintained by the Sun shows 318 for 2016, 342 for 2017, and 309 for 2018. BALTIMORE (WJZ) — USA Today has named Baltimore the most dangerous city in the country. The paper analyzed police crime data in the nation’s 50 biggest cities, which revealed Baltimore had the highest per capita murder rate in the nation with nearly 56 murders per 100,000 people — a record for the city. The sharp spike in homicides and shootings in Baltimore City since the unrest sparked by Freddie Gray's death in police custody last year has left police and prosecutors scrambling to contain the violence. Many of the people involved in such crimes are well known to police, who are frustrated by their inability to bring them to justice or secure convictions carrying lengthy prison terms. Why is it so hard for the authorities to get such people off the streets — and keep them off?

Three major cities accounted for more than half of the rise in the national murder rate between 2014 and 2015, a new report shows. Though overall crime rates were stagnant in America’s 30 largest cities the murder rate rose 13.3 percent, according to a report from the Brennan Center for Justice. The violent crime rate also rose by 3.1% in those major cities, lead by increases in Los Angeles, Baltimore, and Charlotte.
