Friends of former NBA Commissioner David Stern are urging him to run for mayor in 2017, now that Mayor de Blasio is looking less likely to be re-elected to a second term. Stern, a lifelong Democrat who has regularly contributed to the party, will be retired for two years in February. “He’s pretty bored,” said one source. “He’s always been interested in politics, and he’s always been interested in running for office.”

Kenny “The Snake” Stabler, who led the Oakland Raiders to a Super Bowl title in 1977, died Thursday at the age of 69. Stabler led Alabama to an 11-0 record in 1966 before turning pro. From 1968-75, the Oakland Raiders played in six AFL/AFC title games and lost each one of them to the eventual Super Bowl champion.

San Antonio Spurs forward Tim Duncan says he lost about $25 million in investments to a dishonest adviser, but is not a factor in deciding if he will return for a 19th NBA season. Earlier this year, Duncan sued Charles Banks, his former financial adviser, seeking more than $1 million in damages after Duncan says that Banks took Duncan's $7.5 million investment in his company, Gameday Entertainment LLC, and used it for his personal benefit.

The WNBA has suspended All-Stars Brittney Griner and Glory Johnson for seven games each after their domestic violence arrests in April, per Associated Press. The two were arrested on suspicion of assault after a fight in the home they recently purchased. They were married last week in Phoenix. WNBA President Laurel J. Former Chicago Bear Doug Buffone, the all-time leader in games played for the organization, has died in his Chicago home at the age of 70, police said. Paramedics were called to his home in the 1200 block of West Lexington Street around 1:30 p.m. Monday, according to police and fire officials. He was dead on the scene, they said.

Lauren Hill spent her final year polishing a layup and inspiring others to live fully. She succeeded at both as she fought an inoperable brain tumor. The 19-year-old freshman basketball player at Mount St. Joseph University died at a hospital Friday morning, the co-founder of her nonprofit foundation told The Associated Press.
