WASHINGTON -- The victors got more of the spoils Tuesday when the Angels were welcomed to the White House by President Bush as the 2002 World Series champions. A caravan of two charter buses escorted by police officers took the Angels and staff to Washington, D.C., from their Baltimore hotel for a reception in the Rose Garden that was attended by guests of the President, quite a few of whom were bedecked in Angels caps. The players and staff, looking sharp in their finest suits, amassed around the podium and awaited the arrival of the president, who strode to the...

By Jeffrey Goldfarb NEW YORK (Reuters) - Disney has reached a tentative deal to sell its Anaheim Angels baseball team for about $180 million to a Mexican-American billboard magnate who aims to attract more Latinos to watch the defending World Series champs, people close to the situation said on Tuesday. Arturo "Arte" Moreno, with a net worth approximating $940 million, must await approval from Major League Baseball and its owners before closing any deal with Walt Disney Co. . Disney declined to comment. Baseball officials and Moreno could not immediately be reached. Moreno's bid appears to have edged out separate...

NEW YORK (CBS.MW) -- AOL Time Warner, the world's largest media and Internet company, may sell its three sports franchises to bolster its financial position, its chief executive officer said. AOL spokeswoman Tricia Primrose confirmed Monday that CEO Richard Parsons had told securities analysts Friday the company is searching for ways to strengthen its balance sheet, and offered up the sports teams "as an example of a non-core asset." However, Primrose stressed that "no discussions" are under way for such a sale. AOL, whose stock has fallen 63 percent in the past year, is under pressure to boost revenue and...

Filed at 9:42 p.m. ET LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - On the day the Anaheim Angels clinched a playoff berth for the first time in 16 years, the Walt Disney Co. hired an investment bank to market the baseball team and the Mighty Ducks hockey franchise to potential buyers. Disney has long discussed selling the two sports teams to a buyer who would keep them in Anaheim but the entertainment giant's announcement on Thursday that it had retained Lehman Brothers marked a firm step toward that goal. ``Lehman is the investment broker that is looking for a buyer as of this...

The Polo Grounds: A Calm Review of Baseball Sunday, September 22, 2002Cursebusters, Inc.? by Jeff Kallman Plans can change. Sometimes, maybe they should. Saturday in Seattle, they certainly should have. Not very nice, Seattle Mariners. The visiting Anaheim Angels were in town Saturday, needing one game to clinch a postseason spot. Who comes out to throw out the ceremonial first pitch? An assassin from yesteryear: Dave Henderson, Boston Red Sox, Class of '86. Talk about the hand that held the dagger thrusting it into the back of the sons who are not supposed to be visited with the sins of...

Wrestling With The Angels by Jeff Kallman The original Angels In The Outfield, circa 1952, predated the Anaheim Angels franchise by a decade. And that time, it was an orphanage moppet bringing in the divine comedians to get the mojo working for her hapless Pittsburgh Pirates. Stealing a cute film's remade premise (as in, the Danny Glover hit of a few years ago) would not be the grandest theft with which the Angels were ever involved. For that matter, their theft of Nolan Ryan from the New York Mets may not be the grandest theft they have ever gotten away...
