Last September, a white police officer shot and killed an unarmed black man in his own apartment. That much is settled. But nearly every other aspect Amber Guyger's murder trial for the killing of Botham Jean remains cloaked in controversy as opening statements in the case are set to start Monday. For some, the shooting was a tragic accident with circumstances that can only be described as "very unique." Others place it in pattern of white officers killing black men that, they say, points to systemic problems in American policing.

A white police officer in Dallas told a police dispatcher that she shot her unarmed black neighbor in his own home, repeating 19 times on a 911 call that she mistakenly “thought it was my apartment.” Amber Guyger, who is facing a murder charge in the September shooting of Botham Jean, is heard asking a dispatcher for police assistance and paramedics on the nearly six-minute recording, which was obtained late Monday by WFAA. “I’m an off-duty officer, I thought I was in my apartment,” Guyger, 30, frantically told the dispatcher. “And I shot a guy thinking that he was, thinking...

Amber Guyger’s killing of Botham Shem Jean is an unspeakable tragedy. It also highlights the need for officers like Guyger to face impartial justice. It is hard to think of a more tragic, more senseless shooting in America than the killing last week of Botham Shem Jean, a young black risk-assurance associate at PricewaterhouseCoopers, and a member of Dallas West Church of Christ. This is what we know so far. Jean was home alone in his apartment in the South Side Flats complexin Dallas when police officer Amber Guyger entered and shot him dead. The precise chain of events is...

The white Dallas cop who fatally shot her black neighbor after confusing his apartment for her own told investigators that he ignored her “verbal commands” and all she could see was a “large silhouette” — so she opened fire. Amber Guyger had just entered the fourth floor residence, which was dark, and thought she was being burglarized, according to her arrest affidavit. The 30-year-old claimed during police interviews that the front door was slightly ajar, so when she went to use her key it pushed open on its own. Upon entering, Guyger said she saw the “large silhouette” — which...

A Dallas police officer who fatally shot her neighbor in his apartment, claiming she mistook the unit for her own, told the authorities that the door was already ajar when she entered and that she shot him after he ignored verbal commands, according to court records released on Monday. The officer, Amber R. Guyger, 30, who has been charged with manslaughter, could face additional charges in a case that has led to accusations that the officer received preferential treatment and debate about whether race may have played a role in the deadly encounter between a white police officer and a black...

A 30-year old off-duty Dallas police officer has been arrested and charged with manslaughter in the shooting death of 26-year-old Botham Shem Jean on Thursday night. Guyger’s Bond was set at $300,000 and she posted bail less than an hour after being arrested, jail records stated. Moments earlier on Sunday, Jean’s family attorney Lee Merritt met with Dallas County District Attorney Faith Johnson presenting new evidence and demanding that Guyger be taken into custody.

The officer who killed a man in his apartment Thursday after she apparently mistook it for her own home also shot a suspect during an arrest in 2017. Officer Amber Guyger has not been officially named in connection with the shooting, but a source within the Dallas Police Department has identified her. Guyger, who has been with the department almost five years, was not indicted in the 2017 shooting of the suspect who had taken her Taser from her during a struggle. She is expected to face a manslaughter charge for killing 26-year-old Botham Jean on Thursday, but a warrant...
