A large cargo ship with a fire in its hold is being kept 2 miles (3.22 kilometers) offshore of an Alaska port as a precaution while efforts are undertaken to extinguish the flames, the U.S. Coast Guard said Saturday. A massive landslide took out three homes on a highway outside of Wrangell late Monday. A massive 7.2 magnitude earthquake has increased the risk of a volcano in Alaska erupting imminently as the aviation level was raised to red. The Shishaldin Volcano has been spewing great plumes of ash into the air since July 11, according to the Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO). A US Coast Guard overflight confirmed lava erupted the same day within the summit crater. Jim Tweto, 68, died June 16 in a small plane crash near the town of Shatoolik, Alaska. Entertainment Weekly reports that Jim was seen taking off in his Cessna 180 on Friday morning, and it purportedly crashed soon after.
