There was plenty to marvel at during the New York City Pride March on Sunday, but one precocious 8-year-old boy stood out from the crowd: Desmond Napoles, of Brooklyn, who joyously strutted and vogued his way down Fifth Avenue in a rainbow tutu and gold sequined cap. And when critics reared their heads on social media Monday, suggesting his participation was inappropriate, mom Wendylou Napoles shut them down with grace and pride. “If you are offended, don’t look,” Napoles wrote, in part, in a lengthy post on the Facebook page of LGBT website NewNowNext. That’s where a photo of...

"Black Teacher Hits Handicapped White Child, Tells Him Black People Fought To Not “Serve White People Like You”" Excerpted from The Social Memo: A Cincinnati teacher has resigned in the wake of racist comments and abusive actions taken toward handicapped children. Intervention Specialist Pamela Bullock has left her position at Wayne Local Schools in Warren County, after four teaching assistants wrote a letter to administrators detailing her abuse toward students. In one incident, the assistants reported that Ms. Bullock was taking care of a handicapped, non-verbal student, when she became irate at him. Bullock threw a marker at the boy,...

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- The child protection agency in Hennepin County has been ignoring reports of child abuse to ease its caseload and control its budget, according to a national child welfare group. The group, Casey Family Programs, studied the county's system for months and presented the findings of a report released last week to the Hennepin County board on Thursday. Casey Family Programs director Dee Wilson also told the board that child protection workers commonly screened out abuse reports, which means families weren't visited and services weren't offered, the Star Tribune ( http://strib.mn/1IhwPjh ) reported. Additionally, neglect cases are looked...

A Ramsey County deputy is on administrative leave after he was charged with hitting his canine partner, the Carlton County Sheriff's Office said. The charges are from an incident that happened early June 15 at the Black Bear Casino in Carlton. The sheriff's office says 48-year-old Brett Arthur Berry is charged with assaulting a public safety dog and animal cruelty, both misdemeanors. Berry has been a Ramsey County deputy since 1996. Black Bear security told deputies they had been called into the Cobalt Lounge to ask a man to leave. Security followed him with video and saw him return to...

Writing to Slate, a concerned reader asked for advice when it came to an "unusual request" that his wife had to face. The reader explained what can only be described as a form of abuse: the reader's wife is a ballet instructor. Two parents recently came to her and requested that their 10-year-old son, named Dan in the letter, be given private dancing lessons. Dan identifies as a boy. However, his parents told the ballet instructor to address him as "Danielle" and that he would be dressed in a pink tutu. Dan's parents further told the instructor that this was...

The federal government cannot verify nearly $3 billion in subsidies distributed through Obamacare, putting significant taxpayer funding “at risk,” according to a new audit report. The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of Inspector General (OIG) released an audit Tuesday finding that the agency did not have an internal system to ensure that subsidies went to the right enrollees, or in the correct amounts. “[The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services] CMS’s internal controls did not effectively ensure the accuracy of nearly $2.8 billion in aggregate financial assistance payments made to insurance companies under the Affordable Care Act...

The archbishop of the Twin Cities and a deputy bishop have resigned after prosecutors charged the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis with having failed to protect children from unspeakable harm from a pedophile priest. The Vatican said Monday that Pope Francis accepted the resignations of Archbishop John Nienstedt and Auxiliary Bishop Lee Anthony Piche. They resigned under the code of canon law that allows bishops to resign before they retire because of illness or some other "grave" reason that makes them unfit for office. Earlier this month, Ramsey County prosecutors charged the archdiocese as a corporation with having "turned...

Charges have been filed against the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis, which is accused of failing to protect children, Ramsey County Attorney John Choi announced Friday. Choi said the charges are in relation to three victims of former priest Curtis Wehmeyer. Six charges have been filed, all of which are gross misdemeanors. They include three counts of Contributing to Need for Protection or Services and three counts of Contributing to Status as Juvenile Petty Offender or Delinquency. Because the charges are against a corporation rather than individuals, Choi said no one is looking at jail time; if convicted, the...

Before Officer Michael Griffin was indicted on federal charges for using excessive force and lying under oath, he cost the city of Minneapolis $411,864.78. That same year, a federal jury in a civil trial ruled the city must pay Jeremy Axel, Michael Mitchell and their attorneys $271,864.78. Griffin allegedly kicked Mitchell in the chest and punched Axel in the back of the head, knocking him unconscious outside a club...

"THEY CAME WITH A BATTERING RAM.” Cindy Archer, one of the lead architects of Wisconsin’s Act 10 — also called the “Wisconsin Budget Repair Bill,” it limited public-employee benefits and altered collective-bargaining rules for public-employee unions — was jolted awake by yelling, loud pounding at the door, and her dogs’ frantic barking. The entire house — the windows and walls — was shaking. She looked outside to see up to a dozen police officers, yelling to open the door. They were carrying a battering ram. She wasn’t dressed, but she started to run toward the door, her body in full...

Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) issues these plates to police departments for officers in unmarked cars involved in sensitive investigations such as narcotics, organized crime or terrorism. Confidential tags cannot be traced back to any specific person or organization if a criminal has a source run the plates through conventional databases. But all three police sources also expressed bewilderment about why the Edmonston Police Department would need any confidential tags. Each pointed out that Edmonston is a very small town, and that any major narcotics, terrorism or organized crime investigation would be outsourced... The Town denies any allegation that this...

Many people are living longer, but not to age 112 or beyond -- except in the records of the Social Security Administration. The SSA's inspector general has identified 6.5 million number-holders age 112 -- or older -- for whom no death date has been entered in the main electronic file, called Numident. The audit, dated March 4, 2015, concluded that SSA lacks the controls necessary to annote death information on the records of number-holders who exceed "maximum reasonable life expectancies." "We obtained Numident data that identified approximately 6.5 million numberholders born before June 16, 1901 who did not have a...
