Deputies in this corner of western Oregon outside ultraliberal Portland used to track down criminals the old-fashioned way, faxing caught-on-camera images of a suspect around the office in hope that someone might recognize the face. Then, in late 2017, the Washington County Sheriff's Office became the first law enforcement agency in the country known to use Amazon's artificial-intelligence tool Rekognition, transforming this thicket of forests and suburbs into a public testing ground for a new wave of experimental police surveillance techniques. Almost overnight, deputies saw their investigative powers supercharged, allowing them to scan for matches of a suspect's face across...

The Motion Picture Association of America, the film industry’s board of review, today recommended the re-examination of the British made film ”Oliver Twist” with a view to having deletions and changes made which would remove objections to the firm voiced by many Jewish and other groups, the Jewish Telegraphic Agency learned today. (snip) In [the USA] the Anti-Defamation League of B’nai B’rith and other Jewish groups protested the scheduled showing of the film on the grounds that one of its central characters, Fagin, was portrayed in an anti-Semitic manner and would inspire anti-Jewish sentiment. In the British zone of Germany...

Lonely millennials, you are not alone! A new survey found that over half of Americans between the ages of 18 and 34 do not have a romantic partner. In spite of the recent rise of dating apps, more young people than ever remain single, according to data released by the General Social Survey from researchers at the University of Chicago.

‘Nineteen Eighty-Four’ Appendix THE PRINCIPLES OF NEWSPEAK Newspeak was the official language of Oceania and had been devised to meet the ideological needs of Ingsoc, or English Socialism…It was expected that Newspeak would have finally superseded Oldspeak (or Standard English, as we should call it) by about the year 2050. Meanwhile it gained ground steadily, all Party members tending to use Newspeak words and grammatical constructions more and more in their everyday speech. The version in use in 1984, and embodied in the Ninth and Tenth Editions of the Newspeak Dictionary, was a provisional one, and contained many superfluous...

In what book does Orwell talk about college professors with patches "on their jacket elbows", who claim to "be for the working man" yet in reality they hold themselves to be of a higher class status than the mere working man?

This week, the sorest loser since DickensÂ’ Miss Havisham in Great Expectations, Hillary Clinton, began peddling her latest book What Happened. (No question mark at the end because itÂ’s didactic, not really an inquiry. She knows the answer and sheÂ’s going to instruct us out of her infinite wisdom and years-long expertise, including two such losses.) On Twitter, the actor James Wood offers a visual of the reasons she proffers, feigning regret that he was not included. James Woodsâ€Verified account @RealJamesWoods Sep 12 Damn! Didn't make the cut... 7:39 PM - 12 Sep 2017 If you think Woods was exaggerating,...

Bizarre misreading: @HillaryClinton thinks the lesson of Orwell's 1984 is that you should trust experts, leaders and the press

Vince Foster was a mentor to Hillary when they worked together at the Rose Law Firm in Little Rock, Arkansas. When Bill was confirmed as the 42nd President of the United States on January 20, 1993, Foster took a role as his Deputy White House Counsel. 6 months later, to the day, Foster was found dead in Fort Marcy Park, along the Potomac River, of an apparent "suicide" resulting from a gun shot from a .38 caliber revolver. Like a lot of things surrounding the Clintons, Foster's "suicide" has always been shrouded in mystery. A few months ago, The...

Hillary edits sexual assault pledge after allegations against Bill resurface By Daniel Halper The Clinton campaign has removed a pledge from its website stating that all survivors of sexual assault “have the right to be believed.” On a page dedicated to “Campus sexual assault” on HillaryClinton.com, this passage from the Democratic presidential candidate used to be prominently featured last year: “I want to send a message to every survivor of sexual assault: Don’t let anyone silence your voice. You have the right to be heard. You have the right to be believed, and we’re with you.” But by February of...

On Wednesday, Democratic presidential candidate Hilllary Clinton expressed concern over new undercover videos showing Planned Parenthood doctors haggling over the price of aborted baby parts. “I have seen pictures from them and obviously find them disturbing," Clinton said in an interview with The New Hampshire Union Leader. But just 24-hours later, Clinton has changed course, saying last night that she proudly stands by and supports the abortion giant. @HillaryClinton Proud to stand w/Planned Parenthood & for access to quality, affordable healthcare for women, men & young people. -H https://twitter.com/mayaharris_/status/626909449538539520 … According to the Washington Free Beacon, the daughter of Planned...

In the last CNN Democratic debate held in Nevada, Barack Obama and John Edwards began the evening by attacking Hillary Clinton but soon retreated. Within several minutes, Hillary waved her magic wand, transformed the meaning of a few words—and her pitiful opponents cowered in her presence. Bill Clinton has taught his wife the tricks of the trade. Indeed, he is an expert at semantics—as he revealed under oath when he infamously declared “it depends what is is.” His wife now follows the same pattern: When a politician is in trouble, pull a Foucault; that is, start playing word games. And...

The copyright holder of George Orwell's classic novel 1984 may sue over the video that used Apple's 23-year-old Macintosh advertisement to jab at Senator Hillary Clinton, a lawyer for Rosenblum Productions said Wednesday. "We're not filing [a lawsuit] at this point; we're monitoring the situation," said William Coulson, who represents Rosenblum Productions. "But we certainly reserve the right to do so in the future." Coulson did not specify whom Rosenblum might sue -- the video's creator, YouTube or both. The 74-second video, a mashup that substitutes the droning Big Brother of the original Apple television ad with images and words...

Book: Hillary Used 'Etiquette Squads' to Bust Up Protests A former advance man for New York Sen. Hillary Clinton has confessed that her campaign used "etiquette squads" to drive hecklers away at rallies, raising new questions about a March 2000 incident where several reporters were assaulted while trying to cover then-candidate Clinton as crowds booed her during the St. Patrick's Day parade. Patrick Halley's new book, "On the Road with Hillary," is a largely favorable portrait of the White House hopeful, seen through the eyes of the man whose job from 1992 to 2000 was to make sure Mrs. Clinton...

One minute YouTube video features a motion video mix of Steve Buscemi and Jennifer Lawrence. His face is grafted onto Jennifer Lawrence's head. His facial expressions almost perfectly mix with the speech of Jenn Lawrence. It all works with her dynamic facial turns as she made an Hollywood award-related speech in the video. While the quality of this amateur work product is very high, Freepers will probably consider a similar GoldenShower product made against a political enemy by a government with an unlimited budget. Further development of this tech is inevitable and a politically-minded public should adjust its mindset...

The president of FamilyTreeDNA, one of the country’s largest at-home genetic testing companies, has apologized to its users for failing to disclose that it was sharing DNA data with federal investigators working to solve violent crimes. In the booming business of consumer DNA testing and genealogy, FamilyTreeDNA had marketed itself as a leader of consumer privacy and a fierce protector of user data, refusing, unlike some of its competitors, to sell information to third parties. But unbeknown to its users, the Houston-based firm quietly and voluntarily agreed in 2018 to open its database of more than two million records to...

The Valparaiso Police Department said Thursday night that the incident started when a boy, 13, who is not being named, told Apple's virtual assistant: 'I am going to shoot up a school.' Siri then...

It is always instructive to find out what governments are up to when the populace is distracted. It is also disturbing to see how the state will attempt to sneak seemingly benign dollops of tyranny into its governance like a shrewd mother slipping vegetables into the children’s dinner. After all, how are diligent citizens supposed to keep an eye on their leaders when the establishment media’s theater and pageantry constantly distract them? … government software that would block pornographic content. As the American public fixated on Black Hebrew Israelite racists, an alleged Native American valor thief, and a smiling teenager...

As the back cover of my cheap paperback copy of George Orwell’s masterpiece dictates… 1984 has come and gone, but George Orwell’s prophetic, nightmarish vision in 1949 of the world we were becoming is timelier than ever. 1984 is still the great modern classic of Negative Utopia. I recently revisited this book after many years of absence, and while reading along I highlighted many quotes and passages which struck me as relevant to the “social justice” zeitgeist of the late 2010’s. To little surprise, I discovered that what the political left seeks in this day and age is well and...

Facebook has promised more transparency about ads on its platform, but the majority of users are still in the dark about the kind of information that’s been collected on them. That’s according to a study released Wednesday by the Pew Research Center, a Washington, DC-based think tank. The vast majority of users surveyed (74 percent) said they were not aware that Facebook lists their interests for advertisers and that these interests can be found in the “ad preferences” page on user profiles. Those preferences run the gamut from pop culture, consumer purchases and “likes” to “multicultural affinity” and political labels....
