In 2016, Hillary Clinton ran for president proposing $1 trillion in tax increases. Would President Trump’s blue-collar boom ever have gotten off the ground with such a back-breaking tax burden? But now, four years later, former vice president Joe Biden thinks he has a better idea. In his third run for the White House, Biden is proposing tax increases of nearly $4 trillion over the next 10 years. If he wins in November and these increases were to pass, they’d be the highest in American history - indeed, in world history. President Trump’s 2017 tax reform cut taxes for corporations,...

[Catholic Caucus] Bishop ‘sidelines’ pro-life, pro-family priest Father Joseph Klee of the Diocese of Columbus, Ohio, has been “sidelined” for an indefinite period of time by his bishop, Robert J. Brennan. I’ve featured the staunchly pro-life, pro-family priest-activist in four of my past columns: here, here, here and here. In 2017, Klee was hit by a car driven by an angry abortion supporter during a pro-life demonstration. Klee has also contributed articles to Homiletic and Pastoral Review. The following statement was released by the diocese on June 22, 2020: The Catholic Church proposes a beautiful, life-giving and liberating vision to...

Frustrated with COVID-19 restrictions on daily life, a friend said to me, “I just want to know the truth.” Like many people, my exasperated friend, and others I know, are mesmerized and frightened by daily news reports. ... The “clear guidance” politicians claim to dispense and “the truth” my friend wants to learn are not rooted in the principles of human flourishing. My friend is waiting for a government official to blow the all-clear whistle. My friend doesn’t want to believe experts are as fallible as he is, and that the prevailing scientific consensus may be false. ... In North...

Mississippi’s state House of Representative on Sunday passed a bill to remove the Confederate flag from the state flag, with the Senate expected to pass the measure later today. The lower chamber voted 91-23 to remove the symbol from the flag, which has flown since 1894. It was the nation’s last state flag containing the symbol. The legislation, written by House Speaker Philip Gunn (R), calls for the current flag to be immediately removed, after which a nine-person commission would be appointed to design a new one, Mississippi Today reported. Under the terms of the bill, the commission would recommend...

According to the FDA, there is a multi-state outbreak of Cyclospora infections potentially linked to salads containing those ingredients. Cyclospora is a microscopic parasite that can affect the intestinal tract and cause diarrhea. It is treated with antibiotics. As a result, Giant Eagle, Walmart and Aldi have issued recalls for several Fresh Express salad products. Customers should throw those products away immediately. The recalled products are clearly marked with the letter “Z” at the beginning of the Product Code, which is located on the upper right-hand corner of the front of the package. Those products containing iceberg lettuce, red cabbage...

Liz Cheney Twitter @Liz_Cheney If reporting about Russian bounties on US forces is true, the White House must explain: 1. Why weren’t the president or vice president briefed? Was the info in the PDB? 2. Who did know and when? 3. What has been done in response to protect our forces & hold Putin accountable?

A Maryland man who has helped organize 'reopen' protests against measures intended to slow the spread of the coronavirus says he has been sickened with COVID-19. Tim Walters, a co-founder of the ReOpen Maryland movement, announced this week on social media that he has tested positive. 'I was diagnosed yesterday at the ER with COVID-19 and here I am months after not wearing a mask at rallies, churches and so on and so it's funny how capricious this thing is,' he said in a Facebook video. Walters, a two-time Republican candidate for the state legislature, helped organize ReOpen Maryland protests...

Racial justice expert and National Basketball Association star LeBron James says "the National Football League owes former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick an apology and reparations for their suppression of his career. He was on his way to greatness, but was denied the opportunity to achieve it for political reasons." Kaepernick had some success in the league and led his team to the 2013 Super Bowl where they lost to the Baltimore Ravens 34-31. The following season, the team finished the regular season 12-4, but lost in the Conference championship game. After these two stellar seasons, Kaepernick signed a...

Three members of the Minneapolis City Council have been provided with a private security detail after receiving death threats for supporting proposals to defend the city’s police department in the wake of George Floyd’s killing. A city spokesperson said the private security details ordered for council members Andrea Jenkins, Phillipe Cunningham and Alondra Cano have cost taxpayers $63,000 over the past three weeks – a rate of $4,300 per day. News of the arrangement surfaced Friday, the same day the council voted 12-0 to abolish the Minneapolis Police Department, initiating steps toward establishing ‘peace officers’ and a new ‘holistic’ approach...

Orleans Natural Resources Manager Nathan Sears said two shark attacks on seals have already been documented in the past couple of weeks; one at Nauset Beach, the town’s big oceanside beach, and one a couple of miles south at the first exit on the southern off-road trail system. Cape Cod Ocean Community co-founder Heather Doyle said the pilot network — which uses volunteer pilots who routinely fly over Cape Cod beaches to radio shark reports to people below who have received free radios supplied by her group — is bigger this year with more participants and municipal lifeguards in various...

The whole story starts with a farmer. Specifically, the farmer at Jortveit farm in southern Norway. Around the beginning of the 1930s he decided to drain a wetland near the farm so he could cultivate new land. But while he was working on the deep drainage trenches, strange things started to crop up. Bones from a bluefin tuna and a killer whale. And huge fish hooks and harpoons made of bones. In the middle of the wetland! The tools eventually ended up in the University Museum of Antiquities in Oslo, where they were studied by archaeologists. The bones, on the...

In “Here is New York,” a 1949 love letter to his adopted home, author E.B. White declared it a miracle that the city managed to exist at all. “The whole thing is implausible,” he wrote. “Every time the residents brush their teeth, millions of gallons of water must be drawn from the Catskills and the hills of Westchester.”
