So, “scientists” marched today, demanding proper respect for science. What a crock. Who isn’t appreciative of science and what it adds to the quality of our life? Who isn’t grateful that diseases that used to be a death sentence are now easily and routinely treated? Who isn’t grateful that an acre of soil yields more tons of yummy nutrients than ever in history? Who isn’t grateful that we have more available energy in reach under the soil than at any time before now? No, what some people disingenuously call a disregard for science is actually opposition to political agendas opportunistically...

Next Year we'll both cross 70&1/2 and I'll fully retire Too. We intend to trade-in or sell both our cars and become a 1 car couple. Brands that we'd consider [again] are Kia, Subaru,& Volvo. We aren't fans of what Detroit builds. There are brands we haven't owned; which should consider? We intend to stay in eastern Nebraska with it's hills and 4 Seasons; ergo an all wheel drive car. I, make that We, hate cars with "spare tire spaces" that only accept the tiny Toy Tire spares. Why own an SUV whose "spare" is "pavement ONLY"? Why must my...

France goes to the polls on Sunday for the first round of a bitterly fought presidential election, crucial to the future of Europe and a closely-watched test of voters' anger with the political establishment. Nearly 47 million voters will decide, under tight security, whether to back a pro-EU centrist newcomer, a scandal-ridden veteran conservative who wants to slash public spending, a far-left eurosceptic admirer of Fidel Castro or appoint France's first woman president, to shut borders and ditch the euro.

Japanese ships join U.S. carrier for drills as it nears Korean waters By Nobuhiro Kubo and Tim Kelly | TOKYO Two Japanese destroyers on Sunday began an exercise with the U.S. Carl Vinson carrier strike group in the Western Pacific as it approaches waters around the Korean peninsula, Japan's navy said. The two Japanese warships, the Samidare and Ashigara, left western Japan on Friday to join the Carl Vinson in a show of solidarity as the United States confronts North Korea over its ballistic missile program and nuclear tests. The destroyers will "practice a variety of tactics" with the U.S....

I am a Carl Sagan fan from way back. His 1980 TV miniseries “Cosmos” hit me at just the right age and inflamed a lifelong love of science. But we’ve had nearly 40 years to assess the long-term effects and see how Sagan unwittingly contributed to a trend that muddled public understanding of science. This weekend’s so-called “March for Science” is a perfect example of what went wrong. All you really need to know about the “March for Science” is that it is scheduled for Earth Day. The organizers may say the march is nonpartisan and has a variety of...

Another day, another students’ union ban. This time, student officers at the University of Sydney Union have shown their contempt for their peers by banning a documentary about the men’s rights movement. A screening of The Red Pill had been organised by the University of Sydney’s Conservative Club, Students For Liberty, and a student group called BroSoc, but the students’ union cancelled the event. According to its website, The Red Pill is a documentary about the ‘mysterious and polarising world of the men’s rights movement’. It chronicles ‘feminist filmmaker’ Cassie Jaye’s exploration of ‘an alternative perspective on gender equality, power...

The Lord was my stay. Truly in vain is salvation hoped for from the hills, and from the multitude of mountains: truly in the Lord our God is the Salvation of Israel. The Lord is my Rock, and my Fortress, and my Deliverer; my God, my Strength, in whom I will trust; my Buckler, and the Horn of my Salvation, and my High Tower. Cry out and shout, thou inhabitant of Zion; for great is the Holy One of Israel in the midst of thee. The angel of the Lord encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them....

Amar Salhi is still amazed at how his scruffy cafe bar north of Paris sparked an election scandal after it featured on national television in December during a report about Islam and women. In footage shot with hidden cameras and broadcast during prime-time by state media giant France 2, two women activists were seen facing a hostile welcome as they tried to go for a drink in the Jockey Club. “There’s no mixing in this bar,” one client was heard saying. “You’re not in Paris here… it’s a different mentality, it’s like the village back home (in north Africa),” said...

Last fall, just weeks before Election Day, I traveled the old Lincoln Highway, from the Appalachian Mountains to the Rockies, to learn the attitudes of voters who lived miles from the off-ramps of the main interstates and coastal America. Known as US 30, the mostly two-lane highway connects 13 states and 128 counties between Times Square and San Francisco. It was on that trip, especially in the Rust Belt states of Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana and Iowa, that a realization unfolded: Many had already decided they were not voting for Hillary Clinton. These voters appeared to defy polls and conventional wisdom....

THE Saudi Antibiotics Integrated Regulatory Program (SAIR) is an initiative launched by Mohammed Alaqil concerning the misuse and abuse of antibiotics and the issue of superbugs in Saudi Arabia. SAIR program has been working with several universities in the United States including Portland State University & Georgetown University. As a first plan, symposiums, seminars, and campaigns will be held and then it would be transmitted to the MENA region within the extended plan of SAIR for Middle East & North...

“It grows in dense thickets that block sunlight and out-compete native specialty plant species, many of which are listed as endangered,” said Jen Michelsen, the water district’s environmental programs manager. “However, removing mature French broom in the sandhills habitat is challenging because of its huge root systems.” The water district manages roughly 2,000 acres of land in the San Lorenzo Valley Watershed. Of that land, 180 acres is sandhills habitat within the Olympia Watershed — an area in the Zayante area northeast of Felton. The sandhills are basically the exposed remnants of an ancient seabed. In 1963, the fossil remains...

Those of you who embrace freedom, please help teach the next generation about communism’s horrors. Steer them toward “Communism at ‘Peace’: An Outline of Non-Wartime Communist Atrocities” ( communiststats.com ). Unique demographics are used (e.g., villagers, the religious, homosexuals, landowners, etc.) in a way that personalizes 85 million deaths.. torture.... imprisonments... QUICKLY making them real to even the least engaged adolescents (and as a teacher, I'm very familiar with un-engaged millennials). I've seen and heard these students flinch in repulsion. Your help promulgating this information--particularly to those students who are about to be preyed upon by their professors--would be appreciated...

“Easter Joy Continues!” (John 20:19-31; Acts 5:29-42; 1 Peter 1:3-9) Alleluia! Christ is risen! (He is risen indeed! Alleluia!) Yes, he is risen indeed! And guess what? He is still risen! Christ didn’t stop being risen once Easter Day was over. And so the Easter season continues--and with it, our Easter joy. It’s the Second Sunday “of” Easter! Thus our theme for this morning: “Easter Joy Continues!” The Easter joy was certainly evident last Sunday. Easter Day at St. Matthew’s was a day of great joy. As soon as the resurrection was announced at the start of the service, we...

Trailer movement seen at N. Korea's nuke test site: satellite photo SEOUL, April 22 (Yonhap) -- Some movement of what appear to be trailers have been detected at North Korea's nuclear test site in its northeastern mountainous area, a U.S. research monitoring website said Saturday. Commercial satellite imagery taken on April 19 showed signs of a few mining carts along the tracks leading to the spoil pile and a small equipment trailer near the North Portal, the tunnel that Pyongyang has apparently been preparing for a nuclear test in the Punggye-ri region, according to the 38 North website. The analysts...

Federal scientist cooked climate change books ahead of Obama presentation, whistle blower charges. Trump critics say they are concerned about the president’s proposed cutbacks for the Environmental Protection Agency and the National Institutes of Health, his administration’s skepticism about the cause of climate change and other science-related issues. However, organizers say the march was political but not partisan -- to in fact promote the understanding of science and defending it from attacks, including a proposed 20 percent cutback at the NIH. "It's not about the current administration,” said co-organizer and public health researcher Caroline Weinberg. “The truth is we...
