Europe just lost a big chunk of production from one of its most critical natural gas fields, and not for any of the usual reasons — technical problems, pipeline constraints, or terrorist disruptions. These cuts are due to earthquakes. The development came at the Groningen natgas field in the Netherlands. The largest producing field in Western Europe — and one of the world’s top 10 gas fields by size. Groningen’s massive size has been an issue lately though, with drawdown from the field having caused seismic events in the areas above and surrounding the field. Such concerns prompted the Dutch...

Parts of a mutilated body have washed up on the sands of Copacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro just meters from where beach volleyball athletes will compete in the upcoming Olympics. The discovery is the latest to unnerve the city as it grapples with rising crime, a recession and exhausted state finances at a time when it hoped to be celebrating the first Olympics ever held in South America. It was unclear Wednesday afternoon what conditions may have led to the mutilated body but a policeman standing guard by a security perimeter confirmed its existence to Reuters.

What if the craziest thing about the Brexit is that it never happens? In the wake of the U.K.’s historic, market-shaking vote, financial heavyweights, commenters and the stock market itself are sending a signal that maybe, possibly, there might be hope that Britain’s departure from the European Union will not happen. The vote, after all, wasn’t binding, and it will be up to the next British government to decide if the country formally withdraws from the E.U.

Death is a tragedy for mortal man, and yet with faith in eternity and anticipation of the embrace of our heavenly Father, death becomes radiant. We share today the news of the death of Sister Cecilia, a Carmelite of Santa Fe in Argentina, who suffered from lung cancer. She astonished those who surrounded her in her agony, [smiling as she approached her culmination.] The Carmel of Santa Fe announced the death of Sister Cecilia to their brothers and sisters and friends of the Carmel, with a brief but profound note. Dear brothers, sisters and friends: Jesus! Just a few lines...

Washington (AFP) - When allegations emerged that Facebook was skewing its trending news stories, many learned about it... on Facebook. That underscored the rapid shift in media -- not only is news moving from print to digital, but Facebook, Google and other tech platforms are increasingly becoming the main gateways for information. Technology and social media firms are increasingly playing a role in filtering and delivering news, often with automated feeds, algorithms and "bots" designed to determine the most relevant articles. That means the news industry is rapidly losing control of the news along with the revenue that goes with...

Phoenix Proposes Property Tax Increase Ignores money in the bank On Friday, the Phoenix City Council is poised to increase its property tax rate by 19% for Fiscal Year 2017 from the longstanding combined tax rate of $1.82 to $2.17. Phoenix argues the rate increase is necessary to fund the debt service on voter approved general obligation bonds. Those bonds are financed through annual property tax levies. In recent years the city has paid the annual debt service from a combination of property taxes and cash from excess property tax levies from the real estate boom in 2007 through 2009....

Nurses with convictions for crimes of violence, sexual offenses and drug thefts are able to evade detection in six states, which have far fewer protections in place than most states when it comes to licensing healthcare workers ... While candidates for jobs such as massage therapists or private investigators are required to submit a fingerprint for checks against state and FBI conviction records, the nurse licensing systems in Colorado, Wisconsin, New York, Vermont, Maine and Hawaii rely on self-disclosure and complaints. The porous process allows nurses disqualified from obtaining licensure in other states to obtain a license in one of...

Elizabeth Warren is not a citizen of the Cherokee Nation. Elizabeth Warren is not enrolled in the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. And Elizabeth Warren is not one of the United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee. Nor could she become one, even if she wanted to. Despite a nearly three week flap over her claim of "being Native American," the progressive consumer advocate has been unable to point to evidence of Native heritage except for a unsubstantiated thirdhand report that she might be 1/32 Cherokee. Even if it could be proven, it wouldn't qualify her to be a member of a...

In March of this year, Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto compared Donald Trump to Hitler and Mussolini. At the time, Peña Nieto said that Trump’s rhetoric was “the way that Mussolini arrived and the way Hitler arrived.” At a press conference today with President Obama and Canadian President Trudeau, Peña Nieto was asked if he stood by those remarks. Peña Nieto wordily replied that over decades, the world has made tremendous economic progress, but that “some” want to destroy what has been built. That is what Hitler and Mussolini did, said Peña Nieto. In concluding, Peña Nieto said “that was...

Missouri Senate Majority Floor Leader Mike Kehoe (R-Dist. 6) says he and his GOP colleagues are ready to override Governor Jay Nixon’s (D) veto of permitless carry legislation. Nixon vetoed the legislation, SB 656, on June 27, just over two weeks after defenseless Orlando, Florida, residents demonstrated the dangers unarmed citizens face when targeted by a determined armed attacker. According to The Kansas City Star, House Speaker Todd Richardson (R-Dist. 152) said the House will override the veto if an override attempt prevails in the Senate.

Ah! When you have a private jet and lots of money to golf anywhere in the country, the first place that would leap to mind would be Phoenix, AZ which has been in the news lately for its blazing heat wave. President Obama scolded “those of you who are buying gas-guzzlers” during remarks about clean energy at the North American leaders’ summit in Canada on Wednesday. Obama said he viewed the clean energy sector as an “enormous opportunity.” The United States, Canada, and Mexico made a pledge to use clean energy sources to generate half of their electric power by 2025. Chuckling, Obama warned that oil was a “finite resource.” “Oil is cheap right now, but it’s not going to be cheap,” Obama said. “I’ve said this before. Those of you who are buying gas-guzzlers, I’m telling you, because it is...

King Tut owned a dagger that was out of this world—literally. Researchers have recently published a study in the journal Meteoritics & Planetary Science that supports what has long been suspected: The ancient Egyptians were using meteoritic iron well before the spread of iron smelting technology. The recent study on King Tut’s dagger, led by researchers from Italy and Egypt, used X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectrometry to analyze the composition of the iron blade. Iron meteorites mostly contain iron and nickel, and the results of the XRF analysis on King Tut’s dagger confirm that the blade is mostly composed of iron...
