Europe just lost a big chunk of production from one of its most critical natural gas fields, and not for any of the usual reasons technical problems, pipeline constraints, or terrorist disruptions.
These cuts are due to earthquakes.
The development came at the Groningen natgas field in the Netherlands. The largest producing field in Western Europe and one of the worlds top 10 gas fields by size.
Groningens massive size has been an issue lately though, with drawdown from the field having caused seismic events in the areas above and surrounding the field.
Such concerns prompted the Dutch government to take action Friday. With the countrys Economics Minister Henk Kamp saying that regulators will reduce Groningens permitted output by 11.1 percent to 24 billion cubic meters per year (850 billion cubic feet), down from a previous allowance of 27 billion cubic meters.

Damn brits. They are ruining everything
It’s a win-win. European welfare states lose and the gas price goes up, helping our producers.
As with gas and oil production in this country; I see nothing in the story that mentions any proof that the gas field production is in fact causing earthquakes.
Be good for my area, we are pretty much all natural gas.
So it wasn’t because of earthquakes, the leftist bureaucracy used seismic activity as an excuse to shut down production.
For all I care, all leftists all over the world could shut down all gas/oil production in their areas for any reason. Good for them! It only helps us with our price.
Fracking?
Caused by NO fracking....
George Bush is a Brit?
If I had to make a guess, these quakes were on the order of 2.0 on the Richter scale.
The next time you hear of an earthquake in this country, you should be able to find it at:
http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/map/
It lists the depth (in km...1.57 km = mile).
Most fracked wells are 1-4 miles down. And usually the earthquakes are much deeper. Its right there in black and white...every single earthquake in the country...I don’t know why the earthquake claims go unchallenged.
