  • Washington Post: The Purpose of Gun Registration is Gun Confiscation

There was a recent domestic shooting in Maryland.  The presumed perpetrator was a federal law enforcement officer.  He is reported to have killed his estranged wife and two other people.   His wife had a protective order against him in March, and the Federal Protective Service, of which Mr. Tordil was a member, took his service firearm and seven other firearms. This was in Maryland, which requires handguns to be registered. From the washingtonpost.com: Sheriff’s deputies can’t be faulted for not knowing about that gun because, thanks to the national gun lobby and the cowardice of Congress, there is no...

Explanation: That's not lightning, and it did not strike between those mountains. The diagonal band is actually the central band of our Milky Way Galaxy, while the twin peaks are actually called the Spanish Peaks -- but located in Colorado, USA. Although each Spanish peak is composed of a slightly different type of rock, both are approximately 25 million years old. This serene yet spirited image composite was meticulously created by merging a series of images all taken from the same location on one night and early last month. In the first series of exposures, the background sky was built...

The hypocrisy of those who travel everywhere with heavily armed security and the perpetual protection of Secret Service agents, such as Chelsea and Hillary Clinton, yet see no need for the great unwashed to protect themselves, is not surprising. Of course, these elites deem themselves higher-value targets than the rest of us. All Americans are equal but some are more equal than others. That housewife in Dubuque whose home a rapist just broke into, well, she can just call 911, thank you.

  • Fear of Islam drives proposal to change Samoa's constitution

Samoa's council of churches has welcomed the prime minister's call to review the religious freedom provisions of the constitution. Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi recently said the country's supreme law may be changed to recognise Christian principles and teachings, not just in the preamble. However the Secretary General of the Samoa Council of Churches, Reverend Ma'auga Motu, said he would go a step further and ban the religion of Islam. He said even though most Samoans are Christian, Islam poses a future threat to the country. "We are not going too far, no," Reverend Motu said. "We are still wanting our own...

“Congress designated May as National Military Appreciation Month in 1999 to ensure the nation was given the opportunity to publicly demonstrate their appreciation for the sacrifices and successes made by our servicemembers - past and present. Each year the president makes a proclamation, reminding Americans of the important role the U.S. Armed Forces have played in the history and development of our country.”That is the official explanation of the purpose of May as National Military Appreciation Month. My question is, how many of you actually knew about this? And what exactly does Military Appreciation mean in America? Does it mean...

A butcher's sign that said eating his bacon reduced the chance of someone being a suicide bomber has raised a few eyebrows. A photo posted on social media showed a sign up in the window of Jeff Rapley's butchery, Rapley's Midtown Quality Meats, in Narooma on the NSW South Coast. 'Eating two strips of Rapley's award-winning bacon for breakfast reduces your chance of being a suicide bomber by 100 per cent,' the sign read.

A Safeway clerk who says he punched a man in self-defense has been suspended by the supermarket chain. Surveillance video obtained by KIRO 7 shows Anthony Johnson in a fight with a man he says pulled a knife on him. “I did what anybody else would do, I defended myself,” Johnson said. But Johnson says even though police agree he was acting in self-defense, Safeway has suspended him for the fight while they investigate the incident. “You know my manager was literally there,” Johnson said. “He was the one who told me there was a knife being drawn. Why should...
  • Conspiracy charge in Oregon standoff case can 'chill' political dissent, defense lawyer says

A federal conspiracy charge against 25 occupiers accused of stopping federal officers from doing their work at the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge is constitutionally vague and has the potential to "chill the most crucial First Amendment activity"-political dissent, defense lawyer Amy Baggio argued Monday. The charge provides a "sphere of protection" for federal employees, but it's so broadly worded that it could restrict free speech and assembly designed to criticize the federal government and how its employees exercise their duties, Baggio said. "This statute can chill, it can threatened not only First Amendment expression but the Second Amendment right to...

The head of security for TSA, Kelly Hoggan, has been removed from his position after a hearing about the agency's management, the House Oversight Committee says. In an email obtained from the TSA, Administrator Peter Neffenger announced a series of leadership changes on Monday. The position that Hoggan had held since 2013 will temporarily be taken by Darby LaJoye, who is currently deputy assistant administrator. The changes come as fliers complain about long, slow airport screening lines. That problem "has many parts," as NPR's Brian Naylor has reported: More people are traveling, and there are fewer screeners. The May 12...

The neofascist reaction, the force behind Trump, has come about because of the extreme disembeddedness of the economy from social relations. The neoliberal economy has become pure abstraction; as has the market, as has the state, there is no reality to any of these things the way we have classically understood them. Americans, like people everywhere rising up against neoliberal globalization (in Britain, for example, this takes the form of Brexit, or exit from the European Union), want a return of social relations, or embeddedness, to the economy.

This is the season of college Commencement speeches -- an art form that has seldom been memorable, but has increasingly become toxic in recent times. Two themes seem to dominate Commencement speeches. One is shameless self-advertising by people in government, or in related organizations supported by the taxpayers or donors, saying how nobler it is to be in "public service" than working in business or other "selfish" activities. In other words, the message is that it is morally superior to be in organizations consuming output produced by others than to be in organizations which produce that output. Moreover, being morally...

Many are the facts that the national media refuses to address. One such fact is that concerning the pattern of violence that’s emerged on the part of the supporters of self-declared “socialist,” Bernie Sanders. In addition to the fact that they conflict wildly with those held, traditionally, by Americans generally, socialists hold moral beliefs that demand the deployment of the overt coercion of others of those who don’t share those values.

  • EgyptAir 804 remains point to bomb: official

A senior Egyptian forensics official says human remains retrieved from the crash site of EgyptAir flight 804 suggest there was an explosion on board that may have brought down the aircraft. The official is part of the Egyptian investigative team and has personally examined the remains at a Cairo morgue. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he isn't authorised to release the information. He says all 80 pieces brought to Cairo so far are small and that 'there isn't even a whole body part, like an arm or a head'.
