Michigan has among the most debt per taxpayers in the nation, ranking ninth overall, according to the annual “Financial State of the States.” That’s actually a significant improvement from last year. The report is released by the Chicago-based group Truth in Accounting and measures the total assets and liabilities of the 50 states. The methodology of the report is unique because it includes analyzing unreported pension and retirement health care liabilities. Michigan has a taxpayer burden of $19,300 per person, which is down from an all-time high of $25,300 per person last year which ranked the state fifth. There are...

EL MONTE (CBSLA.com) — The Board of Directors voted to close a Boys and Girls Club in El Monte after a DEA indictment claims the club was a center where potential Mexican Mafia gang members openly held meetings and sold drugs. Chairs were empty Monday where children, under different circumstances, would have gone to socialize and play — in part to help keep them off the streets. “It should be filled with kids, it should be filled with kids today,” Executive Director Clay Hollopeter said. Hollopeter suggests that the indictment holds no weight, and that the closing of the club’s...

That would be a great plan if he wasn’t also making it ten times more expensive to be a US citizen. I’m not sure what comes next. A big concrete wall and barbed wire?Obama is making it easy to come and hard to leave. The only places that do that are prisons and bear traps. It doesn’t say anything good about the American Dream when the country encourages non-taxpayers to come and penalizes taxpayers who want to leave. Americans who are abandoning their citizenship in droves are due to be charged five times more to surrender their passport under government...

Experts say the geckos may have frozen to death after the heating system broke down, Russian news agencies report. They were sent into space as part of a study into the effect of weightlessness on their sex lives and development. "We can say with confidence that they died at least a week before the landing because their bodies were partly mummified," an official from Russia's Institute of Medical and Biological Problems told Itar-Tass news agency. The Russian space agency has not yet outlined the cause of death. But Interfax news agency, quoting an expert working on the mission, says preliminary...

Good for them. Surrendering to people who practice beheading religiously is ill advised. This whole mess is yet another of the innumerable reminders that international forces placed around Israel to absolutely nothing and surrender or run away at the first sign of trouble. That’s why the touted EU initiative to put international forces between Israel and Hamas is a stupid and destructive venture. The Philippine military said Monday that a UN peacekeeping commander in the Golan Heights should be investigated for allegedly asking Filipino troops to surrender to Syrian rebels who had attacked and surrounded their campGen. Gregorio Pio Catapang...

One couple knows all too well the pain suffered by the parents of James Foley, the American photojournalist executed on camera last month by the Islamic State. Billy and Karen Vaughn also lost their son Aaron Carson Vaughn in 2011, when the SEAL Team Six soldier's Chinook helicopter was shot down over Afghanistan. Now the couple are calling on President Barack Obama to step down, citing his reaction to the Foley video and 'lack of leadership' in confronting ISIS.

In remarks on the U.S. economy Monday, President Barack Obama said Congressional Republicans will eventually cave to public pressure to raise the federal minimum wage. Obama was speaking at the Laborfest festival hosted by the AFL-CIO in Milwaukee, Wis. “If I cared about these things, I’d also want more Democrats looking out for me,” he said. “I’m just saying. Because when the rest of the country is working to raise wages, but Republicans in Congress won’t, it ain’t right.” ADVERTISEMENT Noting the protests in recent months from fast food workers seeking higher wages, Obama said Republicans would open up to...

College starts today for students across the country. With tuition costs surging, we can't help but ask, "What are they thinking?"In a new note, the New York Fed's Jaison R. Abel and Richard Deitz write that, looked at one way, these young people are making a sound investment as it now takes fewer years than ever for graduates to recoup their investment. While you used to have to work nearly 25 years to earn back what you'd fronted for your degree, only about 10 years on average are now required. "Despite the challenges facing today’s college graduates, the value of a college...

(Reuters) - Nervously eyeing Russian naval maneuvers and military flights near their borders, the three ex-Soviet Baltic states fear they may emerge as the next geopolitical flashpoint after Ukraine in a confrontation that could test their cherished Western ties. With President Barack Obama heading to Estonia on Wednesday on a visit designed to underline U.S. solidarity with the Balts ahead of a NATO summit in Wales, the three tiny republics are renewing calls for troops on the ground and military help.

A Field Poll released on Tuesday showed President Barack Obama's approval rating had dropped to a record low in the staunchly blue state of California. This decline includes the state's most left-leaning cities, which Field's director described as a particularly bad sign for Obama. "These are constituencies that have been strong followers," Field Poll Director Mark DiCamillo said, according to the Sacramento Bee. The poll showed Obama's approval rating in California at 45%, down from a second-term high of 62% following his 2013 inauguration. It was also down 5% from the previous Field Poll, which was released in June, making...

A man who admitted killing a knife-wielding robber who took his son's iPhone has been jailed for six years. Derek Grant, 38, confronted Patrick Bradley after the 29-year-old had held up his son Jordan in Greenock on 30 August last year. During the confrontation, Bradley stabbed Grant in the eye, after which Grant then fatally stabbed him. Grant was originally charged with murder but pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of culpable homicide. At the High Court in Livingston judge Lord Boyd noted that Bradley "was a man of violence" and had "10 convictions for assault" prior to his death....

Late Monday night it was reported that former House Majority Leader Eric Cantor would take a job at investment bank Moelis. The news has already prompted the predictable eye-rolling about the "revolving door." And to the Tea Partiers who ousted Cantor in a primary earlier this year, the news that he is going to Wall Street is vindication that he was never a populist like them. But anyway, Moelis has put in a filing with the SEC, detailing his pay package (Via Erik Schatzker). From the filing:Group LP has agreed to pay Mr. Cantor an annual base salary of $400,000. Group LP has...

A photo depicting an American nuclear-powered submarine poking its periscope above the waves—within shooting distance of a British aircraft carrier during a war game—is a useful reminder of one of the most important truths of naval warfare. For every sailor who’s not in a submarine, submarines are real scary. Stealthy and heavily-armed, subs are by far the most powerful naval vessels in the world for full-scale warfare—and arguably the best way to sink those more obvious icons of naval power, aircraft carriers.

The US reportedly targeted Ahmed Abdi Godane in a military strike on Somalia overnight, but the Pentagon has kept a tight seal on the operation other than to acknowledge that one took place. Godane runs al-Shabaab, the Somalian radical Islamist terror network that took credit for the massacre in a Kenyan mall a year ago, and Godane is widely believed to have run that operation: Rear Adm. John Kirby, the Pentagon’s press secretary, said in a statement late Monday only that “we are assessing the results of the operation and will provide additional information as and when appropriate.†Godane...
