Tennessee Ernie Ford wasn’t the first to record ‘Sixteen Tons,’ but he made it his signature song in 1955, and the title track of an album released in 1960.Tennessee Ernie Ford wasn’t the first artist to record “Sixteen Tons,” but he made it his signature. The song, inspired by the travails of the real-life coal miners of Kentucky, was first recorded by one of his forerunners on the Capitol label, Merle Travis, in 1947. That popular version, of a song that bore Travis’ songwriting credit from then on, didn’t show up on the Billboard charts on the day, even...

Harris was referring to stories published this week by ProPublica reporting that two women, Amber Nicole Thurman, 28, and Candi Miller, 41, died in the state following the Dobbs decision after taking abortion pills, and suggesting that the abortion measure was to blame. Harris only spoke by name about Thurman, the single mother of a 6-year-old boy and an aspiring nursing student, who died of a sepsis infection following complications from taking abortion drugs in August 2022. “But you see,” Harris said in her speech Friday, “under the Trump abortion ban, her doctors faced up to a decade in prison...

The Georgia State Election Board passed a rule on Friday requiring precincts to hand-count ballots for the November election and ensure the tallies match the machine count before election certification. The board voted 3-2 to pass the rule, The Guardian reported. The hand count only applies to election night, not early voting. The board voted 4-1 to table a proposal on hand-counting during early voting after a board member was concerned about information leaking regarding election tallies before all results are counted. The Georgia Association of Voter Registration and Election Officials, a group of more than 500 Georgia officials and...

At splashy weddings, charity balls and all the right restaurants, she hobnobbed with San Francisco’s moneyed elite—and made lasting allies who backed her at every stage of her political career. SAN FRANCISCO—In the summer of 1999, in the monied Napa Valley north of here, a bejeweled bride rode sidesaddle on a speckled horse into what the press would label “the Bay Area’s version of an outdoor royal wedding.” The lavish nuptials of Vanessa Jarman and oil heir Billy Getty—replete with red carpet, hundreds of flickering votives, and “a fair amount of wine,” according to one deadpan attendee—featured a 168-person guest...

In November of 2020, a freak wave came out of the blue, lifting a lonesome buoy off the coast of British Columbia 17.6 meters high (58 feet). The four-story wall of water was finally confirmed in February 2022 as the most extreme rogue wave ever recorded at the time. Such an exceptional event is thought to occur only once every 1,300 years. And unless the buoy had been taken for a ride, we might never have known it even happened. For centuries, rogue waves were considered nothing but nautical folklore. It wasn't until 1995 that myth became fact. On the...

Light pollution a new Alzheimer’s risk factor.Nowadays, artificial lights ubiquitously illuminate our indoor and outdoor spaces. Artificial outdoor lights provide safety, convenience, and aesthetics, but excessive artificial light at night is called light pollution. Exposure to artificial outdoor light at night is associated with numerous detrimental health effects, including sleep disruption, obesity, depression, anxiety, memory dysfunction, atherosclerosis, and cancer, but little is known about the impact of light pollution on Alzheimer’s disease (AD). A new study led by University of Cambridge scientists evaluated the relationship between outdoor nighttime light exposure and AD prevalence in the United States. The scientists used...

Explanation: For northern hemisphere dwellers, September's Full Moon was the Harvest Moon. On September 17/18 the sunlit lunar nearside passed into shadow, just grazing Earth's umbra, the planet's dark, central shadow cone, in a partial lunar eclipse. Over the two and half hours before dawn a camera fixed to a tripod was used to record this series of exposures as the eclipsed Harvest Moon set behind Spiš Castle in the hazy morning sky over eastern Slovakia. Famed in festival, story, and song, Harvest Moon is just the traditional name of the full moon nearest the autumnal equinox. According to lore...

These scandals have been increasing in the leaderships of Evangelical Churches lately. A Texas pastor known for his fiery preaching and frequent appearances alongside John MacArthur has been removed from ministry after an alleged "inappropriate relationship" with an unidentified woman. Steve Lawson, the 73-year-old lead preacher at Trinity Bible Church of Dallas and president of OnePassion Ministries, informed the church's elders about the relationship, according to a statement released by the church. "The elders have met with Steve and will continue to come alongside him and pray for him with the ultimate goal of his personal repentance," the statement reads....

When a pregnant woman had her blood sampled back in 1972, doctors discovered it was mysteriously missing a surface molecule found on all other known red blood cells at the time. After 50 years, this strange molecular absence finally led researchers from the UK and Israel to describe a new blood group system in humans. "It represents a huge achievement, and the culmination of a long team effort, to finally establish this new blood group system and be able to offer the best care to rare, but important, patients," UK National Health Service hematologist Louise Tilley says, after nearly 20...

In her first solo and unscripted interview since succeeding Joe Biden atop the Democratic Party, Vice President Kamala Harris touted the Biden administration’s decision to pause the delivery of certain munitions to Israel as the country continues its 11-month war with Hamas in Gaza. Speaking at the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) conference in Philadelphia on Tuesday, Harris pointed to the suspension of 2,000-pound bombs as a key move by the White House to push Israel toward a ceasefire. “One of the things that we’ve done that I’m entirely supportive of is the pause that we put on the...

[Catholic Caucus] Left-wing nun downplays evil of abortion during virtual ‘Catholics for Harris’ eventSister Simone Campbell made light of the Church’s teachings while backing the Democrat candidate, saying 'Our Catholic faith doesn't require the outlaw of abortion … it’s about protecting life at all stages. We must trust people's conscience' while apparently equating issues like housing and immigration with killing a pre-born child. Dissident Catholics, including heterodox Sister Simone Campbell, made light of the Church’s teachings on the evil of abortion during the inaugural “Catholics for Harris” virtual meeting this week in order to cast Kamala Harris, who has avoided...

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - Former Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy hosted a town hall Thursday in Springfield, Ohio, a city that's been thrust into the 2024 race, calling for an open conversation on the migrant debate dividing the country."We've been told, mostly by the media, to shut up, sit down, do as you're told, to sweep it under the rug, or else you're guilty of some sin," Ramaswamy began the town hall Thursday evening. "And I just think that the truth in this country is we don't have to agree on everything. We really don't. We never have in America. But...

The governor announced the state would be conducting its own investigation on the incident. He said he does not believe it is “in the best interest” of the state to have “the same federal agencies that are seeking to prosecute Donald Trump leading this investigation.” “I think [the federal government has taken] the position they don’t want the state of Florida to be involved in this. But here’s the thing, there were multiple violations of Florida law across multiple jurisdictions,” DeSantis said on the Ingraham show. DeSantis said Routh, the suspect, committed potential violations of Florida law, and the state...

Vice President Kamala Harris came under fire Wednesday as an old tweet in which she thanked now-disgraced rapper Sean “Diddy” Combs for hosting a fundraiser for her first presidential campaign resurfaced after the hip-hop mogul’s arrest on sex crime charges. Harris’ message of gratitude was sent during her previous run for the White House after Diddy hosted a town hall on racial inequality for her campaign. “Thank you,@Diddy, for hosting this town hall last night. There’s a lot at stake for our communities right now and it’s critical we bring to the forefront how coronavirus is perpetuating racial inequality and...
