"The terrorists who sparked Bonfire Night were fighting a regime which imposed the protestant religion with hangings, burnings and bloodshed"

Good for the government they intended to govern, more than can be said about our current mess.
Wouldn’t be the first time a basically secular or unbelieving power took a church under its wing for convenience’s sake, and did things that were wrong for the sake of it.
Even in the Old Testament, I kind of doubt that Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego had wished the draconian measures that Nebuchadnezzar did against those who “dared say a word against” the spectacularly saving Jehovah. Even though it DID protect the Jews.
Then there’s Peter, who chopped off the soldier’s ear.
Nebbishes and tyrants, they each wreak their own kind of harm.
Over the last 20 to 50 years some good history has been written on what really happened during those years in England. Relying mostly on state records a picture has emerged which contradicts the common opinion.
For example, the civilized world was absolutely shocked when Henry VIII had Thomas More, John Fisher and the Carthusian monks executed. They were known to be innocent and holy men. For anyone to say anything or write anything contrary to the king, or Elizabeth meant they would be accused of high treason. So everyone got to be quite mum about stuff. That is the reason why Shakespeare seems to be so mysterious.
But out of the morass emerged the people who fought for the truth - Catholics and Protestant alike - and they paid the price for their opinions.
I have read the true descriptions of the executions from the witnesses and it is amazing that anyone would continue to fight after seeing a hanging, drawing and quartering preceded by an emasculation done on a fully conscious person.
Poor old Guy.
That was a problem, dying for an opinion over and above a Savior. Neither side of the church should have pressed for this.
And yet the Catholic Popes and others in authority murdered millions of protestants for believing in the Bible as the final authority.
See the Huguenots.
I have done 7 years of research on this topic in preparation for a book. Their opinion was that they could not deny Jesus. The absolute worst thing they could do would be to deny Him. It was considered to be tantamount to the three denials of Peter.
Freedom of conscience is what our Founders fought for also. And all of them were cut from the very same cloth.
More stood his ground and would not take the oath because he decided Jesus could not be denied.
There are people right now in the Middle East who are asked to deny Jesus and they are being beheaded because of it.
Do not denigrate the people who lose their lives for Truth, because they will not deny Our Lord.
At that time the Catholic church was as violent against the Protestants. Both sides were busy fighting religious wars.
“And yet the Catholic Popes and others in authority murdered millions of protestants for believing in the Bible as the final authority.”
Nope. First, the only time “millions” of Protestants died was in the Thirty Years War - when millions of Catholics died at the hands of Protestants too. There were no “millions” killed by any pope or any collection of popes. Also, no Catholic “in authority” killed “millions” of Protestants except in open warfare - when millions of Catholics were killed as well. By the way, many Protestants killed Protestants.
“See the Huguenots.”
I already know all about the Huguenots. They killed and were killed. And many survived to this day. So?
“At that time the Catholic church was as violent against the Protestants. Both sides were busy fighting religious wars.”
Yeah, but once side was fighting for what always was and the other was fighting to overthrow that.
And yet, Protestant ENGLAND went on to become the major power in the world as Catholic SPAIN melted away slowly, slowly. Then it was Catholic France which began to melt away quickly after their secular revolution.

Sorry, I just had to see what the screwed up character set would do with your username...
***after seeing a hanging, drawing and quartering preceded by an emasculation***
“Can no one rid me of this meddlesome priest?” so Becket got whacked.
Then think of William Wallace. Such executions were common back then.
“It’s good to be da King!”
The Catholic Queen Mary killed more Protestants in 5 years than Elizabeth did in her entire reign - and Elizabeth had greater cause, given the Catholic Church was trying to overthrow her.
As for “what always was” - the medieval Catholic Church fought to enlarge and enrich itself. It had a terrible record for anything slightly resembling honesty and integrity.
“On the eve of the Reformation, there is no doubt there were small groups in England pressing for reforms. Then, as now, such perspectives were nothing new - John Wycliffe, the Oxford theologian, had been a prominent advocate for radical reforms two centuries earlier.”
Would that be the John Wycliffe whose remains were dug up, burned, and the ashes cast into the river Swift at the command of Pope Martin V?
“And yet, Protestant ENGLAND went on to become the major power in the world as Catholic SPAIN melted away slowly, slowly.”
And that proves what? At one time Sweden was a major power. So was Poland-Lithuania. And now?
“Then it was Catholic France which began to melt away quickly after their secular revolution.”
And the U.K. is withering away slowly, slowly. And?
