Charred Remains of 1,500-Year-Old Hebrew Scroll Deciphered

A burned 1,500-year-old Hebrew scroll found on the shore of the Dead Sea was recently deciphered, 45 years after archaeologists discovered it, researchers in Israel have announced.

"The deciphering of the scroll, which was a puzzle for us for 45 years, is very exciting," Sefi Porath, the archaeologist who discovered the scroll in 1970 in Ein Gedi, Israel, said in a statement from The Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA).

The Ein Gedi parchment scroll is the oldest scroll discovered from the Hebrew Bible since the Dead Sea Scrolls, which date to the end of the Second Temple period, about 2,000 years ago.

The parchment scroll was so charred that it was illegible to the naked eye. Only with advanced technology did the scroll reveal the opening verses of the book of Leviticus, the third book of the Hebrew Bible. [The Holy Land: 7 Amazing Archaeological Finds]

Scorched scrolls

The researchers weren't expecting to be able to pull information from the burned scroll.

"This discovery absolutely astonished us; we were certain it was just a shot in the dark but decided to try and scan the burnt scroll anyway," said Pnina Shor, curator and director of the IAA's Dead Sea Scrolls Project.

The fire damage to the Ein Gedi scrolls made them impossible to open, so the IAA worked with scientists from Israel and abroad to scan the scrolls with a microcomputed tomography machine (micro-CT), which is "just like what they do in the doctor's office but at a very high resolution, probably a hundred times more accurate than the medical procedures that we do," said Brent Seales, a professor of computer science at the University of Kentucky. Seales analyzed the scans with a digital imaging software that virtually unrolled the scroll and allowed him to visualize the text.

In before the "Drink your Ovaltine" post. But seriously, it's amazing what they are able to decipher. Took a long time in the article to get to the actual text of the scroll, but it's pretty cool.

I'm still not quite sure why God was interested in burnt offerings and animal sacrifices, but I suppose I can't wrap my mind around the context of the time.

He was teaching His people there was a blood price for sin.

It translates “Caution: Highly Flammable. Keep Away from Open Flame.”

To set the image for His sacrifice.

Another thing that’s amazing is that in millenia of copying and re-copying Torah scrolls by hand, that not so much as a letter ever changed. The text is identical to any book of Leviticus at any synagogue in New Jersey. All by hand, on sheepskin.

As to why God wanted animal sacrifices, that’s pretty obvious. The priests had to eat something!

"He was teaching His people there was a blood price for sin."

It also establishes the principal of substitutionary atonement and foreshadows the final substitutionary blood sacrifice of Jesus Christ.

Without the shedding of blood, there is no remission of sins. - Why Christ’s blood was shed on the cross; and why animal sacrifice is no longer needed.

RE: The priests had to eat something!

If that was the reason, why bother sacrificing, just kill and eat.

Because it wasn’t the priests’ goats and bullocks!

They had to convince the herdsmen and merchants and farmers that The BIG GUY demanded some nice smoky morsels, and therefore they needed to send some rams and bullocks up to the Temple Mount OR ELSE.

The Levites were no fools.

“It also establishes the principal of substitutionary atonement and foreshadows the final substitutionary blood sacrifice of Jesus Christ.”

Exactly,

God used the legal conditions within this fallen dead world to establish a Holy mechanism, the Laws and Ordinances of Moses, to then insert himself into it but also it required absolute obedience on Israels part or that transgression must then be punitively measured until it is come to the full and established (fulfilled by Jesus on this fallen Earth)

As Abraham said, the lord will provide ‘Himself’ a sacrifice,

He was making a way when there was no way,

That transgression is almost worked through and this is why I continue to tell everyone that when the restoration of the ‘transgressors being brought to the full’ that is:

Israel restored in 1947 and Jerusalem in 1967, which now meet the two conditions in Daniel Chapter 9 to count the 490 years determined upon Israel, when this world system (USA/UN etc.,) undoes that work by God, causing a separation, division, ‘covenant with death’ and stealing his inheritance of the vineyard,

That is when the end of the age will come,
