Where Fundamentalists Are Right: 5 Things Catholics Need to Take Seriously Again
ChurchPOP ^ | 2014 | Brantly Millegan

The term “fundamentalist” is a pejorative term today, used to label someone the speaker believes is an irrational religious extremist of some kind.

But a hundred years ago, the term was taken as a badge of honor by theologically conservative Protestants to distinguish themselves from liberal Protestantism. While liberal Protestants in mainline denominations were denying basic Christian teachings like the authority of the Bible and the bodily resurrection of Jesus, conservative Protestants called for going back to the “fundamentals” of the faith – hence the term.

There are obviously a lot of issues on which Catholics and fundamentalists disagree, but there are a few important issues for which fundamentalists take a lot of heat in our culture that Catholics actually agree with them on – or at least are supposed to. Unfortunately, in my experience many Catholics – afraid to have themselves labeled a “fundamentalist” – can throw the baby out with the bath water and end up denying beliefs espoused by fundamentalists that are also taught by the Catholic Church.

Here are 5 things that are already present in the Catholic faith, but that Catholics could learn from their fundamentalist brothers and sisters to take more seriously:

“I will say you do not have a clue as to what you said.”

Apparently it is you who have no clue as to what I said.

“I have known this man since 1983 and he is one of the most Godly men and most intelligent ones I have ever known.”

And I said nothing against him.

“Would you like to list those misinterpretations?”

No. Frankly, I regret ever trying to help you people. I’ll answer to God for my lack of charity, but it’s like trying to teach table manners to howler monkeys.

that is an opinon at best...and isn't that called sola scriptura or something like that??? again, point out specific errors in Catholic teaching and your opinions don't count.

It may just be an opinion to you that the word of God is absolute truth but it is not opinion that that absolute truth condemns your religion...

And you neglected to comment on your religion's error claiming apostolic tradition was legitimate right from the get go even tho the early church fathers rejected any of that kind of nonsense...

point out 1 or 2 or 3 Catholic teachings that have been proved to be in error....

Soon as...

(you) point out 1 or 2 or 3 Catholic non-biblical teachings that have been proven to be absolutely necessary

Mary, Help of Those in Need

Holy Mary,

give strength to the weak,
comfort the sorrowful,
pray for God's people,

intercede for religious.
May all who seek your help

Now as to the "false teachings" on Mary being sinless and a lifelong virgin...I've seen nothing from you to refute the thousands of years of Catholic teachings to that effect.....

Poor ol' frustrated Joseph!

NEVER gets to CONSUMMATE his marriage!

Mocked by his friends!!

Has to listen, for at least 12 years, "Not tonight, Joe. I have a headache."

The 15 promises were included in a ‘how to pray the rosary’ instruction manual with the rosary beads I received from a nice catholic..

Thank GOD you were not living in the 1100's!

It was only in the year 1214, however, that the Church received the Rosary in its present form and according to the method we use today.

>Your post 167.....the false teachings on Mary being sinless, a virgin and assumed, that we have to go through Mary to get to Christ......for starters.<

Noone teaches that you have to go through Mary to reach Jesus....Now as to the "false teachings" on Mary being sinless and a lifelong virgin...I've seen nothing from you to refute the thousands of years of Catholic teachings to that effect.....You might not believe it, but that makes no difference whatsoever!!

Regarding going through Mary to get to Christ....

"Mary is the intermediary through whom is distributed unto us this immense treasure of mercies gathered by God, for mercy and truth were created by Jesus Christ. Thus as no man goeth to the Father but by the Son, so no man goeth to Christ but by His Mother." (Vatican Website:  Encyclical of Pope Leo 13th on the Rosary, Octobri Mense, Pope Leo XIII, 1903-1914)

However, the Bible notes this:

1 Tim. 2:5, "For there is one God, and one mediator also between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.“

John 14:6 Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me."

In the Greek regarding John 14:6, there is emphasis in this statement by Christ with the use of the personal pronoun in conjunction with the verb. In essence, He is driving home the point that it is only through Him that we get to the Father and Heaven.

Regarding Mary's "sinlessness":

Romans 3:23...all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. No where in the NT does it even suggest or hint that Mary was "sinless". I think Paul would have noted that if that were the case.

However, Paul does note this in 2 Cor 5:21 regarding Christ:

He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.

Regarding Mary remaining a virgin....Mark 6:3

Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? Are not His sisters here with us?” And they took offense at Him.

And please, don't try to reference some lame catholic website that says these were his cousins...even Douay Rheims translates the word as brother.

So there you have, in the Bible, three clear repudiations of catholic teaching. And you're right...I don't believe catholicism. I have found I have to verify everything catholics say. I have found a lot of their teaching false. The more I study catholicism I find it is a cult.

It is my sincere prayer that people leave catholicism and embrace Christianity.

Go read your post again when you were critical of anyone with advanced degrees. Think it was 104. I live in an area where there are many, many people with advanced degrees. The ones I have met are smart and have a lot of common sense. I admire them very much for sticking to their dreams. I knew one person who went back for his Masters. He quit because he knew more about physics than the teachers he had. Look up: www.aztechnology.com
That is the company he founded in his basement.

“Go read your post again when you were critical of anyone with advanced degrees.”

Perhaps it’s reading skills.

Let me try to help. I was critical of *some* people who have advanced degrees, by way of explaining why credentials are not *necessarily* the most significant thing about a person.

I think a person should actually try to understand what has been said *before* they embark upon character assassination.

Mister, my reading skills are probably better than most people on here. Try to be clearer that you were not being critical of my minister. I have loved to read since I was in first grade way back in 1950-51. My high school teachers asked me to read to the class when needed. I even enjoyed Old English. I have over 200 books on my iPad and have read every one of them and have read most multiple times. One of my favorite authors is William W. Johnstone. If you have not read his Out of the Ashes series, do so. He also wrote The Last Mountain Man series about Smoke Jensen, The First Mountain Man about Preacher, and many more. I discovered his books decades ago.
