Christians leave Mosul
He refused to keep silent about the violence agaist Mosul’s Christians who are forced to choose between converting to the Muslim faith, paying the jizyah (the Islamic tax for non-Muslims) or fleeing. Professor Mahmoud Al ‘Asali, a law professor who lectures on pedagogy at the University of Mosul, had the courage to make a stand against this brutal duress which he believes go against the Muslim commandments. But he paid for this gesture with his life: he was killed by ISIS militants in Mosul yesterday.

Amidst the ocean of tragedies currently being witnessed in the Middle Eastern country, the website did not want to let this act of great courage go unnoticed. Professor Ali ‘Asali knew what he was risking: everyone in Mosul knows that in Raqqa - the Syrian city which the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant seized last year –there are many human rights activists who have paid for their opposition to ISIS’ acts of intolerance with their own lives. But Al ‘Asali was nevertheless unable to stand by in silence.
And so are many other Muslims, who have launched the “I am Iraqi, I am Christian” campaign in response to the letter N’s written on the walls of Christian homes in Mosul. Yesterday some of them turned up outside the Chaldean Church of St. George in Baghdad, with a banner displaying the slogan and posted a picture on Facebook.
But these acts of rebellion have not been successful in stopping the madness of Islamic State fundamentalists. And so today, the ethnic cleansing continued, with the jizyah – the Islamic “protection” tax which all non-Muslims are required to pay if they wish to stay or return to Mosul – being applied. The monthly figure to be paid is 450 dollars, which is an impossible sum for anyone living in Northern Iraq to pay. Today, yet another historic Christian location fell intot he hands of the Islamic State: the building in question is the Syro-Catholic monastery of Mar Benham, close to Qaraqosh, the Christian city in the Nineveh Plain where the majority of Christians have fled to. Monks have been present in mar Benham since the 4th century approximately. “They forced the three monks and some families residing in the monastery to go away and leave the keys behind,” the Syro-catholic bishop of Mosul, Yohanna Petros Moshe told Fides news agency. The Bagdadhope blog reported that the monastery underwent restoration work in 1986 and became a pilgrimage destination for Christians and some Muslims too.

It's not ethnic, it's religious.
BTW, the jizyah was in its origin the tax paid by non-Muslims in the areas of the Byzantine Empire and Persia they conquered. It was generally considerably lower than the taxes imposed by their previous overlords.
The same can be said by most of the above establishments branching out into Macomb county....and the rest of S.E. Michigan.......
There is a lot of Chaldeans here in East San Diego County. They are upset by the murder of Christians in Iraq and understandably so. On those grounds we can agree. Where we differ is when they blame every Iraqi death on the US saying there was less killing and their families and friends in Iraq lived better lives under Saddam’s rule. They now want American intervention in Iraq to control these monsters, but they don’t want any bombing because they don’t want any more dead civilians. I say not another American should die for a people who hate us and blame us for the miserable state their country is all due to the barbaric cult of islam.
Let’s take a moment to recognize that not all Muslims are like these sickos. The incredibly brave Muslim professor has given the ultimate example of that. Risking (and in this case losing) your life in resistance to evil is truly heroic.
The East San Diego County city of El Cajon is home to the second largest Chaldean population behind Detroit. In El Cajon, 1 in 4 residents are Chaldean. 60% own at least 1 business (usually gas stations, liquor stores and the like) and 30% own 2 businesses or more. They are not well liked around here partly because the uninformed believe them to be Muslim and partly because they own all these businesses. Those who vote vote democrat.
That brave man was not following what the Koran says to do. The ones who killed him were consistent with that awful book. They certainly did not consider him a Moslem even if he said he was one.
I will say this, they are not overly friendly but once you gain their trust, they will go out of their way to help you.
I've been buying my gas at the local BP station for the past 13 years and have gotten to know the Chaldean owner, his wife and all his sons and workers and they know me by name and say hi everytime I walk in.
Back in the '90's when I lived in another neighborhood, I was a regular at a Chaldean owned party store and got to know the entire family there.
One day I was the target of a road rage incident by a couple of punks who followed me into that parking lot. When I got out of my car, they did too and had me cornered but the owner and his sons saw what was going down and came running out to the parking lot to my rescue...........the punks jumped into their car and drove off.
Chaldeans are extremely loyal to their own and if you are a supplier, it's extremely hard to break into their "society". But once you do, you've got an open book to all the contacts you can make...........
And as a side note, if you ever wish to know the difference between a Chaldean and a Muslim, ask a Chaldean if he's muslim........LOL!
I own rentals and I happily rent to Chaldeans. They pay their rent and keep to themselves. I wish I could say that about all my tenants.

And he was the only one. Man bites dog ping. Thanks NYer. Bravo Professor, hope you’re not the last, but I believe you will be.
It’s partially ethnic, as the Christians there aren’t 100% Arab. Many of them descend from the Assyrians.
This professor is a hero, and he has not died in vain - he has shown a light in the darkness.
“Professor Ali ‘Asali” - to judge by his name, I would say he is probably an Iraqi Shia. They of course have as much to lose as the Christians, as ISIS advances. However, he could have kept mum, and just took a hike to Najaf or one of those areas. Instead, he stood up for his home, his neighbours, and true humanity.
ITA My oncologist is one of these special hero’s. Pakistani Muslim whose life is all about saving lives. I thank God everyday for sending me to him. As do ALL his patients.
