Forget decades of scientific studies and transgender people’s own lives—the Southern Baptist Convention has gone ahead and decided gender is only about your junk.
“Gender” refers to one’s felt, and societally constructed, sense of being male, female, or somewhere in between. As understood by a generation of psychologists, sociologists, and other scientists, it is distinct from sex, which has to do with biology, genitalia, and genetics. Put roughly, sex is between your legs. Gender is between your ears.

I don’t think it’s that hard to understand the issue. I’m a guy and I feel like a guy. I like guy things, and the thought of being and acting like a woman is pretty foreign to me. If tomorrow I woke up in some nightmare with lady parts rather than guy parts, it wouldn’t be so simple as looking down, shrugging and saying “guess I’m a lady now.” I’d still feel like a guy and being and acting like a woman would feel really weird and distasteful to me. That’s the situation many of these folks find themselves in, and gender perception is pretty resistant to change.
There’s certainly room for disagreement about what they should do about the mismatch between their sex and their felt gender, but it’s not an easy position to be in, and it’s not as simple as changing their minds. There is no known drug or psychotherapy that is successful at getting people to change their felt gender. Think for a second about what it would take to get you to change yours. Most of them just live “in the closet” and try to fit into the gender that is consistent with their sex, but they never feel right about it and they experience lifelong distress about it.
It’s a psychological disorder, so it’s by definition an experience most people aren’t familiar with. If you still have trouble understanding it, think about people with phantom limb pain. It’s odd, but they can stare at the place where their arm used to be and still feel that arm hurting like crazy. It’s not like they can just turn off the pain with logic.
Well, you waking up to look down and see lady parts after a lifetime of being a guy with guy parts isn’t really the same. What does it mean to “feel like a guy” or “feel like a girl” anyway? Guys want to fix cars and girls want to go shoe shopping? Roles are not nearly as cut and dried as they once were. People don’t have to mutilate their bodies or pump them with artificial hormones to engage in activities once consigned to the opposite sex.
Birth announcements stating a baby’s sex/gender are so last century. Now parents will have to say they had a baby who will determine when it is ready what sex/gender it believes itself to be.

Well said. As a matter of fact - the sermon I listened to today was right along those lines. Our feelings are controlled by our thoughts.

I get what you are saying, and I don’t dispute it. You make sense— in a normal analysis. When you say, “I like guy things” it makes sense to me. But we are being taught there is NO SUCH THING as “guy things.” Girls can like the same things and not be considered weird. The very same mindset that has created this transgender issue (or at least brought it to the forefront of discussion) has intentionally destroyed, or tried to destroy, all of our former notions about what it means to be a guy vs. being a girl.

Seriously, you don’t “feel like” the sex you are? Would you be just as comfortable with the parts of the opposite sex, and “passing” as the opposite sex? I wouldn’t. There is a sense of gendered self that people have, and in most people, it’s consistent with their sex. In these folks, it’s not. That’s what makes it a disorder. If you think about it, to have something so basic to your existence confused must be very distressing. I think the understanding part of it is easy. It’s the treatment part that’s not.

Yes indeed, I would choose to except God’s definition regarding sex and gender, rather the the modern day witchdoctors of psychology, scientists, and psychiatrists. God’s word is much more reliable than theory and philosophy.
It’s not a matter of “understanding gender,” but rather an issue of understanding God’s truth.
Common sense has prevailed once again with the Baptists. Just because some mentally deranged pervert undergoes genital mutilation surgery and injects themselves with a daily dose of steroids doesn’t mean they have changed their gender. These people are in serious need of psychotherapy.

Hey, don’t get me wrong. I have no questions about who I am, and neither does my wife. My point is that the liberals have doubled back on themselves. They have tried to destroy the meaning of what it is to be a man or a woman. If a man can be anything and feel any way, and the same for a woman, then gender ends up having no meaning. Transgender means what, then? If you claim to be transgendered, how can that be? Sexual orientation doesn’t matter anymore. Behaviors do not belong to any particular sex or gender, so what does it mean to “identify” as a male or a female?

You’re right! As a female, I used to enjoy tinkering with my motorcycle before going in and relaxing with some embroidery project. Of course all of that was before getting married and having children, it was when I had plenty of free time, but I felt I had it all! It never crossed my mind that I was acting like a guy, I just did what I wanted to do that day. That’s all. It’s not complicated at all!
