Charlotte fallout: nun cancels all speaking engagements, takes leave from teaching

From The Catholic Herald:

The Dominican sister who gave a presentation on sexuality to students at Charlotte Catholic High School that sparked controversy among students and parents last month is taking a sabbatical from teaching and canceling her other speaking engagements.

The presentation March 21 by Dominican Sister Jane Dominic Laurel of Nashville, Tenn., entitled “Masculinity and Femininity: Difference and Gift,” drew the ire of hundreds of students and parents over the past two weeks, and their emotions boiled over during a parents meeting with school and diocesan leaders Wednesday night.

Sister Jane has a doctorate in sacred theology from the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas in Rome, and her presentation at Charlotte Catholic was based on a series of instructional videos she created for Aquinas College in Nashville where she is an associate professor. She gave similar talks to youths and parents at St. Mark Church in Huntersville on March 23 and gave a related talk at Charlotte Catholic High School last fall.

In an April 4 statement, the president of Aquinas College defended the school’s curriculum and Sister Jane’s credentials as a theologian, but acknowledged that the portion of Sister Jane’s presentation of social science data about the alleged causes of same-sex attraction – which prompted many of the concerns from parents and students – was outside the scope of her academic background.

The statement reads in part:

“We believe it is our privilege to bring the best aspects of our faith tradition to bear on the moral and cultural questions of the present age. In her presentation, Sister Jane Dominic spoke clearly on matters of faith and morals. Her deviation into realms of sociology and anthropology was beyond the scope of her expertise. Sister is a trained theologian from a Pontifical University and has the credentials to contribute to scholarly bodies of work. This she has done in the past with distinction. The unfortunate events at Charlotte Catholic High School are not representative of the quality of Sister’s academic contributions or the positive influence that she has had on her students. The students at Charlotte Catholic were unprepared, as were their parents, for the topic that Sister was asked to deliver. The consequence was a complete misrepresentation of the school’s intention to bring a message that would enlighten and bring freedom and peace.”

I SO AGREE WITH YOU.

why be Catholic then? I might as well be episcopalian or Non denominational. Ok, Church dudes...which part of the doctrine can I take and which can I leave???You just told the world and that school they can pick and chose...just unbelievable.

so, let me get this right...I just throw a temper tantrum and I get to say “I don’t FEEL its fair I have to go to church every sunday! and I will just confess those sins that don’t get me upset.”

I’m sure she is being comforted by the Lord’s word right now.

“Blessed are ye, when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you from their company, and shall reproach you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man’s sake.”

Luke 6:22, KJV

I read the Bible, it is truth; no academia needed.

Ugh. Now it is acceptable to attack NUNS. I am not Roman.Catholic, but this is beyond the pale.

And the quick cave of the school doesn’t bode well.

The spirit of this mob seems to come directly from Genesis:...But don’t do anything to these men, for they have come under the protection of my roof.”...9 “Get out of our way,” they replied. “This fellow came here as a foreigner, and now he wants to play the judge! We’ll treat you worse than them.” They kept bringing pressure on Lot and moved forward to break down the door.

Good point. There is nothing new under the sun. Certainly not where sin and evil are concerned.

Students, apparently egged on by parents. I read also that some people (many people, actually) who tried to support the sister were shouted down by this mob.

Kids are learning from the media and from radical leftists like Obama that anyone who disagrees with the party line in any way has no rights and becomes a non-person.

“Too many Catholic bishops are spineless cowards, nothing more than backslapping democrat politicians. Dolan and Wuerl come to mind.”

Pardon me if I speak as a non-Catholic/non-Christian, but it seems to me that the Catholic Church puts undue emphasis on “the poor” at the expensive of Christ’s other teachings, and at the expense of the whole corpus of Divine wisdom found in both the Old and New Testaments.

The overarching emphasis on “the poor” seems to easily lead the Catholic clergy into naive collaboration with various shades of manipulative Communist philosophies and politics which ultimately help neither the poor, nor society, nor the appeal of Christianity at all.

As an outsider, I’m curious to hear if others on the inside notice this.

I find it interesting that you have the World condemning Homosexual Catholic Priests for their transgressions against the youth of the Church and yet, we now have the World celebrating homosexuality.

I would expect that all of the money won against the Church in past lawsuits will now be returned???

k, Church dudes...which part of the doctrine can I take and which can I leave?

See the Catechism, or Ludwig Ott's Fundamentals of Catholic Dogma.

Bishops can be imprudent and even heretical. It's been that way since the founding of the Church. But dogmatic Church teaching is inerrant.

The Catholic Church has never waivered in teaching the truth
about abortion, homosexuality, marriage and women ordination. That’s why the Church is hated by the secular world. Catholic Charities is the biggest charity in the history of the world. Feeding the hungry, caring for the poor, treating the sick.

thanks. appreciate your reasoned comment.

I keep forgetting that the church is comprised of humans.
I now tend to go to mass where the priests are honest and true to Catholic teachings and I always feel better when I leave.
