Why can't 'The Bible' TV series get the Bible right?

With Ninja angels in ancient Sodom, the highly publicized TV miniseries "The Bible," which made its national debut Sunday night on the History Channel, does not always stick to Scripture, despite being produced by two famous Christians and having numerous biblical experts as well as Texas megapastor Joel Osteen advising on the project.

Full title with subtitle: Why can't 'The Bible' TV series get the Bible right? Famous Christians of today deviate from Scripture

I was leery about this mini-series from the first advertisement I saw. My worries have been well confirmed.

With apostate Joel Osteen advising, what could go wrong?

Ditto...

If there's one thing noticable about Christians, it's Biblical nitpicking.

Most folks seem to believe it's them and their group that gets it right, and all the rest are going to hell.

"Highly publicized is right! Yet someone forgot to inform the rest of us, prior to the marketing of this series, that Mark Burnett and wife Roma Downey were "famous Christians".

Most of all, I love this explanation from a recent Christian Science Monitor article on the series' runaway popularity amongst Christians:

Seeking to explain the broad appeal of the series to what he believes to be a largely Christian audience, Bob Waliszewski, director of the Plugged In Ministry, which reviews media for Christian advocacy group Focus on the Family, says, “This may be largely preaching to the choir, but the choir is increasingly illiterate when it comes to the Bible.” This series allows people with a sketchy grasp of the Scriptures, he says, “to sit and watch it in the privacy of their homes.”

It is a good 30,000 foot view for those who are unfamiliar with the Bible. Hopefully, some that watch are inspired to study the text, which I think is the purpose. Doubtfully will anyone replace the text with the miniseries. Yes, it is incomplete and takes some liberties, but I am enjoying the show and see no harm in viewing it.

They could have the Jews searching for immunity idols, competing in reward challenges and voting each other out at tribal councils.

I was walking across a bridge one day, and I saw a man standing on the edge, about to jump off. So I ran over and said, “Stop! Don’t do it!”
“Why shouldn’t I?” he said.
I said, “Well, there’s so much to live for!”
He said, “Like what?”
I said, “Well...are you religious or atheist?”
He said, “Religious.”
I said, “Me too! Are you Christian or Buddhist?”
He said, “Christian.”
I said, “Me too! Are you Catholic or Protestant?”
He said, “Protestant.”
I said, “Me too! Are you Episcopalian or Baptist?”
He said, “Baptist!”
I said,”Wow! Me too! Are you Baptist Church of GOD or Baptist Church of the Lord?”
He said, “Baptist Church of GOD!”
I said, “Me too! Are you Original Baptist Church of GOD, or are you Reformed Baptist Church of GOD?”
He said,”Reformed Baptist Church of GOD!”
I said, “Me too! Are you Reformed Baptist Church of GOD, reformation of 1879, or Reformed Baptist Church of GOD, reformation of 1915?”
He said, “Reformed Baptist Church of GOD, reformation of 1915!”
I said, “Die, heretic scum”, and pushed him off.

Why can't WND get their dates right? The series did not premiere on Sunday. It's been running since March 3rd.

I agree completely. Wasn’t The Lord more upset with the yokes of the self- appointed Sadducees and Pharisees placed upon the people. The nit- picky rules they derived simply to be self- righteous. In essentials unity, in non essentials liberty. I must work on every other Saturday and Sunday, these folks would deem me unfit for “their society”. Don’t worry about the cleanliness of the cup folks, worry more about the cleanliness of your soul. God Save us, if we are upset about the color of an actor or any other detail. The important thing is The Message, The Truth. /rant Love the Series! I plan on buying at least four copies, this is as good as the Ten Commandments. Powerful stuff.

It will do just the opposite. It reveals that those who claim to be Christians and believe the Bible do not think the stories are good enough and need embellishing.

Many outright falsehoods are included. What would those outside of Christianity think of this?

From Executive Producers Roma Downey and Mark Burnett comes The Bible ... Check out the CFDb Movie Review Episode 1 Episode 2 Episode 3. Film Synopsis: The Bible is an epic five-week, 10 hour television miniseries premiering March 3, ... Award winning husband and wife team, Mark Burnett and Roma Downey.

http://www.christianfilmdatabase.com/review/the-bible-rnett-bible-miniseries-on-history-channel/

for those that say they do not like it the ratings are beating every network for that time slot it seems some really like it..BTW CBS,ABC,NBC,etc would not show this it took a while to get this on and History channel is the one that is showing it..The reason the Obama networks would not show this is because it was about Christ..If it had of been about Mohammad they would have fought to show it.. I have taped the first shows and will tape the last this week..Then I will enjoy it..

Agreed. My wife and I are enjoying it. And whether some like it or not, there are different translations and many disagreements on many aspects of the Bible. That doesn’t make it non-Christian.

We are uplifted when we watch it. It’s fun and entertaining.

Good grief.

"According to the Old Testament, angels merely struck the citizens of Sodom with blindness before God firebombed the entire city. The TV series did include those elements as well. The show, however, did not mention the rampant homosexuality in Sodom, or that the city's men actually sought to have sex with the angels. (Genesis 19:5)"

Give’m a break? Why? They have the record, the Word and doing it accurately would be just as easy as the error strewn production, so why do they deserve a break?

On these forums posters beat on the news media for deliberately distorting the truth so why do the producers of some twisted rendition of the Scriptures deserve a break?

I think they should try to do everything as accurately as possible.

Semites are Caucasian. I am amazed that you didn’t know that.

King David supposedly had red hair. He is described as having a ruddy complexion.

I don’t care who they used to portray angels.

Because most of the defenders of this mini-serious likely believe that the Bible is a book of fables, not worthy of being accurately depicted. They are no different than godless liberals in this respect.

Sad, what Christianity in this country has sunk to. God is no longer esteemed as the awful, ineffable One to whom all creation will one day bow. He is just entertainment, on the level of "Star Trek."

That's my concern. Christianity is being split into two different camps.

One side views God the same way as read in the bible the other side wants to change God into their own image. Look at the mega pastors and how they are changing the meaning of what is said in the bible. Rob Bell comes to mind.

I think the multi-ethnic casting is great. My daughter who is 9 asked me if the Asian dude was really an angel. She asked me because all the depictions of angels she sees are Caucasians. Nice teaching moment.

As a side note I thought those angels kicking arse was great.

Some early Christian Africans would put flour on the dead because every picture they had seen of anyone from the Bible or in heaven was pasty white. Not a brown semite in the entire visual lexicon they were familiar with.
