Full title with subtitle: Why can't 'The Bible' TV series get the Bible right? Famous Christians of today deviate from Scripture

I was leery about this mini-series from the first advertisement I saw. My worries have been well confirmed.

With apostate Joel Osteen advising, what could go wrong?

A guy at work here is still upset that Samson was portrayed as black in this show.

...the highly publicized TV miniseries "The Bible," which made its national debut Sunday night on the History Channel, does not always stick to Scripture, despite being produced by two famous Christians and having numerous biblical experts as well as Texas megapastor Joel Osteen advising on the project.

I was leery about this mini-series from the first advertisement I saw. My worries have been well confirmed. With apostate Joel Osteen advising, what could go wrong?

"Highly publicized is right! Yet someone forgot to inform the rest of us, prior to the marketing of this series, that Mark Burnett and wife Roma Downey were "famous Christians".

Most of all, I love this explanation from a recent Christian Science Monitor article on the series' runaway popularity amongst Christians:

Seeking to explain the broad appeal of the series to what he believes to be a largely Christian audience, Bob Waliszewski, director of the Plugged In Ministry, which reviews media for Christian advocacy group Focus on the Family, says, “This may be largely preaching to the choir, but the choir is increasingly illiterate when it comes to the Bible.” This series allows people with a sketchy grasp of the Scriptures, he says, “to sit and watch it in the privacy of their homes.”

It is a good 30,000 foot view for those who are unfamiliar with the Bible. Hopefully, some that watch are inspired to study the text, which I think is the purpose. Doubtfully will anyone replace the text with the miniseries. Yes, it is incomplete and takes some liberties, but I am enjoying the show and see no harm in viewing it.

Just be happy with what you've got.

They could have the Jews searching for immunity idols, competing in reward challenges and voting each other out at tribal councils.

Why can't 'The Bible' TV series get the Bible right?

Why can't WND get their dates right? The series did not premiere on Sunday. It's been running since March 3rd.

“With apostate Joel Osteen advising, what could go wrong?”

The question asked in the title is answered pretty quickly.

I wonder what impression this leaves to those who have never read the Bible before?

Will bring more people to God?

I would agree with you about the first episode, but not the ones I’ve seen since. I’ve enjoyed them quite a bit. Must have been the mood I was in that night, but the second one got to me. I felt it.

for those that say they do not like it the ratings are beating every network for that time slot it seems some really like it..BTW CBS,ABC,NBC,etc would not show this it took a while to get this on and History channel is the one that is showing it..The reason the Obama networks would not show this is because it was about Christ..If it had of been about Mohammad they would have fought to show it.. I have taped the first shows and will tape the last this week..Then I will enjoy it..

Casting a Caucasian to play a Semite = not a problem.

Casting an Asian to play a celestial being = omg! Ninja angel! Cuz all Asians be ninjas!

Casting an AfricanAmerican as a Semite = a dealbreaker for some.

Casting a dark Arab as Satan = LOLZ. He looked like Obama.

I am enjoying the series very much. The nitpicking critics are the only problem but they are the kind of people who wake up in the moring looking for the next thing to be ticked off about.

I’m going to come down on the side of a positive review. My husband and I are recording it and plan on watching it with our kids who are 11, 9, and 6.

A few years ago, I took a bible overview class (meeting for an hour a week for 40 weeks, starting in Genesis and ending in Revelation) and was converted from a “religion-tolerant atheist” to a committed believer in Jesus Christ. In my opinion, the best way to understand the bible is to see it as one continuous story. Watching “The Greatest Story Ever Told” without any context of the Old Testament didn’t make a dent in me. Seeing how it all fit together made all the difference.

I’m not sure this movie is tying everything together very well, but as parents we can fill in some of what we see as important, point out the errors and omissions, and discuss theology on a level the kids can understand. It’s a great place to start.
