Burger King, In-N-Out and other chain locations in California raise prices after minimum wage increase: report

Prices for burgers, fries and other fast food items have increased at various restaurant chains across California, according to a recent report.

A New York Post investigation revealed that some fast food chains in the Los Angeles area raised prices on April 1, after new California statewide legislation went into effect Monday enforcing a $20 minimum wage for restaurants that have at least 60 locations nationwide, except those that make and sell their own bread.

Gov. Gavin Newsom signed the legislation, AB 1228, into law in September. In addition to the pay raises, it also establishes a "Fast Food Council," including representatives for both workers and employers, that can approve further pay increases and set standards for working conditions.

"The biggest leap was at a Burger King, where a Texas Double Whopper meal cost $15.09 on March 29 but surged to $16.89 on April 1, a whopping increase of $1.80 (nearly 12%) for the same meal," the Post reported.

"The Big Fish meal also jumped from $7.49 on the menu before April 1 to $11.49 after — an increase of $4 (53%)," the report continued. "Most other items increased anywhere from 25 cents to a dollar."

Hart House and In-N-Out Burger also saw price increases at certain locations.

However, the Post found that prices at Chick-fil-A, Wendy’s and McDonald’s did not rise, despite one McDonald's franchisee telling CNNBusiness that his restaurant has been affected by the minimum wage increase.

"As a business owner, when you’re dealing with this kind of extraordinary overnight change, you know, a 25% increase in wages,… (no) stone has to remain unturned," McDonald's franchise owner Scott Rodrick said. "And so we have looked at price, although I can’t charge $20 for a Happy Meal. My customers’ appetite to absorb menu board prices is not unlimited."

Only a few years ago (3 yrs ago) you could get a cheese burger ,fries and a coke for less than $3.

Which I have given up fast food...and store bought food...will not pay more than $2 for a dozen eggs..thank to the pervert who would be dictator.

When I was in high school in the early sixties, I could take my girlfriend on a date for 5 bucks. Two movie tickets at 75 cents each, and each get a cheeseburger, fries and milkshake at McD’s for under 2 dollars.

In the 70s you obviously didn’t have a microwave or fridge in college dorms. I’d spurge on Sunday getting a 1 piece chicken snack pack and get a coke from a machine for $2. Minimum wage was about $2/hr.

Today’s min. wage is about $16/hr. and a fast food meal is also $16 so nothing has been gained. We have lost the value of any savings we managed to accrue.

The left hates fast food establishments. They hate that the unwashed masses can eat out, or obtain jos skills in the private sector. They’ve finally found a way to get rid of them.

Just put a bread making machine in your restaurant and put it on the menu. Sell it for $100 a loaf. That way you only have to bake one loaf a day.

Pretty soon it is going to become cheaper to go to Disneyland than it is to visit McDonald’s.

$100 for burgers and fries for a family of five. The “new neighbors” (the politically correct term for illegal immigrants) are not going to like that. The State of California is going to amp up the funding for support of these “new neighbors”.

Can’t be. Some Keynesian Economist was on X saying that higher wages aren’t inflationary and wouldn’t result in higher prices…

Same with my daughter in the past. She worked at a Pizza Hut and constantly argued about getting her pay doubled to $15 from $7.50. She absolutely refused to believe it would raise prices.
I asked a fee questions.
1. What does the shift manager make? A: $10/hr.
2. How much does the store manager make? A: unsure
3. How bout the maintenence man (they had a district one she knew well) A: $15/hr.

So if your pay doubles, don’t everyone else deserve to have their pays doubled too? And if all cost of labor increase, they HAVE to get that $ somewhere. And that somewhere was the customer.

She refused to continue the debate...hanging onto to her firm stance.

No, no, this is all Newsome; the next Pres.

He inserted an exemption about baking bread specifically to benefit his buddy and donor, the CEO of Panera. This is total corruption and virtue signaling — unless you send money to Newsome.

Every restaurant take advantage of the Newsome exception. Install a small oven to bake tiny little rolls. Mandate each order buys one for 1 penny. Then you are exempt from this price hike.
