Burger King, In-N-Out and other chain locations in California raise prices after minimum wage increase: report

Prices for burgers, fries and other fast food items have increased at various restaurant chains across California, according to a recent report.

A New York Post investigation revealed that some fast food chains in the Los Angeles area raised prices on April 1, after new California statewide legislation went into effect Monday enforcing a $20 minimum wage for restaurants that have at least 60 locations nationwide, except those that make and sell their own bread.

Gov. Gavin Newsom signed the legislation, AB 1228, into law in September. In addition to the pay raises, it also establishes a "Fast Food Council," including representatives for both workers and employers, that can approve further pay increases and set standards for working conditions.

"The biggest leap was at a Burger King, where a Texas Double Whopper meal cost $15.09 on March 29 but surged to $16.89 on April 1, a whopping increase of $1.80 (nearly 12%) for the same meal," the Post reported.

"The Big Fish meal also jumped from $7.49 on the menu before April 1 to $11.49 after — an increase of $4 (53%)," the report continued. "Most other items increased anywhere from 25 cents to a dollar."

Hart House and In-N-Out Burger also saw price increases at certain locations.

However, the Post found that prices at Chick-fil-A, Wendy’s and McDonald’s did not rise, despite one McDonald's franchisee telling CNNBusiness that his restaurant has been affected by the minimum wage increase.

"As a business owner, when you’re dealing with this kind of extraordinary overnight change, you know, a 25% increase in wages,… (no) stone has to remain unturned," McDonald's franchise owner Scott Rodrick said. "And so we have looked at price, although I can’t charge $20 for a Happy Meal. My customers’ appetite to absorb menu board prices is not unlimited."

If it’s going to cost that much to eat at those places, they need to give you a basket of those Texas Roadhouse rolls to eat while your waiting for your order. With all the foreign invaders running around unmonitored in this former “country” (it’s a “refugee camp” now), they’re going to need a “drive-thru” just to make reservations to eat there.

It’s been going on for awhile now. Didn’t anybody notice? At least it will work in our favor in that many voters are stuck with paying so much more for routine items. Think fast food. In and out and cheap-at least it was.

Think of the poor young schmuck that can’t afford to take out the girlfriend he’s trying to impress. Then there’s the $20 calamari appetizer I used to pay $6-8 for.

I recently saw an old movie DIVORCE:AMERICAN STYLE(1967) in which Dick van Dyke goes into a McDonalds and places an order.
He receives..”A double meat cheeseburger, fries and a coke. That will be 57 cents please.”

Who is the moron who will work at Panera for $16/hour if everyone else has to pay $4/hour more?

You’re going to end up buying your Panera burger from a place staffed by ex-cons and registered sex offenders.

Not long ago, there was a labor shortage in the restaurant industry out here, and just about every eatery had a “help wanted” sign. You don’t see many of those today, and soon they will all vanish.

DIVORCE:AMERICAN STYLE(1967)is in my opinion one of the funniest movies ever made. Jason Robards is hilarious. I bought it on youtube and watch it a few times a year. Classic 1967. Southern California, subarbs, nice homes in the hills, dodger game, McDonalds, the funniest scene is where his boss tries to make Dick Van Dyke feel better about this apartment.

He says he really likes the kitchen (tiny) because you can reach everything, you don’t have to be running around all over the place. Joe Flynn plays his boss. Then the divorce lawyers....

Those movies were clever, real comedy, smart comedy. Sorry it’s off topic.

Well looky here......youtube has it FREE right now:

Minimum Wage:

Leftist gov't wage and price command and control: forced higher costs means forced higher prices and less business outlets - lower demand from less affordability and lower supply from less profitability.

That's how the gov't command and control empties the shelves on the Road to Serfdom (Hayek).

Rots a Ruck.

I feel dumbfounded anyone would feel the prices at McDonald's was going to ruin their lives. Or that this story is even news worthy. too many stupid people care?

Fast food wasnt that cheap in the 60's and 70's. I can remember in the 70's My minimum wage job I really couldnt afford KFC, Burger King, or McDonald's on a more than 1 or maybe 2x a week. maybe. Arby's was once a quarter.

I lived off a hostess fruit pie and a strawberry crush for my usual lunch or less.

friday nights was you got any gas money? it was $6 in the tank and $4 for a 12 pack of beer. thats it.

on even my best day on the job at minimum wage the thought of working at any minimum wage job to make a living NEVER entered my teenage mind. oh hell no!

Can’t be. Some Keynesian Economist was on X saying that higher wages aren’t inflationary and wouldn’t result in higher prices…

Close ‘em all down, rent or sell the properties. Will California care? Maybe. Will it bring mindfulness to the polls? Hmmm dunno... but it’s worth a roll of the dice.

Price increases are phased in incrementally. They will continue to increase.
